Filled with a combination of insecurities. fright and gladness fthey weren't in middle school anymore!! they entered enmasse as the Class of WQBA. Unfortunately fhey found themselves to be low men on the totem pole. Not only were they teased DY seniors. juniors. and sophomores 'our Friends the Class of 'B31, Mr. Filipkowski was forever sighing, 'Gremlins! what will I ever do with them7' Nhat more could they do but innocently ask, 'How do you spell your dame again?' The class quickly got organized electing R. Roy as their LEAGSF, M. Paradise as second-in-command and E. Lombardi and D. Cahill Itwo of the classes later casualties! as secretary and treasurer. J. Eaton became the first Student Council member. R. Maranda became 'the' manager. handling all the duties of the J.V. soccer, basketball and baseball teams. These teams consisted of several freshmen faces including D. Perry. M. Licopoli, K. Ryan, and M. Shaw on the J.V. soccer team and K. Jarvals Kanother later casualty! and Erin on the J.V. field hockey team. Meanwhile, R. Ustinovich ran cross-country as the lone freshman. ,A ,f!i'x.. ,Q i g .N Q. Q I I .. an Dave. Keith. and Kim. along with R. Roy, C. Conlon, and P. Robbins filled out the rosters of the J.V. basketball teams. K. Paquette, C. Hagglund, B. Richard, and A. Adams were chosen to represent the school as cheerleaders. R. Vasalofsky and K. Jarvais played baseball and softball respectively, while R. Hatfield was a helpful softball manager. Freshmen were also involved in other types of extra- curricular activities. A. Adams, T. Chesitis, K. Paquette, D. Cahill. K. Hodgman, T. Desrosiers, P. Roberge. L. Loach, C. Larsen. K. Fairbend, and C. Hagglund sang in the chorus. while Rich, Marty, and Carl played in the band. Several students also set out to organize their own kind of things. Barbara, along with K. Muzzy and C. Libbey, formed an Art Club and painted a Suzies mural to match the boy's in the gym. K. Donahue and E. Lombardi also became very involved with the play that was produced that year. Once again in the fall, the Class of 'Sb congregated at the school. They were a little less nervous and a bit more mature. They were sophomores and one step closer to graduation. As sophomores. they elected M. Paradise as President, B. Richard as Vice, R. Lindblad as Secretary, and K. Donahue as Treasurer. Mary and Pam were also on Student Council. 'S i. A u W? The class at this point was quite confident in itself although its members may have been some what apprehensive about becoming upperclassmen and being burdened with new worries about graduation, college and the SAT's. But nothing could be done to slow the passing GBYS and soon it was summer and school was out. As Juniors, the class was presented with and array of new and different 'junior things' like class rings. driving licenses. selling carnations, the prom. N.H.S. and thoughts of graduation. B. Richard was elected as President, P. RODD1hS - Vice, K. Speck - Treasurer, and K. Muzzy - Secretary. Barbie, Pam and K. Donahue were also elected Lo Student Council. At the arrival of spring, baseball and softball were cancelled and the spring Wcountdown' days passed slowly. The class concentrated on surviving until the seniors graduated. Finally, on May 27, they were finally safe and finally became seniors when the class of '83 switched their tassels. And now the class of l9Bh is the senior class at Sutton Memorial High School. They have experienced many moments-and have created many memories and they are anxiously awaiting graduation. W.ANt -y . v 'gf ' ,R , .,, gat Q x 95-fe .rv va, ' ll 'ze .R 'a. ... a, 4 ga A ' ff.. The Sammies had a terrific season despite having to share the DVC crown with arch-rival Bromfield. ta hz Ironicall thou h, the season was not what you Y 8 might call uvintagen Sutton soccer. With only one - 211121 ' y iyll returning starter from last season's team, people were having doubts as to whether the Sammies could do it again. Add the fact that the team was considerably younger and smaller, there was a bit of pessimism in everyone's head. But then you would have to be crazy of course! With the backing of a strong coach Mr. Ellis, the Sam ies had a victorious season that finished with a record of 11-2-2. Although the team was not overflowing with talent as in past years, it was one i if which had the will and drive to accomplish some- thing. The final outcome and what could be called the team's motto was hustle and very hard work. The Sammies soon became known for this and along with the constant, endless spirit of the team captains Brian Scholten and Hob Venincasa, these attributes stayed throughout the season. The biggest game in the regular season occured on October M when the Sammies tangled with the Bromfield Trojans at Sutton. It was a rough game filled with aggressive play and plenty of excitement. It was definitely super-sensational, especially to the Sutton fans as the Sammies came out on top with a convincing 2-1 victory. From there the team fought through the remainder of the season and were 11-1-2 going into the districts. The opening game Sutton faced St. Mary's at home. Unfortunately, this is when the glory ended. Though the Sam ies put forth their best team effort of the season in the worst of weather conditions, they lost 1-O in penalty shots. Yet heads were held high and rightly so. For, a team who supposedly had no chance of defending its' DVC title the Sammies acknowledged the fact that Sutton will always be the team to beat in soccer. pc. Although winless, the girls refused to ever give up or be defeated in their minds. The girls met long, trying practices head on with lots of hard work, smiles and spirit. Limited numbers fonly three returning playersl could not dampen the Suzie spirit .... the unofficial motto became, Hit's the quality not quanitylu Although faced with what seemed Hthe impossible,N playing seven Suzies against eleven arch-rival Douglas Tigers for an entire game .... the girls refused to relinquish their pride. But the boys managed to bounce back to beat the Whitinsville Christian School by two. lt was one of the most exciting games of the season, with Mike Cofsky putting up the winning shot with just seconds left in overtime. Although the Sammies ended the season low on wins Cwith a record of Q-133, they weren't low on spirit and determination. Led by captains Dave Perry and Carl Conlon the Sammies found their next win against Bromfield. A few games later they beat arch- rival Douglas Caway from homeb when Dave Perry drove coast-to- coast to put up a winning shot from the foul line. Dave and Carl were helped cut by seniors Arun Khosla, Rich Maranda, and Lee Simmons. Juniors Barry Bergoffen, James Loach and Jon-Gary Williams saw some playing time in addition to Mike and Dave Cofsky. , f f 0 wa Emi M lie ww I 'uefm and Court-R. Iifftflelfi, Y.
