N Foreword With the advent of graduation, the focal point from which our future plans and ideals spring, comes the termination of six memorable years at Sutton High School. Ours is the first class to enjoy the benefits of both Junior and Senior High School in a modern, newly equipped school. May we, the Class of '56, having received guidance from our parents, faculty, and lifelong friends made throughout our school years, make a not- able impression upon this great world of ours. Arthur Godding Class History In September l952, forty-one hopeful Freshmen entered the Portals of Sutton Hi- gh . Although we seemed dwarfed by the upperclassmen, we tried in our years at Su- tton High to show our worth and importance. We assembled in room 207 with Mr. Sabolinski as our class advisor and elected the following class officers: Elizabeth Smith, president: Willard Iernberg, vice-pres- ident: Bernice Brown, secretary: Ellen Kallio, treasurer. We chose Frances Stark and Willard Iernberg as Student Council representatives. Navy blue and white were select- ed as our class colors. In October we were initiated by the congenial Sophomores. When Mr. Salinger joined the faculty in january, he became our class advisor. Members of the class participated heartily in basketball, cheering, and Glee Club. In March we sponsored the Sophomore Return Party under the capable and unique direction of Mr. Salinger. After an enjoyable summer we reassembled in room 207 with our class advisor, Mr. Salinger. The membership of the class was now thirty-four. We elected as class officers: Willard jernberg, president: Elizabeth Smith, vice-president: Frances Stark, secretary: Marcia Bullard, treasurer. As our Student Council' representatives we elect- ed Ellen Kallio and Herbert Chase. Our first enjoyment of the year was the initiation of the Freshmen. We continued to take an active part in school activities. Later that year we presented the original Carnival Dance under the direction of Mr. Salinger. This dance enhanced our class funds greatly. We returned in September and reconvened in room 207 under the supervision of a new class advisor, Mr. Murdock. We elected the following to be our class officers for our Iunior year: Willard jern- berg, president: Elizabeth Smith, -vice-president: Frances Stark, secretary: Marcia Bullard, treasurer: Patricia Hunt and Herbert Chase, Student Council representatives. The membership of the class had now dropped to twenty-Seven. To further enhance our class funds for our Senior year we presented a Comedy Bas- ketball Game in November and a Record Hop in December. Ellen Kallio was selected to attend Girls' State in Bridgewater in june. Also, Rob- ert Hare received the D,A.R. History Award at the graduation exercises of the class of '55. In September, l955, we proceeded on the last leg of our enriching and happy jour- ney through high school. , We found that we were to be housed in room 206 with our new class advisor, Mr. Schwab. Without further procrastination we proceeded to elect the following class off- icers: Willard Iernberg, president, Herbert Chase and later Roger Thibodeau, vice-pre- sidentp Patricia Hunt, secretary: Marcia Bullard, treasurer. Elizabeth Smith and Russ- ell St. Iean were elected Student Council representatives. Continuing to raise money, we sponsored the Senior Supper under the experienced direction of Mr. Schwab. The next major event of the year was our Senior Play, Cheaper by the Dozen , presented November 19th under the patient direction of Miss Austin. On February ll, 1956, we presented the annual Valentine Ball. Marcia Bullard was chosen queen. We are very proud to be the firstclass to terminate six years at Sutton Memorial School. We sincerely hope that we have made an impression on the logs of Sutton High, for we are sure that Sutton High has made a wonderful and everlasting impression on us. ' fr , Class Prophecy The invitation reads, You are cordially invited to attend a reunion of the Class of 1956 of Sutton High School, to be held june 14, 1970, at the home of Sutton's May- or, BILL IERNBERG. If you cannot be present, please let us know what you are current- ly engaged in, whether or not you are married, and so forth. See you there? You bet! The evening of the reunion brings with it an air of excitement and expect- ancy. Will we recognize our friends after all this time ? Will old friendships be re- newed or forsaken? The celebration is off to a good start with a wonderful banquet and Doc Schwab as master of ceremonies. As the night progresses, we visit with our classmates, re- living old experiences, telling of new ones. Doc is in his usual jovial mood, and, as usual, is offering famous quotations and bits of advice. We find that MARCIA BULLARD eloped with a peroxide manufacturer after a few yea- rs of college, and is currently developing a new line of products. Besides keeping Ioe happy, DENISE LAVERGNE is designing gowns for SHIRLEY FITZGERALD's dress shops, which are appearing all over New England. IOE RZEWUSKI has his own service station, and is a competent mechanic. We all remember the ex- perience he had with the Plymouth. ROGER THIBODEAU and ROBERT RICHARDS have become partners in a radio-tele- vision business, located at the new Sutton Shoppers' World. After leaving the Air Force, HERBIE CHASE tells us, he went to college on the G. I. Bill, to become a geometry teacher. Herbie always did have an interest in figures. Having seen DICK BENTLEY in Cheaper by the Dozen, a couple of talent scouts signed him up, and he can now be seen playing romantic lead roles under the name of Rusty Cable. LIZ SMITH's feet have carried her on to a Master's Degree in Education, and she is now Principal of the Sutton Elementary Schools, which three of her own children now attend. MILDRED GERBER is now supervisor of .nurses at the Sutton Memorial Hospital, IOYCE LINDSTROM, too, is a nurse, but Ioyce specializes -in private cases. She also assists her husband in his advertising business. PATTI HUNT couldn't leave her family in Florida, but sent word that she now has four boys and a girl. As much as Patti loved being an air hostess, she gave it up for her family. BARB EDWARDS says that she's still working for Trans .World Airlines, al- though no longer as a hostess. She, too, sacrificed her career for marriage. Look who just scrubbed in! Professor BOB HARE in his little blue Ford! Bob is on the faculty at W. P. I. , and his favorite extra-curricular activity is an objective study of the modern woman. IOEL MOORE is spending his vacation in Sutton, bringing back old memories. IGGY' is a forestry engineer in Wyoming. ART GODDING has decided to spend the rest of his life in the west as a metallurgical engineer, and only the reunion could bring him back to Sutton. Now that the dear old town has grown, TERRY BOISSE is holding down her position as City Clerk. WADE GORDON is a certified public accountant, and is very happy in his position and his new home. The new courthouse and city hall were designed and planned by a nationally-known architect, RUSS ST. IEAN. ELAINE BREHIO sends word that she is a commissioned officer in the Womens' Air Force. She felt more indebted to Uncle Sam than to the Class of '56, and preferred to remain at her post rather than attend the reunion. As for myself, Sheila, my marriage doesn't prevent me from working part-time. Since I'm getting too old for the stage, my spare time is occupied in directing the Youth Center, giving other kids the breaks that I had. ' Ellen Kallio Denise LaVergne 1 1 I . J .1 ,v A - .. The varsity, under the guidance of Coach Donald Sabolinski, were in high spirits, having compiled a decent record in the previous year. Even though three of the starting five returned from last year's squad, inexperience plagued the team all year long. At the end of the season the overall record was nine victories and eleven defeats. This year Sutton participated in the Townsend Invitational Tournament, winning the con- solation trophy. The Flattops were also selected to play in the Clark University To- UFITGYTIGTIL. Although the Sutton cagers had only a mediocre record, the season was filled with many exciting and thrilling moments. The boys would like to thank those who faithfully supported the team in its up and down season. Individual scoring: Chase-293, St. Iean-207, Faubert-178, Godbout-142, Vayo- ll7, Lamothe-83, Anderson-14. The Iumor Varsity, coached by Miss Austin, was not as fortunate. The Varsity forwards, Alna Werme, Connie Windle, Ethel Helgesen, Tallea Win dle, and Carol Moore, did a splendid job. The guards, Ianice Hunton, Elizabeth Sm ith, Marcia Putnam, Barbara Edwards, and Arleen Morro, also deserve a large share of the credit. Individual scoring is as follows: Alna Werme-182, Connie Windle-178, Ethel Hel gesen-107, Tallea Windle-89, and Ianice Hunton-49.
