Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1983 volume:

New Fads Hit Sutherland The 1982-83 school year arrived bringing many new fads and fashions to Sutherland High. It was common- place for a student to saunter into McDonalds with his ghetto-blaster, walk up to the counter, and order some Chicken McNuggets and a Diet Coke. Of course, the students had to be dressed for every occasion. 1. Monica Zulauf and Johna Jochum model the latest in mini-skirts. 2. Dawn Wisdom and Tori Miller know you’re never fully dressed without a bow tie when wearing the popular tuxedo look. 3. Even though the alligators have decreased in popularity, the preppy look is still in. Sweaters, ties, polo shirts, and topsiders make any ward- robe complete. 4. For a night out on the town or just to lounge around in the gym, Liz Fleecs, Ginger Nelson, and Holly Elfeldt find ruffled shirts to be just the thing for comfort and style. 5. Leg warmers helped to brighten up the winter blahs. Staci Rickett, Kris Headley, and Heidi Elfeldt show off their coordinating leg warmers. 6. As well as being func- tional, headbands made the girls’ basketball team, including Michele Rasby, Megan Paulman, and Monica Zulauf look more fierce. 7. Cowboy boots really made the scene this year in girls’ fashion. Worn with slacks or prairie skirts, Diane Grubb, Lisa Wilcox, Lana McConnell, and Michele Rasby found them comfortable and fun to wear. 2 3 In Memoriam We, the class of 1983, wish to include in this annual the memory of two class members who were taken from us too soon. Florence Marie Kellie and Richard Jobman. Florence was a member of our class from 1970 to 1975 and a good friend to us all. She was active in Girl Scouts and 4-H and always brightened up our world. Richard was in our class from 1980 to 1982. Although he didn’t participate in any extracurricular activities, he was a dedicat- ed fan and always supported his classmates and friends. He could always bring out the best of every situation. Florence Kellie Richard Jobman Dedication Without these two friends and teachers, Mr. Gary Weishaar and Mr. Bill Fulcher, we would have had a much more difficult time during our high school years. Besides just being great class sponsors, they were good friends and always willing to listen and offer advice. They even managed to keep our class meetings in some semblence of order. We can think of no better way to thank them for all their help than to dedicate this Log to them. 4 Melodrama Adds Excitement What do peanuts, a pianist, food, funny hats, a sawmill, and old songs have in common? They all helped to make the all school play. Only an Orphan Girl, a rip-roaring success. In order to offer the audience and actors a change of pace, a melodrama was chosen for the November production. Robert Quimby, the villian, tried in vain to steal the fortune to be inherited by an orphan girl, Renee’ Sandberg. Olio acts including a community sing led by Jodi Haugland and Heidi Elfeldt, a vocal selection by Monica Zulauf with a little help from Mike King, and a sketch, “Watt Street”, by John Meissner and Donnie Hafer, helped the play go smoothly. Top right photo, going clockwise: The villian’s wife Ethel (Michele Rasby), rudely comments to the orphan girl, Nellie (Renee' Sandberg). Nellis gasps as Rutherford (Robert Quimby) pro- poses marriage. Seated at piano, going clockwise: John Meissner, Don- nie Hafer, Heidi Elfeldt, JOdi Haug- land and Monica Zulauf. Boos and hisses fill the gym as Rutherford enters on stage. 6 i | 3 3. 4. 1. Where is Nellie!, demands Dick (George Smith), as Mrs. Perkins (Larea Paulman). tries to pull Dick off her husband Swem (Tom Wilcox). 2. Nellie listens to 0 story told by Mrs. Appleby (Nancy Scifer), as Lucy (Kris Headley), sits by her Mom and makes faces. 3. Moncia Zulauf enter tains the crowd with her solo as the devil (Mike King), silently tries to steal her away. 4. Starting at top, going clockwise: Lana McConnell, Larry Ward, Ellen Hop- ping, and Megan Paulman make up the helpful stage crew. 7 Students Travel Overseas Traveling overseas to foreign lands seems like a dream to most people. But, here at Sutherland, a few of these students have made this dream a reality. Each of these students that were selected went through a process of filling out an application and interviews before they were selected. Top right photo, going clockwise: John Meissner is all decked out in his Japanese Yukata which is a summer Kimono. He is giving the first graders a slide presentation on his summer experience in Japan. Mary Goedert displays a pair of wooden shoes which are a dominant custom in Holland. She plans to spend her summer months there learning about the Netherlands. Robert Quimby and Heidi Elfeldt wave goodbye to their fellow classmates as they get ready to embark on an adventure to Trinidad this summer. Kari Kennedy gives her farewell wave as she heads “Down Under” to spend a year in Australia. 8 Students Earn Honors Top right photo, going clockwise: Duane Scott (right) was chosen as the top candidate to attend Boys State this year, with Steve Parr (left) being runner up. The Case of the Frustrated Corpse, a comedy skit presented by sophomore servers George Smith, Tori Miller, Dawn Wisdom and Scott Jones, provided additional entertainment. Other servers at the banquet were Monica Zulauf, Megan Paulman, Aaron Martin and John Riddell. A variety of music for the dance wai provided by the Dynamics. The music ended at 1 a.m., but the fun continued with a breakfast at Seifer’s. Opposite page: (top photo) Toastmistress at Prom was Susan Seifer. Graduation ceremonies look place in the Sutherland gym with Michele Rasby serving as Mistress of Ceremonies. The event started off with the Invocation which was given by Reverend Gerald Timmons. He was also the guest speaker. Diplomas were handed out by Don Grubb and Robert Sandberg. Top right photo, going clockwise: Michele Rasby, Mistress of Ceremonies. Ronnie Kissler takes time out for some rest and relaxation. Coach Clark gives the boys a few good pointers before returning to the court. Donnie Hafer and Scott Jones show their off season football tackling techniques on Staci Rickett and Nancy Seifer. 17 The 1982 Homecoming Week was once again a very eventful occasion. The car push started the Homecoming events off. Each class picked 5 girls and 5 boys to represent them. Everyone used all the muscles they had to try to overpower the other classes, but the Seniors pushed their way to victory. That night was the bonfire which was held on the Sutherland beach. The next day each class dressed up according to the theme they had chosen. At noon was the second annual wheelbarrow race. The Seniors managed to wheel themselves through the many obstacles and come out on top. In the afternoon more contests were held. The Juniors used their big mouths to overpower the other classes in the yell contest. “Smurfs” was the theme that led the Sophomores to victory in the song and theme division. To end the activities, on Thursday the Pep Club announced to the boys who their Guardian Angels were. Silent Afternoon started the Friday events. Student Council roamed the halls to catch people talking. These people had to pay for their loudness by doing strange acts that afternoon at the pep rally in downtown Sutherland. The pep rally started out with a parade which consisted of the band, each classes float, and a special entry by the Booster Club. Before the pep rally came to an end, Mr. Rost announced that the Freshmen had won the float competition. With the week’s competition points totaled, the outcome was the Seniors winning their third straight Homecoming title. Clockwise, beginning at top left: John Riddell shows us a smurfy smile as the Sophomores finish their chant and cheer. Diane Grubb and Tammy White yell proudly to help boost Sailor Spirit. Michele Rasby pins a diaper on John Meissner to pay for their talking abili- ties. John Meissner carefully wheels through the tricky obstacle course, while Kari Kennedy rides in the wheelbarrow holding the fragile egg under her chin. 18 Seniors Dominate Homecoming Week Clockwise, beginning below: Several Seniors anxiously, await for the gun to signal the start of the car race. The Juniors show their yelling ability to try to impress the judges. Crystal Seerley reveals that she is Coach Clark’s guardian angel by giving him back his secretly kept broken golf club. The Freshman showed off their creative ability by decorating this magnificent float. 19 Sailors Battle to Final Gun The 1982 Homecoming week festivities ended with a Friday night game against the Hyannis Longhorns. It was a hard fought game but the Sailors fell behind in the second half to lose 27-14. Halftime entertainment was provided by the flashy Drill Team performing to the song “Breaking Away”. The Coronation ceremony was held in the gym after the game. Ruling the honorary court was Mike King and Renee’ Sandberg. Jediah Creed provided the music to which the students danced. Pictures starting below going counterclockwise: Diane Grubb, Kari Kennedy and Johna Jochum show their excitement as the Sailors score another touch- down. John Meissner plows through the decorative hoop as they announce the starting lineup. Mike King and Renee’ Sandberg’s faces show their feelings of becoming crowned the 1982 Homecoming king and queen as they dance the royalty dance. 20 Starting below going clockwise: Arthur Martinez makes an outstanding block which enables Aaron Martin to capture a few more yards for the Sailors. The 1982 Homecoming Court consists of 5 proud football players and 5 pep club members. Standing, from left to right: Sophomore attendants-Johna Jochum and Scott Jones; Senior attendants-Robert Quimby and Michele Rasby; Junior attendants-Joe Fleecs and Staci Rickett. Sitting in front are Freshman attendants- Cindy King and Mathew Martinez. Mike King and Renee’ Sandberg rule the Homecoming Court. The Drill Team shows off their high kicks in their dazzling halftime performance. The dance was enjoyed by students and alumni who showed off their moves by dancing to music provided by the band. 21 Activities Initiated by Student Council The Student Council is one active group that sponsors events which everyone can enjoy. Probably the biggest reason for the success of this group is due to the fact each class and organization selects one representative allowing ideas to come from the school as a whole. The Student Council was responsible for the band selection this year for the Homecoming dance. “Jediah Creed” had SHS jumping and the students enjoyed dancing to the rock ’n roll music. The cassette tape deck they purchased for the P.A. system played 4 new tapes bought by the Student Council. The tapes were by John Cougar, Men At Work, Willie Nelson, and Marty Robbins. Before school was let out for Christmas vacation, early presents were given to the students by this energetic group. Each person received a can of pop and a candy bar. To kill the Saturday night blues, the Student Council sponsored the movie “Drive-In”. To let the Junior High in on the fun, the movie was shown twice, once for only the Junior High and the other for only high school. Among other things, this organization kept the concession stand and the pop machine in operation for the year. These proceeds have been designated to sponsor another movie. 22 IT' Seniors Colors: Royal Blue and Pastel Yellow Flower: Mum Motto: i Build For Character, Not For Fame l.Rick Green 2. This group of players remained undefeated and ranked second in Class C until a 1 point loss came about in the semi-finals of the SPVA Conference Tourney against the Imperial Longhorns. Another loss to Grant in the consolation game of the same tournament seemed to make all the success go downhill. But, the girls picked themselves back up and won the rest of their games up to the District finals. Here they once again came up against the challenging team of Grant. Each team had beaten the other earlier in the season, and the showdown took place. Grant used their height advantage and the Sailorette’s repeated turnovers to win the game, thus putting an end to a Sutherland trip to Lincoln. A 16-3 record was the result for the team, nothing to be ashamed of. The J.V. team posted a 5-7 and show great desire to grow in this sport. The dream still has time to come true. Build Spirit and Strength 52 Golfers Swing to Successful Season Sutherland golfers really got into the swing of things and had a good season, winning three major meets and placing high in several others. The team had a good balance of experienced members and underclassmen. Six of the nine golfers, Donnie Hafer, Bruce Larson, Steve Parr, Donnie Douglas, Jon Moore, and Randy Chamberlain lettered during the spring season. Left, Donnie Hafer qualified for and placed 11th in the state meet at Franklin. Lower left, Bruce Larson and Scott Jones warm up before the Sutherland invitational. They were a very young squad with only 3 seniors. Therefore, the younger members on the squad had a lot of weight to pull. Everyone worked very hard and are looking forward to the years to come with great optimism and hope. John Meissner proved his worth by qualifying for the state track meet in 4 events. These events included the 300 intermediate hurdles, 110 high hurdles, triple jump, and long jump. He along with Danny Grubb were the only Senior letterwinners. The sophomore lettermen included Bob Broberg and Aaron Martin. Matt Burkland was the only freshman letterman. Along with other members of the squad, the girls managed to capture the runner up position at the SPVA conference meet at North Platte, and fourth place at the district meet in Bayard. At districts three girls earned a trip to the state meet which took place in Omaha. Kari Kennedy qualified in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.8. Renee’ Sandberg qualified in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.2, and in the 400 meter dash with a time of 63.7. Michele Rasby ran a 13.05.7 to win the 2 mile which took her to state. This team will be losing 5 seniors but still have a huge amount of quality girls to work with and are looking forward to the years to come with high hopes. One boy and three girls took the trip to Omaha to compete against the best around the state. John Meissner scored a total of 32 points to pace Sutherland to a State Class C Runner up spot. He placed first in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a Lime of 39.7 seconds, ran the 110 meter highs in 14.7 seconds and received second place. He leaped 21’ 2” in the long jump to earn a second place. Third place was the result of his 44’ 8” jump in the triple jump. Throughout the year John has broken four school records. He long jumped 21’ 7”, jumped 44’ 10” in the triple jump, ran the 300 intermediate hurdles in 39.4, and at the state meet ran 14.7 seconds in the 110 meter high hurdles. Michele Rasby ran the 2 mile at the state track meet with a time of 12.44.5. This broke her old school record which she had set earlier. Kari Kennedy ran the 100 meter dash at the state meet. She sprinted to a time of 13.02. Earlier in the year she ran a 12.7 in this race to set a new school record. She also set a record in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.0. Renee’ Sandberg received second place in the 100 meter low hurdles with a time of 15.2. This replaced her old school record that she set last year. She also qualified in the 400 meter dash and ran a 63.2. She erased the old school record in this event with a time of 62.2. They earned over $400 by having the second annual Powder Puff Football Game. The Red team, coached by Rruce Larson and John Riddell, won the match-up. The White team was coached by Mike King and Robert Quimby. They also sold concessions during the year to earn this money. With some of this money they treated themselves to pizza at the Pizza Hut. The Cheerleader, Drill Team, and Pep Club uniforms, which added color and unity to the group, were purchased separately by each member. The Drill Team not only performed at the half-time of the govs’ games, hut they also held a Drill Team clinic for the 3rd-8th grade girls. This ambitious crew also attempted to teach the high school boys a boogie routine which they performed at a girls’ pep rally. The new point system that was added to the Pep Club this year made the girls work much harder in adding to the school spirit. 58 Top left, clockwise: The freshman boys are all decked out in their cheer- leading uniforms as they practice their cheers for a girls’ pep rally. The school newspaper, The Nautical News, kept SHS up on the events which the students were in. This newspaper was published monthly under the supervi- sion of Mr. Mosher. Many of the articles in the paper also appeared in From School to School, a publication concerning schools of Lincoln County. The local newspaper, the Courier-Times, picked up some articles, too. John Meissner, a member of the class, earned a first place medal in feature writing and ranked second in editorial writing in the final round of the annual Nebraska High School Press Association Journalism Championships held in Lincoln. John was competing with all classes of schools in Nebraska in this contest. The high school annual was a big challenge for the 7 members of the Journalism II class this year. The addition of eight pages was made to enable all the different organizations and classes to fit in along with more room for copy and pictures. The staff was under a new supervisor, Mr. Tibbits, who taught yearbook at Chadron State College. The Senior class and the annual staff sold ads at the beginning of the fall year to help cut expenses. The photography work and developing was done by Tom Wilcox and the Courier Times, set the copy. The first was District Convention held in Broken Bow. Second was a program called SEARCH. SEARCH is where FHAers get recognition for their work. Two members who felt the trip to Cozad was worth while were Lana McConnell and Heidi Elfeldt, for they earned a gold medal and a chance to take their display to the state meeting. Eight members loaded their suitcases into the school van to take off to State Convention. Heidi Elfeldt brought home a $200 scholarship, and Lana McConnell and Heidi Elfeldt received a gold medal on their display. The chapter was kept busy during the year by running a cake walk, holding a Dinner Theater, a Valentine Day Dance, installing new officers, selling stocking stuffers, and hosting a teachers tea. 62 America Receive Honors Opp. page-(top photo) Heidi Elfeldt receives her scholarship. Music Department Has Productive Year The music department, under the direction of Gary Weishaar, had a very good and productive year. The large group of students put in a lot of hours and hard work practicing for the district music contest, which was held in Kearney. It did, however, pay off when they received a Superior rating. There were a number of small groups who also received Superior ratings at both the district and SPVA contests. The Swing Choir consisted of twenty hard working members. They choregraphed the actions they used in the two songs, and spent a lot of hours out of school practicing for their performances. This year’s football team came out 3-2 while the ‘‘A’’ and “B” teams also were successful with records of 7-1 and 5-1 respectively. The boys involved show great talent and promise for the coming years. Steve Binegar lead the rushing attack this year. Darrin Fosbinder and quarterback Dale Douglas also aided in leadership. In basketball, the “A” team averaged 39 points per game to their opponent’s 23. The team was lead by Darrin Fosbinder who averaged 10.1 points per game followed by Dale Douglas’s 9.4 point average and Larry Baker’s 7.0 average. Junior High Girls Start With Basics “It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.” These words of wisdom have been passed onto the Junior High girls’ teams through out the year. Vollyeball coach Art Soderholm feels that the experience of being out on the court and attempting the bump, set, spike will be more useful in the years ahead than just bumping the ball back and forth over the net. The volleyball team didn’t win any games, but that doesn’t mean the talent isn’t there. Basketball coach Mike Hush’s teams came out with better news. The “A” team had a record of 6-2 and the “B team posted a 2-4 record. To add to this success, the “A” team brought a second place trophy home from the Grant tournament. The basics have started, it’s time to mature. Win, lose, or draw, the Junior High girls enjoyed memorable seasons in these sports.
