It is an attempt to record for the future years, those events that have seemed important in our lives--the teachers who endeavored to fill our minds with valuable knowledge-- tools to fit us for life's great drama--classmates who have made our four years enjoyable by friendships formed through study and play. We would be amiss if we did not acknowledge the great debt we owe to our parents--God's gift to childhood--without their encouragement many of us would not have gone far enough in our schooling to be included in this Exitus. As we leave Sutton High may we each keep the light of true knowledge burning brightly to the end that we may be proud of our Alma Mater and by our conduct and sincerity in life prove to be her worthy sons and daughters. At the first meeting of our class, the following officers were elected: Gail Putnam, President, Thomas Fulton, Vice-President, Tallea Windle, Secretary, John Anderson, Treasurerg and Student Council Representatives, Gretel Putnam and Gordon Whitten. Many members of the class began their high school, careers with a bang, by participating in school sports, Glee Club, and other outside activities. We all enjoyed our initiation at the hands of the sophomores, and in April we sponsored our only project for the year--the Sophomore Return Party. We gained experience through this effort, and also began our Washington trip fund. Our Freshman year proved that we were to take an active part in school activ- ities, and responsibility, during our remaining three years at S.H.S. Our sophomore year began with the election of new officers. The following officers were chosen by their classmatesg John Anderson, Presidentg Anthony Grabauskas, Vice-President, Gail Putnam, Secretary, Tallea Windle, Treasurer, Judith King and Barbara O'Handley, Student Council Representatives. Our class advisors, Miss Pacella and Mr. Warner, helped us present the Freshman Initiation, and another dance held in April. During the year, Thomas Fulton replaced John on the Student Council. We also chose our class rings from the Josten Ring Co., and then waited impatiently for their arrival the next fall. As juniors we met with our class advisors, Mrs. Plante and Mr. Warner, and elected our class officers. They were: Thomas Fulton, President, Anthony Grabauskas, Vice-President, Gail Putnam, Secretary, Cecile LaVergne, Treasurer, and Judith King and Gordon Whitten, Student Council Representatives. Fund-raising went along quite well this year, through everyone's efforts at putting on dances, helping the seniors wait on tables at their chicken supper, selling candy at Christmas, and putting on the Alumni Banquet. In May, several members of the class who belonged to the Dramatics Club, enjoyed joining with others to present two one-act plays. At the graduation exercises of 1958, Thomas Fulton, Gail Putnam, and Gordon Whitten were elected to the National Honor Society. Our congratulations also go to Lester Neale, who at this time was awarded the United States History award. After summer vacation, and now finally seniors, we met with our class advisor, Mr. Schwab, to elect class officers. Charles Valatka was elected Presidentg Thomas Fulton, Vice-President, Gail Putnam, Secretary, Tallea Windle, Treasurer, and Judith King and Gordon Whitten, Student Council Representatives. Gordon was later elected president of the council, and Judy was elected secretary. Our senior year proved to be very busy for us. We put on several dances in the fall, sold Christmas cards, and sponsored the annual chicken supper, before which many members of the class turned out to be surprisingly aggressive and en- thusiastic chicken-killers. We must not forget to thank the many mothers and Doc who helped us so much to make the supper a success. Our play, Time Out For Ginger, directed by Mr. Warner, proved to be very successful and much fun for all who were making their first attempt at play-acting. All of these things gave us experi- ence and fun, plus adding a good deal to our treasury. In January, because of his speech written on Public Junior Colleges,Gordon Whitten was chosen as our Good Government Day representative to represent our school in Boston. In April, our dream of four years was finally realized when we started out on our Washington trip. Everyone had a wonderful time and was sorry to leave when it was time to go home. We want to thank Mrs. Plante, Miss Veccione, and Mr. Spence for being such nice chaperones on our trip. And at last graduation! Our sincere thanks go to all of our teachers and advisors, especially Mr. Schwab, for the help they gave us during our high school years, and we hope that we have added something worth while to the school in return for all it has done for us. Some of us smiling, some of us fighting to keep back the tears that welled up in our eyes. This had been a big moment for 31 Seniors of the Class of 1959. Time waits for no man. Seems to me Iread that some place. An event which had meant so much to that group of graduating seniors ten years ago was now just a part of history. But there are still the memories: Class Meetings, limch-hours, chemistry, Charlie Brown and that eccentric clique of senior boys. Slowly and faintly, the faces of my old friends flash across my mind's eye. Somehowlhave the feeling that they have all made their mark on God's world. As I sit in the gymnasium of the new high school, I wonder what can be keeping the others? Surely they wouldn't miss the class reunion! Maybe they didn't get the invitations? Perhaps they were sent to the wrong addresses? Well, its 3 o'clock. It doesn't look as though anybody's coming! Suddenly, the doors in the back of the room burst open. The gym shakes with hurrahs, backslapping, cheers and joyous conversations. I rush to meet my old classmates. Some look little changed in 10 years. Others seem to have aged consider- ably. There is the fine figure of Thomas Fulton, now married to a college sweet- heart and president of the Kaiser Electrical Engineering Plant in California. He is busy talking to a handsome young man whom I recognize to be none other than Charlie Lyman. Poor Charlie...he always wanted to teach math in high school. Now he's a thriving actor, currently making a movie in Hollywood called The Timid Souls. Next to him stands a rather tall, distinguished gentleman, wearing glasses. It is Gordon Whitten, now employed by the David Clark Compa.ny of Worcester. Gordon is working with the heating systems of space suits built by the company. That muscular fellow next to Gordon is Charlie Valatka, who holds the world weight lifting record in his division. I wonder what has caused the commotion amongst the girls?Oh, it looks as if Ruthie Jarvis has just entered the gym. She is married to a retired navy man and lives by the nook on Lake Singletary. Ruthie is accompanied by Tallea Windle. Tallea is a gym-instructor at a Long Island high school and is married to a Mass. State football star. Among the people streaming into the gym I recognize Judy King. Judy is married to an alumnus and works as a medical secretary at St. Vincent's Hospital. There's Marty O'Shea shocking everybody with a little electric buzzer. Marty is working for the government on an electrical system for a lunar rocket. He is conversing with'Norman LeBlanc, who is now an announcer at WORC in Worcester. The building trembles violently as an airplane buzzes the school. We all rush outside as the plane lands on the football field. Out steps none other than Billy Ohrn. Billy is now a commercial airline pilot for Northeast Airlines. More people come running out of the school to see what has caused all the commotion. Among them is Nancy Gravelin. This girl has all the luck. She met a millionaire only two days after she graduated and now lives with her husband in a beautiful mansion, overlooking Lake Singletary. It seems that hardly has one disturbance stopped, when, another one begins. Paul Towle has arrived on the scene driving his Mark III, reputed to be the fastest car of its kind in the world. Paul built it himself and won the Indianapolis Speedway Race with it. A black Cadillac enters the parking lot and stops beside Paul's hot rod. It's Gail Putnam. Gail is married and teaches kindergarten in of all places, Fairbanks, Alaska. Just as Gail is getting out of her car, we notice a car with military insignia. It has just rounded the corner of the school and is stopping directly in front of it. All the girls gasp as Captain Colin Putnam opens the door and steps out. Colin has seen action as a submariner and is now captain of the Submarine U.S.S. Dolphin. Laurel Seiberth, who lives about one-half mile from the new high school rides up on a horse. Laurel raises horses, and the books she has written about them have received world-wide acclaim. She is accompanied by several other girls, all riding her horses. There is Gale Adams. She is married to a graduate of the University of Massachusetts. The couple live on her father's farm. Beside her are Vivian Auger and Cecile LaVergne. Vivian is a lawyer's secretary in Framingham and Cecile works as an accountant at the People's Savings Bank in Worcester. They pose in their saddles, while Carol Hutnak, the famous commercial, artistl, sketches them. Another car enters the parking lot. It is driven by flashy Guy Horn, who works as a photographer at Loring Studios in Worcester. Now there are only a few faces that I haven't distinguished. One by one, I single them out. I accidently bumped into Gretel Putnam, who teaches foreign languages here at the high school. Gretel is unmarried, but still on the prowl. Over by the airplane is Richard Popham. Richard is a graduate of Wentworth Institute and, like Marty O'Shea, is employed by the government in military work. A line of cars is slowly approaching the school. There is one car especially for which we have been looking. The car driven by that world famous hoop-star, John Anderson. John is playing for the Boston Celtics. At present, he is known by his teammates as Mr.,Basketbal1. The car followingJohn's is driven by Virginia Redding who is a very competent secretary, working for a private investigator. As Virginia opens the door of her car, she is met by Jeannine Chauvin. Jeannine has come all the way from New York. She is chief accountant at the Manhattan People's Savings Bank. Another of the cars that drives into the schoolyard has two occupants. The driver is Mike Case, who operates, probably the most successful garage in Worcester. His companion is Paul Brote. Paul is married to his high school sweetheart and is now on leave from the navy. The last three cars to drive in and park belong to Barbara Morro, Marie Paquette, and Barbara Amour, respectively. Barbara Morro is married and works part time as a store clerk in Worcester's Grants. Marie and Barbara Amour both hold positions in the offices of the Alcoa Aluminum Company, Canada. Now the entire class of 1959 is assembled. The steaks are cooking on the barbeque grills, and their aroma floats across the field, telling us it's time to eat. Someone starts to pour the lemonade and several of us have spread blankets out on the grass. But we can't eat until Doc gets here, insists one of the girls. Then why don't you start eating? inquires a familiar voice from out of the airplane. Everyone stares amazed, as the door of the plane swings open. Someone yells Its Doc, - Too late - already that group of once-again Seniors had completely surrounded the man who had made their Senior year what it was. What can one say to rightly justify what is in one's heart?Iwas supposedly a grown man, a minister, but I had to wipe my eyes withahandkerchief before I said Grace... Thank you God for bringing us all together for this, our Class Reunion... Lester Neale 5 . N.. Under the efficient guidance and spirit of Coach Paul Zaido, the season ended with three victories and fifteen defeats. John Anderson, captain of the Sammies was the only veteran from last year's championship team. Inexperience plagued the team all year long. Although the Sutton cagers did not have a very successful year, the season was filled with many exciting and thrilling moments. The Sutton Sammies want expecially to thank Mr. Zaido for his fine coaching and hope that next year's basketball team will be more successful, Individual scores: Anderson 350, Beaton 180, Hunton, 77, Helgesen 36,0'Shea 29, Carlson 16, Gray 108, Leonard 24, Clark 6. John Anderson ' I Girls Sports The Girls' Varsity Basketball team had a good record this year. We thank our coach Miss Vecchione, for helping us end the season with an 8-3 record. The Junior Varsity showed spirit and skill that will bring another good team to Sutton next year.
