Foreword As we the class of 1958 approach our time of leaving Sutton High, we begin to think. We think of the past and what we have done both as a class and as an individual to benefit those around usp we think of the present and the worth of what we are doing now: but most important, we think of the future. Each one of us has to plan his own future. These plans must carry him successfully through the oncoming years. They must form the foundation for his future life. A foundation, in order to endure, must be strong and durable. Our plans should be the same. After our plans have been carefully made, we must carry them out. But it is not enough just to carry them out, we must carry them out well. The only way that we can do this is with the help of God. With His help, all of the problems which may confront us in the future become bearable. Only with His help can our futures be successful. This success which we wish to attain need not be financial success: it should instead be made up of happiness, kindness, under- standing, generosity, and humbleness. With these virtues anyone's life would necessarily be successful. May each one of us, with the proper guidance and advice, and with the help of God, make an earnest attempt to make his own life and the lives of those around him a success. Editor The 1958 graduating class is proud to dedicate its yearbook to Supt. of Schools H. Deane Hoyt and Principal Wilho Frigard, whose sincere interest for the students has been felt by many members of the student body. Their devotion and loyalty to their profession exemplifies our admiration for the entire faculty and administration at Sutton High School. fd-l.lZ'f'C-in an - IBM Cl? C: XX 17:f.ffoA,f.,64vv ,MMV MR. They were no different than the hundreds of other students who have matured through and prospered from participation in clas swork and extracurricular activities, but like every class before and after them, they believe theirs to be the best. Therefore, they have requested that the history of such an outstanding class be recorded and preserved as an example to future generations. ln the election of 1954, John Annis was voted by a popular majority to be pres- ident. The other officers were: Hugh Falvey, Vice-President, Alna Werme, Secretary, Arleen Morro, Treasurer, and Student Council representatives, Robert and Ruth Dukes. Socially, the class of 1958 prospered. The Sophomore Return Party triggered the host of fund-raising activities to finance that dream of every freshman class, the senior class trip. For the most part, the class took part in extracurricular activities with enthusiasm. The Sophomore year showed a great improvement in the class as a whole. In athletics , many of the Iunior Varsity squad graduated to Varsity, and the Glee Club began to show signs of promise. The elections of '55 were a mere formality, the same officers being chosen. Iohn Annis was re-elected, although he was later replaced by Vice-President, Wayne Vayo. The other officers elected were: Arleen Morro, Secretary: Alna Werme, Treasurer: and Robert and Ruth Dukes, Student Council representatives. The Freshman Initiation netted a tidy sum for the Wagon to Washington. The presentation was novel, a judge and jury imposing penalties on the guilty freshmen . The Sophomore Carnival and Dance, although held in previous years, showed imagina- tion through the addition of a horror house and ping-pong game. When the class of '58 reconvened in September, 1956, they proceeded to elect the following class officers: Wayne Vayo, President: Robert Dukes, Vice-President 5 Mary Lou Purdy, Secretary, Alna Werme, Treasurer, and Mary Ann Konopka and Kenneth Linder, Student Council representatives. Even with United States history the class continued to take an active part in all clubs and athletics. At graduation exercises the new members of the National Honor Society were announced. They were Ruth Dukes, Emmet Grandone, Arleen Morro, and Alna Werme. After keen competition in the field of history, Benjamin Landry was finally defeated by his arch rival, Arleen Morro, in the battle for the D. A. R. History award. Because of the disorganization of class activities, fund raising for the trip was not too successful and it became apparent at the beginning of the senior year in 1957, that if the class did not organize its activities, they would have to hitch their wagon to a star or take a trip to Hartford, Connecticut. After careful consideration the new senior class, with few dissenting votes, elected President Emmet Grandone, through his four years in high school an honor studentlwith an industrious and resolute character. Throughout the senior year he was to show his steadfastness and abilities of leadership. Other officers chosen by their classmates were: Harold Bentley, Vice-PresidentgArleen Morro, Secretarypl-Xlna Werme , Treasurer, and Mary Ann Konopka and Ianet Ledoux, Student Council representatives. Miss Konopka was later elected president of the Student Council and Miss Ledoux, Treasurer. The main concern of all seniors was raising the necessary funds for the trip to Washington. Shy seniors turned into aggressive salesmen as they convinced their parents, relatives, and anyone else they happened to meet of the necessity of Christmas cards and stationery, the excellence of the Senior Chicken Supper, the talent of the Dramatic Club, etc. The Asian flu and temporary recession in the country curtailed the success the seniors deserved for the work they put into those affairs. Several regular dances and a special Senior Carnival Dance netted approximately 5400. In January, Harold Bentley, on the strength of an essay written on the minimum voting age, was selected as Student Good Government representative. Alna Werme was chosen by her classmates and the faculty as D. A. R. representative of 1958. After a stirring and highly argumentative class meeting it was decided to hold the Valentine Ball, at which Francine Bilodeau was chosen queen. And finally graduation! ! ! And so ends the f1rst chapter in the history of thirty young people on the threshold of maturity who w1ll travel their separate roads to success or failure PRESIDENT Emmet Grandone SECRETARY Arleen Morro CLASS MOTTO Be Rather Than To Seem f Y' VICE-PRESIDENT Harold Bentley TREASURER Alna Werme CLASS FLOWERS Yellow Carnations Class Will We, the graduates of the class of 1958, Sutton High School, supposedly being of sound mind and body do hereby declare the following to be our last will and testament. Ianet Ledoux Marjorie Leonard Mary Lou Purdy Class Prophecy It seems just like yesterday we were walking down the aisle in our caps and gowns, yet here it is ten years later and we are all at our first class reunion, which is being held at Mr. Schwab's house. Everyone is having a wonderful time talking over old times, discussing their current jobs and what they have been doing in the past ten years. lt certainly is good to see every- one again. It seems that everyone in the class of 1958 has made his place in the world: Sutton High School has been enlarged a great deal in the past ten years. Emmet Grandone is now teaching history across the hall f.om Mr. Schwab. Emmet is not the only member of the class who entered the teaching profession. Arleen Morro teaches high school English and still does a good deal of drawing. . .After graduating from Sutton High, Ruth Dukes studied music at the Rochester Conservatory in New York. Ruthieis now teaching :nusic . Bob Dukes is now teaching in New Hampshire. . .We all know Alna Werme was very good in sports during her school years, so it does not come as much of a surprise when she tells us that she is a physical education teacher in Springfield. . .Speaking of Springfield, two other members of our class now live there, janet Goodwin and Mary Ann Konopka. Both are married and live next door to each other. Ianet still works as a hairdresser and Mendy, not only keeps busy with her family, but also works as an x-ray technician. Francine Bilodeau is a supervisor at St. Vincent's Hospital, while Marilyn and Carolyn Hare are supervisors at Memorial Hospital. A famous brain surgeon in New York has janet Ledoux for his private secretary. Elaine LaPlante went to a secretarial school after gradua- tion and now she is a medical secretary and married to a doctor. After working for a while in an office, Marjorie Leonard married. At this time, she and her husband live in Washington, D. C. Norman Bousquet is now an automobile mechanic and owns his own garage, but he is still interested in photography in his spare time. . .Like Norman, Richard Godbout also is an automobile mechanic with a garage of his own. . .Kenneth Linder has taken over his father's business after a four year term in the Navy. . . Peter Michelson now owns a large modern dairy farm and sells milk to all the large cities all over the state. There are two members of the class of 1958 who became famous singers . Ianice Hunton is a top recording artist and has a half dozen or so gold records for some of her more popular songs. Mary Lou, like Ianice, also is a famous singer and has her share of gold records. Jennie Briggs is now working for State Mutual and Ioan Moorey is a secretary for an insurance company in Boston--both girls are married. After Iune 1958, Linda Shaw went to an art school, and she is now a very famous artist. Many of her paintings have won prizes in art contests. Carol Baker is working for the government in Washington, D. C. Also working in Washington is Harold Bentley, who is a research chemist. Harold at the present time is working on plans for Outer-Space travel. Richard Landry is now a chief draftsman at Lockheed Airlines, and Francis Lavallee is a technician. . . . . Robert Swart is an electrician and is working for the General Electric Company. Goodness, what is that noise!!! It sounds like a police siren. In fact, it is! l! Wayne Vayo and George Lamothe, who are now State troopers , have just driven up with jerry Henault. They have just picked up Ierry at the airport where he works for Northeast Airlines . The party is well under way at this time. Everyone is having a wonderful time. We must not forget to extend our most grateful thanks to Mr. Schwab for being one of the best class supervisors we had in our high school years. Sutton West Boyleston The Sutton Sammies enjoyed a very successful season this year. The over-all record, before entering the Clark Tournament, was l2 - 5. The record in league play was ll - 3, which was good enough for a strong second place in the Western Worcester County League. The Sammies were denied first place by one point in overtime. This year the Sammies were invited to participate in Clark Tournament. The squad of l958 had the distinction of obtaining Sutton's first championship trophy from the Clark Tournament. The team was very pleased with the support given to them by their loyal fans . We would also like to congratulate Mr. Spence, who helped us greatly in his first year of coaching basketball. We also extend our thanks to Mr. Warner, who, along with coaching the Iunior Varsity team, has very ably assisted Mr. Spence.
