Engle Barbara Fisher endow 'gfcbtofuy Our history as a class begins on the 4th day of September, 1950, when we enrolled in Sutton High School. Our Freshman Class of 127 members held its first class meeting September 15, for the purpose of electing class officers. Under the capable direction of our sponsors, Miss Engle, Mr. Adams, and Mr. Howard, we held our firsrelection, Jim Byrne was elected President, with Dwight Perrine, Vice-President, Wilma Rose, Secretaryg Mark Luzader, Treasurer, and Sue Moore, Historian, as his assistants, At a later class meeting Marjorie Robinson was elected to replace the former Vice-President and Nancy Berry was named Varsity Cheerleader, Alice Lou Gillespie, Janet Swiger, and Undine Underwood were chosen class cheerleaders and Marilyn Stutler was elected Treasurer. We chose green and white as our class colors and Eagles as our name, With the same sponsors, and a new title, Sophomores, we again met in September, 1951, and elected class officers. They were: Jim Byrne, President, Sue Moore, Vice-President, Wilma Rose, Secretaryg Mary Dyer, Treasurer, and George Dennison, Historian. Our cheerleaders were Alice Lou Gillespie, Mary Dyer, and Shirley Dean, and songleaders, Sue Moore and Nancy Berry. As the Junior Class we had more duties and responsibilities than ever before. We were moved into two home-rooms with Miss Engle and Mr. Howard as sponsors, and immediately started planning ways to make money for the Homecoming and the Junior-Senior Prom. Retaining Jim Byrne, Sue Moore, and Wilma Rose in their former positions, we also elected Jack Allman, Treasurer, and Sally Wilson, Historian. In a later election we chose the Dogwood as our class flower and our motto, United we stand, divided we fall. After many months of work selling candy, and the presentation of our play, FINDERS CREEPERS, we finallyhad enough money for our prom. It proved to be a success and was enjoyed by all. During the spring we ordered our class rings, and our sponsors were changed, Miss Fisher raking Mr. Howard's place. ln the fall of '53 we suddenly realized we were dignified seniors. ln our annual class election Jim Byrne was again elected President, Marjorie Robinson, Vice-President, Wilma Rose, Secretaryg Sue Moore, Treasurer, and Janice Arnold, Historian. We received our class rings during the fall and began planning our class play for spring presentation. As we near our graduation day we see, in the past, four years of happiness and attainment in Sutton High School, and, in the future, hopes for fulfillment of our dreams and ambitions as we become useful citizens of our country. 10 O VIRGINIA GREGORY, Ginnie FHA lg Choral Club 2,43 Library Club 3,4g Automobile Club 4g Blue Devil staff4g Homecoming Attend- ant 4g Junior Play QProgramsj 3. Also in its second year is the chorus, which participated in all band concerts and presented musical programs in the local churches and civic organizations. The chorus received much praise and com- mendation for its splendid work. For the first time this year the music department presented two director's awards and two national Arion Foundation awards for band and chorus work. Barbara Skidmore received one of the di- rector's awards for the fine job she did as drum majorette. The other director's award went to Gene Evans who served as concert master. Recipient of the Arion Foundation award for chorus was Mary Dyer who served as accompanist. The Arion award for band was presented to Jim Byrne, the student conductor. The new music department addition, shown on the preceding page, was completed and put in use at the beginning of the school year. Sutton was down in basketball this year as 8 lettermen were lost--seven through graduation and one by transferring. In the seven lost by graduation five were the regulars. The returning lettermen were John McLaughlin, guard, and David Garee, center. The coach is re-build- ing the team this year by giving experience to freshmen, sophomore, and junior boys. For the first time in many years Sutton has a B team and also a freshman team. The B team is small and lacks experience butwhen the season is over they will be prepared for the varsity next season. The fresh- man team has several good boys and with the experience they will get this year, the varsity will have good material for the next few years. Sutton lost 8 games while winning 12 last year. The record this year is 4 wins and 16 losses. Sutton started slow this year but at the end of the season with much experience they have improved greatly. One of their best games was played with Sand Fork which Sutton won in an overtime. Earlier this season Sand Fork beat Sutton 37 points. The games with Normantown and Cowen showed the improvement in Sutton although Sut- ton lost to both teams. When Normantown played at Sutton, we were badly defeated. Over at Normantown Sutton was defeated by 10 points, while Cowen beat us 12 points. In the Region IV, Section 16 Tournament, Belington pulled ahead after a l point halftime lead to beat Sutton. 53 Z VARSITY SQUAD--LEFT TO RIGHT: Lynn Nettles, Butch Crews, Alan Rose, Frank Harrison, Jim Williams David Garee, Randall Greene, John McLaughlin, Prentice Carte, Bill Whittington.
