Students Travel Overseas Traveling overseas to foreign lands seems like a dream to most people. But, here at Sutherland, a few of these students have made this dream a reality. Each of these students that were selected went through a process of filling out an application and interviews before they were selected. Top right photo, going clockwise: John Meissner is all decked out in his Japanese Yukata which is a summer Kimono. He is giving the first graders a slide presentation on his summer experience in Japan. Mary Goedert displays a pair of wooden shoes which are a dominant custom in Holland. She plans to spend her summer months there learning about the Netherlands. Robert Quimby and Heidi Elfeldt wave goodbye to their fellow classmates as they get ready to embark on an adventure to Trinidad this summer. Kari Kennedy gives her farewell wave as she heads “Down Under” to spend a year in Australia. 8

Students Earn Honors Top right photo, going clockwise: Duane Scott (right) was chosen as the top candidate to attend Boys State this year, with Steve Parr (left) being runner up. The conference will be held June 5-11 in Lincoln. Mary Goedert (right) was chosen to attend Lincoln as the Girls State candidate. Diane Grubb (left) is runner up for this position. Jodi Haugland joined the FFA members from across the country to provide music and entertainment for more than 23,000 people at the FFA National Convention which was held November 11-13 in Kansas City. John Meissner looks at a piece of music that was one of the selections chosen for the All-State music production that he was selected to attend at Elkhorn. 9
