Class History The history of the Class of 1961 with its hours of happiness and hours of anxiety will forever linger in our minds. There will always be memories of September, 1957 which marked the beginning of a four year journey that was to take us into the realms of higher education and provide us with several new experiences. In October we Initiation which was were formally welcomed into high school at the Freshman sponsored by the Sophomore Class. Class elections our class advisor President, Marilyn Eaton, Treasurer, Representatives. were held in December under the leadership of Mr. Douville, The following officers were elected: Barbara Popham, Clemmey, Vice-President, Nora Benson, Secretaryg Lois and Merrilee Weaver and Nora Benson, Student Council The huge success of the Sophomore Return Party held in May, 1958, our only project for the year, proved to be a good start for our Washington fund. Time passed quickly and we soon found our first year had come to a close. The next fall we returned to Sutton High ready and eager to continue our journey. We were no longer the timid freshmen of the year past. We met with Mr. Douville and Mr. Murdock, our class advisors, to elect the following class officers, Barbara Popham, President, Bruce Hunton, Vice- President, Nora Benson, Seeretaryg Lois Eaton, Treasurerg and Pat Fisher and Steve Vokes, Student Council Representatives. With much delight our class presented the Freshman Initiation, for now we too were considered upperclassmen. Being more certain of itself the Class of 1961 prospered both socially and financially. Many members of the class took an active part in sports and extracurricular activities. We selected our class rings from the Josten Ring Co. in March and began the long wait for the coming fall when we would receive them. In a few short months the second step of our journey had come to an end. At the coming of fall we returned anxious to see what the junior year held in store for us.

As juniors we met with Mrs. Plante, our class advisor, and elected the following class officers: Donald Conley, President, Bruce Hunton, Vice-President, Nora Benson, Secretary, Susan VanderBaan, Treasurer, and Mary Ellen Bousquet and Raymond Godbout, Student Council Representatives. Mary Ellen was later elected secretary of the council. The members of the class turned into candy salesmen as we began our fund raising projects for the year. This was followed by a dance in October. During the fall many juniors worked hard to help make the play Finders Creepers a success. A grim shadow befell the entire school body with the passing of Mrs. M. Eleanore Lachapelle. She will always be remembered for her inspiration and help. A combination car wash and food sale held in April was very successful. On April 9, 1960, our gym was transformed into a beautiful Japanese garden as we presented the Junior Prom, Japanese Serenade. Lois Eaton was chosen queen and was accompanied by two very attractive attendants, Mary Ellen Bousquet and Pat Fisher. The remainder of the year included a dance and the annual Alumni Banquet which honored the seniors. At graduation exercises the new members of the National Honor Society were announced. They were Marsha Bentley,Mary Ellen Bousquet, Esther Darby, Dolores Kurtyka, and Phyllis Mosczynski. At this time Esther Darby was awarded the D.A.R. History Award and Dolores Kurtyka was the recipient of two awards -- the Most Outstanding Business Student and the Best Typist, given by the Underwood Typewriter Company. Thus ended the third step of our journey -- only one more remained. The long awaited senior year finally arrived. We met with our class advisor, Mr. Schwab, to elect the class officers. The following were elected: Robert Nunnemacher, President, Joseph Martin, Vice-President, Nora Benson, Secretary, Susan VanderBaan, Treasurer, and Esther Darby and James Renaud, Student Council Representatives. Later Robert Nunnemacher was elected President and Esther Darby, secretary, of the Council. The fall season proved to be a busy one for us as we held a car wash, the Annual Chicken Supper, sold Christmas cards, and held a Whist Party. Many seniors also took part in the play, No More Homework. In January, Lois Eaton was chosen by her classmates and the faculty to be the D.A.R. Representative. James Renaud was chosen as the class repre- sentative for Good Government Day.
