s,..J Somehwere There's Someone Like Me Maybe Jimmy Carter? H Inspired by the National Election year, lVIr. Filipkovvski led his government classes in a study of the voting process and pro- cedure on a state and national level. With the knowledge gained in the classroom, the classes proceeded to apply it to the elec- tion of class offices in the school. Students were given four days in which to register. Only registered voters were acceptable on nomination papers and non- registered voters were not permitted to vote, as in government elections. After primary elections were held, the gym vvas converted into Precinct eil and students svvarmed in to officially elect the officers for their respective classes. Bal lots were then carefully counted and official results were announced to the stu- dent body. With a better understanding of the election process, most students learned hovv to qualify to vote and became more actively involved in the process. Elections became more important for the students while also being made aware of the privelege that it is to be able to vote and to voice one's opinion. 23
