We did a lot of “wild and crazy things. Monday was pajama and toga day. Then, on Tuesday, almost all of the students punked out by wearing mismatched clothing and weird makeup. Wednesday was western day. Thursday was the usual jersey-and-slave day, when some of the slaves had to wear the helmet and shoulder pads of a football player. Some even had to sing in front of the people in the lunchroom or feed their master. And Friday was hush-button day. The Pep Club members could not speak to the football guys, but the guys would stop at nothing to make them speak. The week ended by the Pep Club leading a pep rally to cheer on the team. This year the Pep Club gave awards for the best-dressed person during the week. Charlene Griess received a stuffed snake for pajama day, while Kent Ochsner received a rock for punk-rock day. Pattie Kastens received a cowboy hat for western day, and Tom Sheridan received a big button for hush-button day since he had collected the most hush buttons. The teachers who participated in Spirit Week shared two big chocolate chip cookies. Overall, Spirit Week was great fun for everyone. Sophomore attendants were Scott Scheierman and Tracy Hoagland. Junior attendants were Jeff Leininger and Michelle Fisher. Senior attendants were Tom Sheridan and Verna Huber, Bill Oates and Brenda Barnell, and Stan Rath and Brenda Schroetlin. Tom Sheridan and Brenda Schroetlin were crowned King and Queen. The second half began and BOOM! — lightning crackled, thunder rumbled, the downpour began, and people flew to shelter. After debating whether to continue the game when the rain subsided, the game was finally restarted. Despite the cold and wet, some loyal fans sat in their cars, hoping the homecoming spirit would warm them. Below: Royalty, from left to right, Tracy Hoagland. Although this night won't last forever, the memories will remain for years. The meal consisted of prime rib, baked potato, corn, tea rolls, salad, punch or tea, and strawberry shortcake for dessert. After speeches by junior class president, Doug Ochsner, and Jose Griess, senior class president, the banquet ended. GRADUATION After 13 years of education and discipline, the Senior Class is starting over again. On May 21, 35 class members ended their high school careers and stepped into a new phase of life. The colors were purple and lavender, and the girls dressed in lavender and the boys in purple gowns. The flowers were white roses. Tracy Grothe was valedictorian, and Brenda Schroetlin was salutatorian. Each presented speeches during the exercise along with Rev. Lloyd Gross, Mr. Moody, Mr. Delary Hofmann, and Mr. Moses. Altogether there were 20 Community Scholarships given to those planning to attend college. Tracy Grothe does a good job with her valedictory speech. Bottom: Mr. Woller teaches his chemistry class a few words of wisdom. OH, THE LIFE OF A STUDENT Parent- Teachers Conference is the time most high schoolers hate to see come. Some worry about their grades. Others think about the good times they had goofing off in class and the many times they came in late with no pass. They dread the stories teachers tell parents about how they acted in class and the many times they goofed off and interrupted class. Then come the grades. When asked about them, they end up saying, They are just fine, and change the subject as fast as they can. Then things seem to change between their idea of just fine and their parents' idea of just fine when they get their not-so-hot grades. In the end they promise to shape up and do better next time. But they slip up, and are back where they started, worrying about Parent-Teachers Conference and grades. 16 Mr. Butler said the most improvement this year was seen in the chorus, especially the men's section. Mr. Butler said, We have some solid basses and the tenors are learning to let it rip.'' The strengths this year were found in the blend and over-all sound. Mr. Butler said his accompanists deserved a lot of credit for the success of the vocal music area. The accompanists were Charis Spahn and Karla Nuss. Mr. Butler summed up the year well. After five years I think we have finally reached our goal of becoming a consistent choral program and all the credit goes to the students for the constant dedication and patience with a moody director! They can be very proud of what they have accomplished. 17 KRAZY KREATIVITY What kind of madness goes on at the far end of the hall???? Only a few students really know what goes on in the Art Department. Here you can learn to draw, paint, have clay fights and insult your friends. Anyone can take art. BUT, there is one stipulation — you have to be a little bit crazy! Everyone works hard. Most people don't realize how much really goes into artwork. Producing a work of art takes a great amount of patience, time, and workl The talent you have can only be brought out with a lot of effort on your part and then perfected with help from Mr. Liska. Come on down to the far end of fhe hall and join us KRAZY KREA-TORS in the ART DEPARTMENT! Top- Maridy Fielder puts the finishing touches on her art project. Middle-Someday Mr Liska will clean up his room. Bottom- Cindy Robbins is displaying just a few of her talents 18 HOMEWORK-HOMEWORK GIVE ME A BREAK! That's what all the students at Sutton High are YELLING! Just look around you. There are books everywhere. Day after day students are taking load upon load of books home to study and cram for tests and quizzes. As Connie Davis stated, We are all dying to go out to have some fun, but do you think we can???? NNNNOOOOO, because our parents make us do our homework, which takes hours. It seems as if all teachers think their class is the most important, and never take into consideration that their pupils have homework in other classes also. All I can say is to bear with it, follow in Tracy Grothe's footsteps and CRAM CRAM CRAM!!! Tracy, as we well know, is a glutton for punishment. Every night you see her carrying a stack of books. Algebra II, trigonometry or general math with Mr. Stuhmer or Mr. Bailey, you should be interested in this page. After all, you have to have 20 math credits to graduate and everyone wants to graduate. Did you know that the invention of the radio, which plays your favorite songs, and the development of spaceships and computers, which interest almost everyone in this day and age, require the use of mathematics? For example, you use math when you punch the buttons on your calculator or put 45c in the pop machine. If you paid $9 for this annual, how much is that per page? Use a little math. 20 CHECK THE LIBRARY SHELVES Books, books, books. Fiction, fact, and fantasy. All of these are found in our school library. However, it would be incorrect to describe a library as merely a collection of books. It also contains films, tapes, records, and a computer, all of which store enormous amounts of information. These kinds of records make the library an active part of our school community. Did you know that many people come to our school library to check the town's history in our annuals or to gather information for a report from the different sources that are found in the library? No, the library isn't a place to shelve books. It's also a place where anyone can get information. Counter clockwise from top left: Getting little done_____Darren Ander- sen. During the practices, the players showed a great deal of effort and enthusiasm. The team was senior dominated the year before, so there were few experienced players returning. With the loss of seven players, three setters and four spikers, the team had to create determination. But this year's team proved to have quite a few possibilities. Sheila Bauder led everyone on service reception with 84%. There were four people with 100% setting: Deb Boehler set 10 out of 10, Brenda Barnell set 1 out of 1, Stephanie Spearman set 1 out of 1 and Julie Oates set 2 out of 2. In the area of spiking, it was once again Sheila Bauder who led with 12 kill spikes. She was followed by Melissa Ochsner who totaled a number of 9 kills. Brenda Schroetlin led everyone with 88 attempts at spiking. The team had four major blockers: Sheila Bauder with 16 good blocks, Brenda Schroetlin and Melissa Ochsner each with 12 good blocks and Pattie Kastens with 9 good blocks. The most important area of the game is serving. Brenda Barnell had the lead with 100%, serving 4 out of 4 serves. She was followed by Sheila with a 93.5% serving record. Melissa was close behind with 92.9%. Becky Scoville led everyone with total points scored for the season. She scored 43 points and was followed by Pattie Kastens who scored 42. Two people from the Sutton team were selected for awards: seniors Pattie Kastens for 1st team All County and 2nd team All Conference, and junior Brenda Veleba with All County Honorable Mention. Photo from CCN. 26 Seeing some success, despite a distressing season, the Sutton High School football team worked their way through the 1982 season with the final record of 0-9. Although the final record showed no wins, the team itself gained a few wins on their own. The team began practices realizing it was going to be a tough season because they had lost quite a few players from the year before. The team had only a few boys with past experience to lean on. There were two All-Conference Honorable-Mention players picked — junior, Brian Tessman for defense, who led the team with 119 tackles, and senior, Tom Sheridan for offense. Scott Scheierman, sophomore, was chosen for the All-Conference team as an offensive end. One of the most impressive happenings of the season was a 67-yard pass from quarterback Stan Rath to Tom Sheridan. Tom also had the longest running play of the season. The closest game of the season was against Dorchester, which ended with a final score of 7-13. And the most points scored in one game were 14 points scored against Harvard, the game ending 14-32. Coach Stones commented, “We played hard with very little experience. We only had four seniors on the team. We are also fighting a numbers game. We need to get every boy that is capable of participating out for football. We also need to overcome a 'no-need-to-work' attitude and decide to play to win every day in practice, not just on Friday nights. If we can overcome these few points I just stated, I believe that we can have a winning football team once again at Sutton High. The assistant football coach. Mr. Navrkal. The boys weren't expected to do as well as they did this season. I think we surprised some people because of all the seniors we lost from the year before, said Scott Scheierman. The boys worked together as a team to improve themselves. Ty Yost said that, The juniors on the team were good leaders. With seniors Bill Oates and Stan Rath leading the Mustangs, they stomped on team after team on their way to Districts. The boys were all excited and ready to play Sandy Creek after the Hebron game, according to Scott Scheierman and Doug Ochsner. We were confident we could beat them, said Doug. The game turned out to be a disappointment, but the boys talked it over and had a good attitude about it. Doug said that he, Appreciated that the coach prepared us in practice so he didn't have to yell at us during the games. The boys are looking forward to next year, and they feel they will have a good season with the experience they have gained. ‘ Counter Clockwise from top left. The assistant coach, Mr. Navrkal. But those on the team and those who know and support the girls on the team know better. The spirit of the girls and their coaches was something worth cheering about. According to Melissa Ochsner, The attitude was great — the coaching was great. Steph Spearman also said, We had a good attitude. We never gave up. Only those who have been in athletics know what it feels like to get beat in games that you have worked so hard for and want to win so badly. Becky Scoville commented, It was a challenge. The girls stuck together and really worked as a team, with the help of their coach. Coach Schoneberg complimented us when we did good — and his yelling helped us to do better, said Steph. The Fillies are expectantly looking forward to next year. They are excited about the possibilities of the upcoming season. The last five photos are from CCN. 32 Take down! Reversal! Contrary to popular belief, these are not make-out maneuvers. These are actually wrestling terms. The wrestling team this year may be described as dedicated. It takes a lot of dedication to keep from eating all the greasy, yummy, sweet foods teenagers love. What makes it even harder is the fact that the biggest holidays of the year, with the best food, occur during wrestling season. But with lots of sweat and willpower, the boys made their weights. Two boys out of the team worked hard enough to make the trip to State — Tom Sheridan and Mark Bailey. Tom placed sixth at the State meet. Some wrestlers lost so much weight there was hardly enough of them on the mat to pin the other guy. Cory Fuehrer is one example. Everyone knows about Cory's attempt to get attention by hyperventilating. But seriously, the boys worked hard to keep their weights and pin their opponents. Counter clockwise from top left. Senior Tom Sheridan placed 1st in the 132-pound weight class at Friend, the Sutton Invitational, Conference and Districts, and he qualified for State where he placed 6th. Another senior, Mark Bailey, placed 2nd at Friend, 1st at Meridian, 1st at Dorchester, 2nd at the Sutton Invitational, 3rd at Conference, 1st at Clay Center, 2nd at Districts, and he was a state qualifier. Neil Cloet, another senior, was 4th at Conference, and he placed 4th at Clay Center. GO DOUG!! 34 The Boys' track team may not have racked up the most points, but a lot of hard work was put in by each member. The team was not really large enough to win any meets, but Individual-wise, we did one hundred percent, said Scott Scheierman. Districts seems to be the favorite meet among the boys. A 42'9 winning in the triple jump was credited to Todd Mau. He said, It was the best effort I ever put in — I didn't think I'd go that far. Scott also commented, 6' 3 at Districts was my best. I didn't think I had much of a chance at State, but then the winning jump was 6’ 3 . Brian Tessman also felt that, Districts was the best meet for me. The boys seemed to get most of their laughs from Brian Tessman's attempt at pole- vaulting. Brian laughingly admits, I hit the fence once and missed the pit another time. Doug Ochsner commented, I improved in all my events; it was a lot of fun. All of the boys on the track team worked at improving themselves and had a good time doing it. Rachelle Hansen said the team, “Would have done better if there were more girls out, but we had fun with those that were in it. Rachelle and Steph Spearman said, “The best practices were when Mr. Navrkal chewed us out! “The practices weren't fun, but the meets were. They had a slow start, but through hard work and dedication the show finally pulled together. At first, the worst problem was lack of time. Because of conflicts, students said they did not have time for the musical. Many of the students had a conflict with athletics, band, and church. But as the play progressed, the students learned to organize their time more effectively. Charis Spahn, who played one of the leading roles, said, It took a lot of time and hard work, but it was worth it in the end. Becky Scoville commented, “It's hard work to be in almost everything at the same time. I hardly ever saw home, except to sleep. The 1982 musical was performed well and was successful.
