As we,the Class of 1961, stand on the threshold of adulthood, we feel that this is one of those moments. It is the time when we must make our first important decision, for neither our parents nor our teachers can tell us which road of life we should follow, Therefore, we have assembled the Exitus as areminder of our past years-- their joys, sorrows, successes and failures. We wish, in doing so, to say a word of thanks to the friends we've made along the way, and also to our parents and teachers , whose wisdom and understanding have led us where we are today, The Exitus is not only a reminder of the past, but a sign of hope for the future. As we read its pages, we see ambitions and the prophecy that they will come true, May all of us strive to attain our goals so that we may someday be the shining pride of our community and a credit to our Alma Mater, After we have left the halls of Sutton High, our thoughts will sometimes revert to the happy days we spent there, We shall realize that these are the years we cherish most, Many of us will never meet again, so before we leave on our journey through life may we unite in this prayer: May God guide and protect each of us on our chosen path, we. the Graduating Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-One, Editor -'!,',. Ambition -- To make money is 'S , A ' V Sv-.535 'X Class History The history of the Class of 1961 with its hours of happiness and hours of anxiety will forever linger in our minds. There will always be memories of September, 1957 which marked the beginning of a four year journey that was to take us into the realms of higher education and provide us with several new experiences. In October we Initiation which was were formally welcomed into high school at the Freshman sponsored by the Sophomore Class. Class elections our class advisor President, Marilyn Eaton, Treasurer, Representatives. were held in December under the leadership of Mr. Douville, The following officers were elected: Barbara Popham, Clemmey, Vice-President, Nora Benson, Secretaryg Lois and Merrilee Weaver and Nora Benson, Student Council The huge success of the Sophomore Return Party held in May, 1958, our only project for the year, proved to be a good start for our Washington fund. Time passed quickly and we soon found our first year had come to a close. The next fall we returned to Sutton High ready and eager to continue our journey. We were no longer the timid freshmen of the year past. We met with Mr. Douville and Mr. Murdock, our class advisors, to elect the following class officers, Barbara Popham, President, Bruce Hunton, Vice- President, Nora Benson, Seeretaryg Lois Eaton, Treasurerg and Pat Fisher and Steve Vokes, Student Council Representatives. With much delight our class presented the Freshman Initiation, for now we too were considered upperclassmen. Being more certain of itself the Class of 1961 prospered both socially and financially. Many members of the class took an active part in sports and extracurricular activities. We selected our class rings from the Josten Ring Co. in March and began the long wait for the coming fall when we would receive them. In a few short months the second step of our journey had come to an end. At the coming of fall we returned anxious to see what the junior year held in store for us. As juniors we met with Mrs. Plante, our class advisor, and elected the following class officers: Donald Conley, President, Bruce Hunton, Vice-President, Nora Benson, Secretary, Susan VanderBaan, Treasurer, and Mary Ellen Bousquet and Raymond Godbout, Student Council Representatives. Mary Ellen was later elected secretary of the council. The members of the class turned into candy salesmen as we began our fund raising projects for the year. This was followed by a dance in October. During the fall many juniors worked hard to help make the play Finders Creepers a success. A grim shadow befell the entire school body with the passing of Mrs. M. Eleanore Lachapelle. She will always be remembered for her inspiration and help. A combination car wash and food sale held in April was very successful. On April 9, 1960, our gym was transformed into a beautiful Japanese garden as we presented the Junior Prom, Japanese Serenade. Lois Eaton was chosen queen and was accompanied by two very attractive attendants, Mary Ellen Bousquet and Pat Fisher. The remainder of the year included a dance and the annual Alumni Banquet which honored the seniors. At graduation exercises the new members of the National Honor Society were announced. They were Marsha Bentley,Mary Ellen Bousquet, Esther Darby, Dolores Kurtyka, and Phyllis Mosczynski. At this time Esther Darby was awarded the D.A.R. History Award and Dolores Kurtyka was the recipient of two awards -- the Most Outstanding Business Student and the Best Typist, given by the Underwood Typewriter Company. Thus ended the third step of our journey -- only one more remained. The long awaited senior year finally arrived. We met with our class advisor, Mr. Schwab, to elect the class officers. The following were elected: Robert Nunnemacher, President, Joseph Martin, Vice-President, Nora Benson, Secretary, Susan VanderBaan, Treasurer, and Esther Darby and James Renaud, Student Council Representatives. Later Robert Nunnemacher was elected President and Esther Darby, secretary, of the Council. The fall season proved to be a busy one for us as we held a car wash, the Annual Chicken Supper, sold Christmas cards, and held a Whist Party. Many seniors also took part in the play, No More Homework. In January, Lois Eaton was chosen by her classmates and the faculty to be the D.A.R. Representative. James Renaud was chosen as the class repre- sentative for Good Government Day. The financial situation of the class made it necessary to cancel plans for the trip to Washington, Instead, we voted to go to Eastover, in Lenox, Massachusetts, Our chaperones were Mr, and Mrs. Douville and Mrs. Cohen, In June we shall reach the end of our four-year journey and bid adieu to our Alma Mater. Although this date signifies an end, it is also a beginning, Let us journey forth bravely and nobly, our hearts filled and thrilled with earnest and noble purpose, trusting that whatever our lots may be, we, each and all, may be identified with what is noble and good, Nora Benson Memories Our first day as Seniors - June 24, 1960 .,. Esther Darby i Class Prophecy The year is 1971, and the location is the beautiful Nunnemacher mansion on the shore of Lake Winnebago just outside of Pewaukee, Wisconsin. Knicky Nunnemacher, our former senior class president and now president of NOPACK, INC,, has kindly consented to let us use his home for this great event -- the reunion of the senior class of 1961, As I walk through the long, cool corridors, Ithink back to those wonderful days at Sutton High: all those lunch periods, the suppers, the class meetings, and finally--graduation! All these memories crowd into my mind, and I feel the sharp pain of nostalgia. But wait with the memories! In a few moments the familiar faces of classmates will be here, and we can reminisce together. Walking into the garden, I see that a few guests have already arrived. Carolyn Brown Marilyn Clemmey, and Marsha Bentley are in a deep discussion comparing their children, Carolyn, a college math teacher in southern Massachusetts, has two children. Marilyn, who flew in from California with her Navy husband and three children, announces that her husband has just opened a barber shop, But Marsha ends the discussionby stating that while she is living on a farm and tutoring junior high science on the side, she is well on the way to raising seven children. From the pool, a startled splashis heard, and Neil Normandin, Larry Towle, and Jim Renaud appear from beneath the water. Jim, a successful electrician, and Larry, owner of a well-established garage, maintain that they are happily married, But they can't convince Neil, who is Lieutenant Junior Grade Neil Normandin in the United States Coast Guard, and STILL a bachelor, At that moment, there is a thundering noise and we rush to the other side of the house just in time to see a plane land, Out steps Bruce Hunton, a TWA pilot, Dolores Kurtyka, and Lois Eaton. Dolly is a secretary with Jackson and Sons of Worcester, Lois is married to the chief surgeon at the Sutton Memorial Hospital and is raising five boys for Mr. Kolis' basketball team, Also greeting the newcomers are Andy Rivers and John Moorey. They are surrounded by all sorts of strange apparatus, and upon further investigation we find that John, who holds a successful job at United Structural Steel Co.. and Andy, now associated with the Surveyors of America, are laying out plans for an addition to NOPAC K, INC, I 1 w 1 I Back in the house, we find that the preparations for the banquet are well on the way to completion. Steve Vokes, owner of the famous chain of Vokes Candy Stores across the country, has the food well taken care of, Merrilee Weaver, merchandiser for a fashionable clothing store, flew up from South Carolina and her 350.000 home where she left her engineer husband in charge of their two sons. Merrilee and Cindi Graves are decoratingthe large hall for the reception, Cindi is married to a Navy captain, and they live in Alaska where she works in a hospital, In another corner of the room,we see Rona DeBoer, Joey Martin, and Donald Conley rehearsing for the evening's entertainment. Rona has taken over Lucille Ball's place on TV and is keeping Hollywood in running shape. Joey continued with his musical group and has put Lawrence Welk out of business, Donald joined Joey's group, and every week his voice is heard throughout the country on the Dick Clark Show, While we are listening to the music, a car pulls up to the front portico, Out steps Marilyn King, Mary Ellen Bousquet, Mary Mercure and Phyllis Mosczynski. Marilyn, a bookkeeper for a law firm in Kentucky, and Phyllis, a legal secretary in Boston, are discussing the cases of their respective companies. Mary Ellen, whois now teaching at Grant Elementary School in San Antonio, and Mary, a nurse at St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester, are trying to understand all the legal terms that fly back and forth between the girls . As they enter the house, they meet Nora Benson and Susan VanderBaan coming out of the library. Nora, a nurse at the USAF Hospital in Manila, and Sue, head of the medical department on the SS Eisenhower, have been looking up The Anatomy of Rodents in the Nunnemacher's fabulous library, As they are discussing the latest discovery in the field of biology, Ray Godbout, Francis Lavallee, Barbara Popham, and Dave Fitzgerald come infrom the tennis courts. Ray is president and Franny is vice-president of Godbout and Lavallee of Los Angeles, where they manufacture baseball bats. Barb. their private secretary, follows them around the house, busily taking notes as they come up with new ideas, Dave, a professional baseball player, poses for all their advertisements. Everyone is getting anxious for the Festivities to begin. Steve Frieswick, Chief of Police in Las Vegas, and Pat Fisher, secretary for a detective firm in New York City, Patrol the grounds waiting for Doc to arrive. Suddenly a shout goes up, Doc has been sighted cruising up the lake in Knicky's hydroplane with Knicky at the wheel, At his side is Doc talking with Sandra Bates, the company nurse for NOPACK, INC. As they land, everyone rushes to the shore to greet Doc, Esther Darby steps forward and presents Doc with the old blue cup in which he used to eat his dinners. Esther, who is married to the principal of the new Sutton High School, where she teaches, received the cup from the cafeteria staff, in Arm in arm, we walk back to the house where everything is ready. Anl as we pause a moment before sitting down to dinner, a silent prayer rises from my heart ,,,Thank Thee Lord for these friends, for this reunion of our class H the Class of 1961 Sus an VanderBaan F our Things Four things a man must learn to do, If he would make his record true-- To think without confusion clearly To act from honest motives purely, To love his fellow men sincerely, To trust in God and Heaven securely. These forwards were ably assisted by Sandra Bates, Carolyn Brown. Janet Mickelson qforwardslg and Nora Benson, Lois Eaton, Judith Vaundell, Ruth Murray, Christine Fulton, and Geraldine Chase Qguardsl. The Team's capable managers were Barbara King and Marcia Pearson. lg, N' Q I it... F1 Boys' Sports This year the Sutton Sammies suffered a season of defeat, However, the prospects for the season from 1961-'65 look more favorable. Much credit is due the individual players--they worked very hard and played the best hall they could, From the inception of the season, lack of experience plagued the team, Because of this, recognition should be given to Mr, Koliss, our couch, who attempted 'to overcome this handicap by patiently training the players and encouraging them after each time they were beaten by more experienced teams. The individual scoring went as follows: Blanchard--156, Valatka--119, Smith--TT, Hunton--55, King--40, Luvallee--21, Rivers--18, Baker--15, Normandin--10, Jarvis--10, Putnam--5. z1ndDeome--4, af-C779 Z' 'as I-o U :s lu -9. ll 5 U?
