Seeing some success, despite a distressing season, the Sutton High School football team worked their way through the 1982 season with the final record of 0-9. Although the final record showed no wins, the team itself gained a few wins on their own. The team began practices realizing it was going to be a tough season because they had lost quite a few players from the year before. The team had only a few boys with past experience to lean on. There were two All-Conference Honorable-Mention players picked — junior, Brian Tessman for defense, who led the team with 119 tackles, and senior, Tom Sheridan for offense. Scott Scheierman, sophomore, was chosen for the All-Conference team as an offensive end. One of the most impressive happenings of the season was a 67-yard pass from quarterback Stan Rath to Tom Sheridan. Tom also had the longest running play of the season. The closest game of the season was against Dorchester, which ended with a final score of 7-13. And the most points scored in one game were 14 points scored against Harvard, the game ending 14-32. Coach Stones commented, “We played hard with very little experience. We only had four seniors on the team. We are also fighting a numbers game. We need to get every boy that is capable of participating out for football. We also need to overcome a 'no-need-to-work' attitude and decide to play to win every day in practice, not just on Friday nights. If we can overcome these few points I just stated, I believe that we can have a winning football team once again at Sutton High. The assistant football coach. Mr. Navrkal.
