With the win against Blue Hill last year, they were hoping to win at least two games this season. But, fumbles and injuries have plagued Sutton. Gary Jones broke his hand and Paul Ulmer dislocated a finger. Steve Mosley was taken from the Clay Center Reserves game with a broken shoulder. But Paul Ulmer wasn’t out for the season. With half the season unplayed perhaps the Mustangs will get it all together. “Sutton’s defense and offense are improving’’, said Coach Isernhagen. With a win against Sandy Creek, the team is on the go. In his third year after returning to the head coaching position, Mr. Isernhagen feels the team lacks size. The offense, however, is really accurate and the team speed is top-notch. Even though their defense needs improvement, they are working extra hard to get better. The two games that the team should have won were Stromsburg and Henderson. The Mustangs had them beat in the 4th quarter, 23-17. But Henderson came back to win by only 3 points. Top to Bottom: Coach Isernhagen and Coach Gowen cheer the team on. Down goes number 22. Miss Lewandowski is also the new biology, physics, and physical science teacher. This is her first year of teaching! Miss Lewandowski is a great coach who really knows what she’s talking about. The fillies record this year was 1 and 13. 6 RESER VE AND FRESHMEN Bottom Left: Freshman. Cheryl Bailey, is setting up an excellent bump. Center: “What style!!’’ Shawna Sinnen really knows how to serve that ball. Top Left: Looks like Lisa Peter has a Super-girl form while setting. The Reserve and Freshmen teams started and ended with an awesome season. The Reserve team’s record this year was 7 and 3. The Freshmen team also had a super record of 6 and 3. The girls and their coaches, Miss Lewandowski and Mrs. Gemar, are very pleased with these records but hope to have an even better record next year. She said, “The toughest game we played was against the Henderson Huskies.” The Sutton-Henderson game was tough, but Henderson won 16-14. “The team has improved. They have a lot more control and knowledge,” said Boals. The best part of the game for her is serving. To win a game, you have to get the serves over. Boals said, “The toughest thing to teach about volleyball is setting.” She also stated, “During practice we do the basics, not the fancy stuff.” Row four: Coach Boals, Diane Jamison. Megan Sinnen. JR. HIGH V.B. 8 I Mr. Moody said, “There isn’t any one outstanding player; we all play as a team.” The game coming up is against Sandy Creek. He said, “I think it will be a tough game but we’ll pull through.” During practice they work on the basic plays — not trick plays. Mr. Moody said, “The team is better than last year’s. They have more skill.” He also stated, “If the team does not win, they can handle losing. They handle losing better than I do.” Mr. Moody commented, “The team played a good game against Harvard. Not only did they win but they were really serious about winning.” Clockwise: Chris Hansen is making a long run for the Junior High Football team. The pass is incomplete for Chris Hansen. HIGH BOYS Coach Butler predicted that Geneva will be one of the toughest teams. When asked if we could win all or most of the games, he replied, “It doesn't have to be necessary to win all the games, but we hope to win most of them.” Coach Butler's goal this year is to win conference and go to the State Tournament. Mr. Butler decided he was not going to change the style of the defense and offense. When asked about the worst and best things about being a coach he said, “The best thing about being a coach is being able to work with young men and see them succeed. And, the worst thing about being a coach is putting up with the pressures when everybody expects you to do what THEY want you to do.” COUNTER CLOCKWISE-Reaching for the stars, Scott Scheierman pushes up for two. The team was fortunate to make it to State 3 out of 6 years. The coach felt the girls had a good chance of making State when the district assignments came out in July. The Fillies first game at State was against Burwell. which we won. The second playoff game was against Battle Creek, a disappointing loss. The Fillies ended their season third at State. Sutton Fillies this season broke Shick-ley’s 46-game winning streak. According to Mr. Schoneberg. the reason for these wins was working together as a team with excellent defense and each filling her part. The Fillies captured the 2nd-best record in Fillies History and were rated 3rd in State. Coach Schoneberg stated the toughest teams to play were Centennial and Battle Creek. The librarian, Mrs. Houston, said you must be a person who likes to work with people. She also said, “It helps to know a little about a whole lot of things.” To help someone is a good experience. Tutoring is giving a person special attention. This leads to students helping themselves. Younger kids enjoy the relationships with the high school tutors. Besides all the fun times with the kids, the person must be responsible for keeping his or her grades up. Tutors from left: Genny Martthei, Coletta Davis, Joy Hultine, Carla Shaw. Kelly Scoville. There were about 300 students here for the District 7 student council workshop. Channels 10-11,5 and 4 were here to cover the event along with the Hastings Tribune and the Clay County News. During the ceremony, Kerrey was presented with a plaque and a Sutton Mustang Sweatshirt. Following his speech to the Sutton assembly on leadership, Governor Bob Kerrey talked to reporters about a controversial school bill he recently signed affiliating smaller schools with larger ones. Left: Governor Kerrey talked to 19 student councils and Sutton 7-12 students. Left: Cory Fuehrer welcomes Kerrey to the Sutton leadership assembly.
