The 1982 Homecoming Week was once again a very eventful occasion. The car push started the Homecoming events off. Each class picked 5 girls and 5 boys to represent them. Everyone used all the muscles they had to try to overpower the other classes, but the Seniors pushed their way to victory. That night was the bonfire which was held on the Sutherland beach. The next day each class dressed up according to the theme they had chosen. At noon was the second annual wheelbarrow race. The Seniors managed to wheel themselves through the many obstacles and come out on top. In the afternoon more contests were held. The Juniors used their big mouths to overpower the other classes in the yell contest. “Smurfs” was the theme that led the Sophomores to victory in the song and theme division. To end the activities, on Thursday the Pep Club announced to the boys who their Guardian Angels were. Silent Afternoon started the Friday events. Student Council roamed the halls to catch people talking. These people had to pay for their loudness by doing strange acts that afternoon at the pep rally in downtown Sutherland. The pep rally started out with a parade which consisted of the band, each classes float, and a special entry by the Booster Club. Before the pep rally came to an end, Mr. Rost announced that the Freshmen had won the float competition. With the week’s competition points totaled, the outcome was the Seniors winning their third straight Homecoming title. Clockwise, beginning at top left: John Riddell shows us a smurfy smile as the Sophomores finish their chant and cheer. Diane Grubb and Tammy White yell proudly to help boost Sailor Spirit. Michele Rasby pins a diaper on John Meissner to pay for their talking abili- ties. John Meissner carefully wheels through the tricky obstacle course, while Kari Kennedy rides in the wheelbarrow holding the fragile egg under her chin. 18

Sailors Battle to Final Gun The 1982 Homecoming week festivities ended with a Friday night game against the Hyannis Longhorns. It was a hard fought game but the Sailors fell behind in the second half to lose 27-14. Halftime entertainment was provided by the flashy Drill Team performing to the song “Breaking Away”. The Coronation ceremony was held in the gym after the game. Ruling the honorary court was Mike King and Renee’ Sandberg. Jediah Creed provided the music to which the students danced. Pictures starting below going counterclockwise: Diane Grubb, Kari Kennedy and Johna Jochum show their excitement as the Sailors score another touch- down. John Meissner plows through the decorative hoop as they announce the starting lineup. Mike King and Renee’ Sandberg’s faces show their feelings of becoming crowned the 1982 Homecoming king and queen as they dance the royalty dance. 20
