Crowded lockers, cutting in, Our classroom capers, too. Surprise assemblies QRememb the grapevine always knew'?D Devotions and announcements, They start our every day. Hurried cramming for a test, And then we're on our way. A multitude of noises: Strains of music from the gym, Babbled French from 202, And broken glass from Chem. Thinking of the things we've lear At Sutton, these past years, We gather all our memories, And present them to you here. a f Q, J Q er how gf CCNTENTS FOREWORD . . .... . . DEDICATION . FACULTY . . Some of you may remember when it was called the SUD, but since cars today move so fast, the length of the course has been extended. And speaking of moving machines, down on the tracklcan see today's favorite going through a last minute pit -check -- it's Chris Fulton, that famous female speed demon in her powder blue racer, the Flying Saucer! Checking her out is her mechanic, VickyGodding and they're the only all-girl racing team in driving history. Did you notice the beautiful pin- stripework on that car? It was done by Normand Lavoie, an old friend of Chris's who specializes in that now. Uhoh, seems to be some trouble down there -- here comes the track ambulance -- apparently a woman has fainted. But it's not ser- ious, ladies and gentlemen, the nurses have revived her. Those nurses look fa- miliar, too -- why yes, it is! It's Bev Greene and Sharon Rocheleau. Talk about coincidences, we all graduated from Sutton High School together. Wonder if any more OI the old gang will be here today -- Well, I see some of them are! There are Al Blanchard and Dan Valatka, former stars of the Boston Celtics. I understand Al is married now and raising a family, but Dan is a confirmed bachelor, devoted to his dog, Lisbeth. They're sitting with Dicky Orphin, vice -president of the Coronation Card Company Cworked his way up from salesman!! and our ex-class president, Bob Flinton. Bob, as you all know, made headlines recently when he married into the Kennedy clan, thus becoming heir presumptive to the throne. And there's Donna Trottier owner of that fast moving trailer line. She has reportedly challenged Chris to a drag. Say, the entertainment world is well represented here today. Steve Case, director of the Coney Corner Clubs, is on hand with his entire entourage. The Coney Clubs teach elderly gentlemen the basic fundamentals of ping-pong, the two-step, and tiddly winksfive nights a week, and on the sixth night they sponsor a community sing. Sue Gypsy Purdy often leads the singing, and Donna Porte- lance is a featured attraction at the Ping -Pong table. Pat MacLaren is the dancing instructor at the New York Coney Club, while Sallie Nunnemacher, as Chief Coney in Charge of Entertainment, is responsible for the care and well-being of the other Coney girls, who are all grandmothers over the age of 65. And we have two special Academy Award winners with us as well! Miss janet Mickelson and Miss Linda Oelschlegel, whose fabulous hair styles are the rage of Hollywood. They are with another old friend, the directress of the Eastern States Exposi- tion, Miss Cheryl Mercure. Cheryl, who always was attracted to that Fair, has begun a campaign to close the high schools so the students may attend the expo- sition -- a noble ambition! A special box has been reserved here for the scientists and doctors in attend- ance. Entering that box now is Peter Picard, inventor of the science-teacher-com- puter machine reputed to be twice as efficient as any human scienceteacher. Right behind him is Evelyn Stewart. chairwoman of the Atoms for Peace Commis- sion. Marty Malinowski has just arrived -- he has taken a patent out on a bone- mending glue he developed. It mends broken bones overnight. Danny O'Shea is here too -- Danny is a leading figure in the battle against chicken pox in teenagers . 35 r-- -Q-fvsvn-v--r -ww-v--f - o r 1 I I V Another special box, decorated in red, white and blue bunting, is for govern- ment officials -- and even there we see old friends. Barbara King, treasurer of the United States, is responsible for the pastel-colored money being printed now. Marcia Pearson, who made her name in the Diplomatic Service, is director of the Peace Corps. Marty Putnam is with them, but it's Admiral Putnam ofthe Uni- ted States Navy now. I see three of the happiest members of our old class are here -- Doris Adams, Betty Richards, and Sharon Duclos. They may get up a little race oftheir own -- a motorized baby-buggy race! All three are married and raising lovely families, who attend our old Alma Mater. Charlotte Hemingway and Nancy I-lolst are also at Sutton now, not, of course, as students but as secretaries to the principal of the sprawling school. Ah, the race has gotten underway -- Chris pulls into the lead but there's an- other car coming up fast. lt's a black ear -- and the driver is masked! We may be in for a surprise here today, ladies and gentlemen! It'll be a while before we know the final results -- and more old classmates have arrived, just in time: Andrew Smith, the gourmet, owner of Chewy's Chow, and Richard Smith, his headwaiter. Gary Rivers, their chef, is also with them. Well it seems as though all the restaurant people have forgotten their friendly rivalries and are arriving together. There's Sandy McNeil, whose husband runs the Pleasant Valley Country Club, and THEIR chef, Dick Pierpont, who is famous for his beans: beans a'la mode, fried beans, broiled beans and beans Bearnaise. Fran Couture and Ruth Murray have taken time out from their chores to attend this race and cheer for their good friend. ln fact, Chris's ear is named after their chain of restaurants, all located just off the I-Ioly Cross campus. That's almost all of our class, I think -- but wait, here come five more of them -- Viola Schotanus, known to her followers as a second Susan B. Anthony, noted lecturer on reform movementsg and Ed Anderson, a fellow public speaker, is with her. Ed is known for his excellent use of Doc's poems in his speeches, Sharon Kneeland, authoress, whose latest work lO0l Ways to Surprise Your Friends is a best-sellerg Donald MacElreath, who illustrated Sharon's book and many othersg and Elaine Towle, head of the governor's commission on Resurrec- tion of Vandalized School Buildings -- And the race is just about winding up -- Chris is still in the lead, but that black car may be a threat -- it's closing in on her as they approach the finish line -- it's going to be close, ladies and gentlemen, they're over the line! It seemed to me that the Masked Driver won the race and he's about to unmask -- Ladies and Gentlemen, it's DOC! 36 . . . UNDER- CLASSMEN U L.. C1 ,.. S .2 I n z, 5 5 Q w C O an rf U 11 v-. f- 5 H E. STUDENT CCUNUL i During the scholastic year 1962-63, the Sutton High School Student Council held its meetings on the third Thursday and first Friday of each month. The Council, consisting oftwo representatives from each homeroom, was headed by Harry Davagian, a senior, other officers were: Christine Fulton, also a senior, V.P., Theodore Brown, Treas.. and Deatra Ford, sec., both juniors. One of their projects during the year was a Student Exchange with Douglas High School. Cn March 20, Wayne Salo and Gina Verostek from Douglas spent a school day at Sutton, and on April 8, Harry and Chris traveled to Douglas. Since the two schools share the same union, it was interesting to compare the differences in administrative policy, classroom discipline, and allthe details which comprise a school's individuali- ty. In an attempt to boost school spirit, the Student Council sold patriotic Sam Sutton pennants and Sutton buttons at basketball games, as well as Sam Sutton bookcovers during the school year. A remarkable improvement over past Student Councils, still its members hope to be able to accomplish much more in the future. ' .gf . Coach john Sullivan. Two seniors, Al Blanchard and Dan Valatka, were named co-captains for the year. The high points of the season were a seven-game winning streak in Dec. and two important Wins over Warren and Douglas. Sutton tied for fifth in the WWCL and went on to the Clark Tournament where they lost to defending champion Lunenburg in the first round. The leading senior and rebounder was Dan Valatka. Planiinion T5 EASTOVER -- Our Class Trip Hi yall -- this is Eastover as seen through the eyes of the Seniors on April 15-17, l9o.'3. As you can see from the pictures, we had a ball starting from the time we left the school at 8:30 on Monday morning -- with a burst of guitar music and off-key sing- ing -- until the time we returned on Wednesday afternoon -- with a burst of guitar mu- sic and off-key singing. ln between we spent three days of dancing, eating, bowling. swimming. horseback riding, and playing ping pong. tennis, cards, and making-telephone-calls-to-the- folks-at-home. We also tried our hands at skeetshooting. The boys were fairly suc- cessful, but the less said about the girls. l hc llcrnauc Room the better. The Trading Post The southern influence at Eastover was very strong and if we all came back with a drawl. there was a reason for it. The Heritage Room contained mementos ol' the Civil War -- the south will rise again! We danced in the car- riage room and drank all the soda we could hold plus all that we could carry.
