Perhaps that is why our years here at Sutton Memorial School have been so pleasant, and have passed so quickly. We hope, in later years, when you take up this copy of Exitus, that you may see the harvest which the world has reaped from the seeds sown by the Class of '55. Our school has nourished the seeds, and our friends have furnished the sunshineg so, may the harvest be rich! With the wish that you, dear reader, may imbibe a little of the pleasure and good will, which we have received in these living exper- iences, and in chronicling them, we now set these pages before you. June Fessenden Viola Taber Class History In September, 1951, a group of fifty-one bewildered Freshmen ascended the stairs to the top floor of the high school. We were beguiled by the mature and learned upperclass- men. We learned that our class was to be housed in two different rooms--half in Room 207 with Mr. Place and the rest in Room 209 with Mr. Smith. We lost no time in getting re-acquainted and proceeded to elect the following class officers: Michael Roussel, presidentg Chester Szewerenka, vice-presidentg Irene Zona, secretaryg and Alyse Hoover, treasurer. Within a few weeks Irene moved from Sutton and we elected Sylvia Watson to take her place. We also chose Sidney Frieswick as A. A. treasurer. Blue and gold were selected as our class colors. During the first week of October we officially joined the high school when at the hands of the Sophomores we were initiated. Soon after the first marking period Mr. Place left to accept a position in Auburn. Mr. LeBlanc was selected to take his place. Members of the class participated in the glee club and basketball. In March, under the direction of Mr. Smith and Mr. LeBlanc, we sponsored the Sophomore Return Party. We ended our Freshman year with forty-four members and Mr. Smith and Mr. Yoffee, who had replaced Mr. LeBlanc, as our class advisors. We re-assembled for our Sophomore year in Room 2.05 with Mr. Schwab as class advisor. The class had dropped to a membership of forty-one. Our class officers this year were: Sidney Frieswick, presidentg Chester Szewerenka, vice-presidentg Laura Hutchinson, secretaryg Vesta Helgesen, treasurerg Bill Schotanus, A. A. treasurerg and student council representatives, Charmian Fisher and Chester Szewerenka, and later June Fessenden. Our first social event of the year was the Freshman Initiation. On the first of December Mrs. Maris replaced Miss Beechler. We exchanged home rooms with the Seniors and so Mrs. Maris was our advisor the rest of the school year. We continued to take an active part in the School activities. In September, thirty-four industrious Juniors under the guidance of Mr. Schwab re- turned to the portals of Sutton High. The officers for the year were: president, Sidney Frieswickg vice-president, June Fessendeng secretary, Vesta Helgeseng treasurer, Sylvia Watson. Student council representatives were Viola Taber and Michael Roussel, then Laura Hutchinson and Richard LeClair. We became engrossed in an effort to raise money for our Washington trip which in- cluded dances, selling Christmas wreaths, and a paper drive. In June, Charmian Fisher was selected by the Dudley-Gendron Post American Legion to attend Girls' State in Bridgewater. At the graduation exercises of the class of '54, June Fessenden was presented the D. A. R. History Award. We helped celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Sutton by operating a food booth. Also, some members of the class participated in the Anniversary parade. We returned in September, 1954, to assume the roles of sophisticated Seniors. Sidney Frieswick was elected presidentg Terry Windle, vice-presidentg Sylvia Watson, secretary, Laura Hutchinson, treasurerg and Alyse Hoover and Richard LeClair as student council representatives. We continued our efforts to raise money by sponsoring the Senior Supper. We soon became adept in culinary art. This event proved quite profitable. The next event of great importance was our Senior play, Our Hearts Were Young and Cray, under the able and Patient direction of Mrs. Maris. On February 5, 1955, we presented the Valentine's Ball, Alice MacLaren was chosen to be queen. Thus the class of '55 has laid the foundation for its future in four years at S. H. A. :vang November 13, 1955, after approximately seven weeks of rehearsal, the Senior class pre- sented the three-act comedy Our Hearts Were Young and Gay by Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimborough. We were rewarded for our efforts by an appreciative audience. We thank Mrs. Maris for devoting her time to the production of the play and for her excellent work as director. Just think--while lwas fulfilling my dreams as a dietician and homemaker, you, June Fessenden, the well-known pedia- trician, were in the midst of helping to organize one of the best children's hospitals in the United States1 This morsel of conversation was uttered by one of the members of the illustrious class of '55, ten years from now, at a grand reunion which takes place at Carole's sum- mer home. The program is mainly a barbecue and entertainment by a few members of the class who display many talents. Already quite a few members of the class have arrived. Don Faubert, an expert chef, is teaching Florence how to barbecue a steak. Florence is also enjoying her work as a medical secretary. Two private secretaries who are employed by the J. B. Mac- Cormick Co. , Barbara Fitzgerald and Marie Flansburg, are giving Don their undivided attention. Putting more coals on the fire are Jack Smith and Ted Bousquet who have already started a successful oil business together. Mr. Schwab is avidly discussing the advantages and disadvantages of atom heat in the home. Great scott, what's thatl Why it's Terry with his latest helicopter, and it looks like Dick and Barry hanging out of the window. Isn't Dick a mechanical engineer? He'll probably display some of his talents by inventing a combination car and helicopter. Grads, cried Rena, trailing after her two children with a napkin, I wonder if Terry will have much to say about his trip to Europe promoting better business relations? Near the tennis court four girls are catching up on the latest gossip. Viola, have you heard about my new secretarial job in Barry's newest sheet metal factory? asks Laura. I know you will enjoy it as much as I enjoy my secretarial job at Barry's first plant, is Viola's quick response. Debbie, shouted Laura, please get down from that tree. Oh, Viola, look at your little boy. He's telling Mr. Schwab a fantastic story about his jet airplane. My children are getting the best of mel exclaimed Jane. Gary cut his finger yesterday and I had to take him to see Sylvia for medication. By the way, where is Sylvia? inquires Shirley Leno. I want to ask her about the newest drug for soothing the nerves of two of my new patients. They are both very nervous and need a lot of help. Sylvia will be along soon. She had to assist in an emergency operation at the hospital this morning, Jane assures all concerned. 1 11 T Val, Doris, Carole, Terry, and Edith are concerning themselves with the food prepa- rations while making frantic grabs at their children, who insist on playing spacemen by jumping from trees and making horrible noises. Doris and Edith have news for Val, Carole, and Terry about the latest, most-fashionable hair style called Sophistication. Several of the men are reclining lazily under the largest and shadiest tree busily engaged in acquainting themselves with some of the girls' husbands. A few have even succumbed to the drowsiness caused by the hot sun and have fallen asleep. Ah, now we eatl yells Dick LeClair, heartily flinging himself at the largest steak imaginable. The food is delicious and everyone compliments Larry on the meat which he brought from his large, spacious butcher shop. All the dairy products have been most generously donated by Jimmy Whittier and the salad ingredients by Chet, both of whom seem to have had an excellent season on their modern, hygienic, new farms. Now that we have all partaken of this delicious food let's all gather around for the entertainment. This, of course, came from Sidney who is still a great leader. He is presently engaged as a teacher and also is still putting the finishing touches to his beauti- ful new modern home which even has an escalator running from the garage to the house. First on the program is Terry Maroni who starts out by singing a song but ends up answering a battery of questions about her T V Breakfast Club, complete with coffee and doughnuts and lots and lots of interesting gossip. Vesta's selections played on a new-type outdoor organ were most enjoyable. Vesta, now busy with her family, still finds time for substitute teaching at dear old Sutton High, which incidentally has a kindergarten department now. Charmian and Alyse surprised us all with a sneak preview of some of their forth- coming magazine covers and fashion illustrations. Alyse also had some very colorful posters on the romance which is to be found in Europe. Both girls are well-known com- mercial artists and we are all familiar with their excellent work in many of the current magazines. It is beginning to get dark now so Carole is conducting us into her lovely home. Once in the living room, the chatter breaks out anew and does not cease until Skit has his slides already on the screen. Skit, besides being a mathematics teacher does considerable traveling. Bill Lindstrom, contrary to the suggestion of a certain English teacher, did not be- come a mortician but instead spent four years in Oslo studying forestry engineering. We all feel that some of his talent has been wasted but the splendid conservation work he is doing more than compensates for this. After all the members of the class had each taken the stand feven the shy violets of English IVLI and told a little about their adventures since June, 1955, our very eloquent class advisor, Doc Schwab, delivered an oration which inspired us all and brought back many wonderful memories. Now it is all over and everyone is gathering to sing Auld Lang Syne and promising to meet again at our next reunion. A perfect ending to a perfect day and we, the class of 1955 of Sutton High, realize how proud we are of every member of our class and es- pecially of our advisor, Mr. Schwab. QM A - Boys' Sports The 1954-1955 basketball season proved to be a successful one for Sutton High. After weeks of preparation for a tough schedule, the boys, under the guidance of Coach Donald Sabolinski, compiled a record of fourteen wins and five losses through nineteen games, winning the first six in a row before going down to defeat. In league play Sutton had a record of seven wins and five losses. Sutton finished third, behind North Brookfield and Leicester. Rutland, Brookfield, and West Boylston have gone into regional schools, leaving three vacancies in the league. The vacancies were filled by the admit- tance of Cole Trade and Tantasqua Regional. Paced by co-captains, John Godbout and Herb Chase, the boys played steady basketball, showing a good all-around offense and defense. This year Sutton was selected to participate in the Clark University Tournament. Individual scoring: Annis-342, Chase-159, St. Jean-153, Szewerenka-86, Gendron-80, Cvodbout-36, Whittier-33, Smith-17. The Varsity lost three of thirteen games. The J. V. 's lost one game in three starts. Both teams express sincere appreciation to Mrs. Boutiette for her fine job of coaching. We also thank Alice MacLaren for her part in our winning season. Our forwards did an exceptional job of scoring this year. They are: Vesta Helgesen, Laura Hutchinson, Rena Zuidema, and Connie Windle. On the defense Sylvia Watson, Liz Smith, Marcia Putnam, and Helen Jarvais aided greatly by keeping the opposing teams from scoring. For the J. V. 's Ethel Helgesen, Alna Werme, Janice Hunton, Carol Moore, and Joyce Lindstrom were the forwards, with Tallea Windle, Jackie Turner, and Arlene Morrow as guards.
