Opening . Classes Sports . . EventslOrganizations . Junior High . Elementary Sutherland High Sutherland, Nebraska Minutes Become Years The minutes pass by unnoticed And the hours drag on forever. The days go on without end But the years disappear so quickly. We look back, and remember- How it used to be. Who we used to be. We think of the good times and the bad. Of the happy days and the sheer terror of reality. But we must not forget those who helped- Helped us get where we are today. Those people who would do anything, Just for a smile and a pat on the back. Those companions who would urge us on When we weren’t so sure ourselves. Who am I? WTiat will become of me? The answer is quite simple. Very little without the help of others. Those who love us and think about us, Wlio encourage and compliment us, Those who Jtand behind us and are always willing to help. Th se people we call..friends. -Doug Ward 2 Dress-Up Day and Midnight Fantasies to bribe the Shelly Funk shows the Sophomores version of Punk Rock. There have been many times we’re sure you thought we might not make it this far, but you never seemed to lose confidence in what we might achieve. The closeness of our class has made our high school years much more enjoyable. Our class meetings always went so smoothly, and we always got a great many things accomplished such as our Prom. You’ve always had us working toward that goal from the first day that you became our sponsor. It turned out that it was more than anyone could hope for. Graduation may be a time for farewell, but never goodbye. We will always carry you and everything we've learned with us throughout our lives. Although splitting the non-conference games with 5 apiece, SPVA Conference play saw only 2 wins against 4 losses. One bright spot is that the Sailors are losing only one senior while next years’ team will have four seniors, two juniors, and two sophomores plus they are expected to pick up some talented freshmen. Scott Jones was selected as an all-conference wide receiver despite breaking his foot in the 6th game of the year. Bob Broberg was an honorable mention selection as a linebacker. According to Coach Broberg, this was the first time in 22 years that the Sailors were not represented at state. Coach Soderholm reported that the Sailorettes turned in the best times of the year, but competition was particularly tough at the district meet. The Boys finished 12'A points behind the first place team while the girls were only 5 points behind the first place winners. Both teams show great potential for the coming years. There were only 3 seniors participating in track this season; Diane Grubb and Kris Headley for the girls and Tom Wilcox on the boys team. Many memories were shared by members of the Junior and Senior classes at this year's prom. It was held at the North Platte Elks Club on May 5th. Mistress of Ceremonies was Dawn Wisdom. The invocation was given by Megan Paulman. Kris Headley and Charles Mueller gave the Senior wills and Class prophecies were read by Scott Adkins and John Riddell. The Senior thank-you was given by Duane Scott. May 12, at graduation ceremonies held on the football field. Salutatorian Mary Goedert told her classmates, “We are on our way to becoming adults. It is now time to go on to the next phase of our lives. Duane Scott, valedictorian, reminded the purple and lavender clad seniors that, “Success comes one step at a time and we have just completed the first step. Guest speaker was Dr. Lyle Young, Professor of Engineering Mechanics at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. He told the class and guests that people are basically in two groups, the drifters and the doers. He said the drifters fail to take charge of their own affairs while the doers act to steer a course with much less uncertainty; they set goals. According to Dr. Young, “To be a doer, we need to recognize a need, define the problem, identify alternative solutions, and choose the best solution.” Diane Grubb read a letter of congratulations from Governor Robert Kerrey. Mac McCain sang Cool Change” and Do You Know Where You’re Going To? as he accompanied himself on the guitar. Following the ceremonies, many receptions were held at various homes to honor the new graduates. Salutatorian Mary Goedert receives her dip- loma from School Board President Don Fleecs. Goodbye Mr. Weishoar During Mr. Gary Weishaar’s time at Sutherland High School, he helped our choir grow better as each year went by. He’s been at Sutherland for 5 years as our choir director and we were proud to say, “He's our Choir Director.” But now you are going, and we will all miss you very dearly. To you Mr. Weishaar, we dedicate this poem. OUR GIFT TO YOU To reach up to the stars at night And swing across the sky- That’s just one thing we dream to do Before the day we die. If we could buy those stars we see And tie them in a bow, They would be our gift to you As you deserve them so. With face and eyes as kind as yours And the joy you bring to us. With little talks that help us out, Our friend you'll always be. At times it’s hard to say such words To a person in his sight, But the words we wish to say to you Are in the sky at night. May God Bless You Always and Good Luck. Love, your 1983-84 High School Choir Choir Does Well I at Contest The Sutherland High School has something to be proud of this year. Under the direction of Mr. Gary Weishaar, the choir received a II (excellent) rating at District Music Contest at Hastings College in Hastings, NE. Veterans George Smith, Scott Jones, Susan Seifer, and Monica Zulauf were joined by new member DeLynn Reitz. The problems assigned to be solved this year dealt with Electronic Games, Prisons, and Lasers. Changes in rules made the program more structural and competitive. The purpose of the program is to encourage creative thinking by brainstorming group solutions to theoretical problems. The Future Problem Solvers program is a state wide competition among all sizes of schools with the State Bowl held in Kearney. Winners of the State Bowl in each grade level compete in the National Bowl against winning teams from the 50 states. Tom Wilcox had three of his pictures selected for entry in two categories in the State Journalism contest. In addition to designing and putting the book together, the yearbook staff helped with all picture days, sold ads, took pictures, and gathered information. They also held a cake raffle, sold annuals, and had a picture sale to help defray costs of the book. From getting the pictures, to writing the copy, these hard working people have seen this book through to the end. According to the Junior high coaches this year truer words could not have been spoken. The volleyball team was not concerned about winning the game but in playing it right. Coach Sodcrholm feels that in Jr. High you should learn the basics and be ready to play the game when you enter high school. The football team was another story. Finishing with an impressive 4-1 record, the team under the direction of Coach Troxel seemed to have the word win on their minds. The Girls Basketball team did not have a winning record but Coach Rush felt they learned alot and is looking forward to next year. The “A” team had a 3-5 record and the B” team had an 0-6 record. The Junior High boys basketball team had a winning season this year. The 7th grade finished with a 4-2 record while the 8th graders had an impressive 5-3 record. Mindy Rasby has been winning in the long jump, 440 yard dash, and the 60 yard low hurdles. Tania Moore places well in the high jump and the 220 yard dash. Other consistent winners are: Judy Jones, high jump and 1320 yard run; Laurie Slinde, discus; Dena Troxel, discus; and Stacy Margritz, 880 yard run. Junior high boys are gaining valuable experience also with the young Sailors competing in the following areas: Larry Baker, discus and shot put; Shawn Hoatson, high jump and 880 yard run; Sean Land, high jump; Jeff Hoatson. high jump, pole vault, and 880 yard run; Matt Dancer, pole vault, 100 yard dash, and 200 yard dash. Also producing points are Chalk Hankins, pole vault; Bob Prokopf, triple jump, long jump, 880 yard run, and 1200 yard run. The laughter brought hope; the sadness brought tears, You seemed to experience them all durir the growing up years. Faded thoughts will always linger, and in them may you find; The treasures of friendships and love of a far more lasting kind.
