SHS Students Set Trends in Fads ’n Fashions It wasn’t “Glamour” or “Seventeen” mag- azine that set the styles this year. It was the stu- dents from Sutherland High. Not only did they set the trends in fashions, but new words popped in, music blared out and their masterminds were chal- lenged by new video games and the Rubik’s cube. Win- ning the most popular word of the year award was “GEEK,” thanks to Larea Paulman. Let’s face it: when it comes to being in tune with the times, Sutherland’s there! Events 29 Grads Begin New Lives Graduation exercises marked the end of high school and the beginning of new lives for 29 SHS seniors. John Goedert served as master of ceremonies for the event, as well as being valedictorian. Brad Kissler and Alisa Cook were named co-salutatorians of the class. Reciting the invocation and benediction was the Rev. James McNiell, who was also the speaker for the occa- sion. At right: Bobbie Jo Cawyer and Dave Colburn march . along to “Pomp and Circumstance' as graduation begins. Below: The graduates receive a word of congra- tulations following the ceremony. Mike King and Tammy White were named Junior attendants during the crowning ceremonies. The theme for the evening, “Underwater Fantasy,” was carried out in blue and silver, surrounded by various oceanic decorations. John Meissner, master of ceremonies, opened with a welcome speech. Heidi Elfeldt delivered the prayer, and then a buffet- style dinner was served. Following the meal, John Goedert gave an acceptance speech and then the class prophecies were read by Connie Thompson and R.D. Quimby. Jon Main read the class wills. Concluding the program the sophomore servers, Staci Rickett, Susan Seifer, Randy Chamberlain and Tom Wilcox, amused the group with a small skit. The evening was spent dancing to the Crazy Louie Band. Many memories were taken home when the prom ended at 1 a.m. A breakfast at Tammy White’s concluded the enjoyable evening. Their class theme for Homecoming Week was “We Don’t Horse Around!”, with the official dress being western. From races, costumes, yelling, singing, and decorating the float, the Junior class came out the overall winners of Homecoming events. All 31 members got together and sacrificed them- selves to help pay for the 1981-1982 Prom. Each one worked for 5 hours for local buyers by doing various tasks. The first of these tasks was decorating the gym for Homecoming. This was definitely not easy for only 23 people, but they did a good job and the streamers even held up during the dance. The next feat was magazine sales as a money making project. Many subscriptions were sold and a total of $1,100 profit was made. This money was put into the treasury to help pay for next year’s Prom. This group proved many times that they could handle this adjustment without any problem. Their first major achievement was taking third place in the Homecoming events by beating the Soph- omores. The Freshmen also did well in money making projects. A soup supper, selling buttons, and conces- sions brought in over $400. All in all, this class came out on a good note and they hope for more years like this one the rest of high school. A season full of success boosted the Sailors into the state playoffs. Head coach Tony Seism reveals they didn’t at first know what kind of team they would have, and so the preseason practices were filled with lots of anticipation. Good de- fense tactics helped the Sailors the most throughout the year. They had a super season with a record of 6-4. The few that defeated Suther- land. including Henderson, the pre- sent state champions, were tough competitors. Sutherland lost ten se- niors, but have very good potential for 1982-83. Neither rain or shine can stop the cross country and girls or boys track teams. Fall was the cross country season. The seven members competed in five meets this year. Qualifying for the state meet were Ileldl Elfeldt and Ginger Wickware, where they placed 22nd and 40th respectively. The highlights of the boys track season were being SPVA runner-ups and champions at the Medicine Valley and Stapleton meets. John Meissner broke the school record in the triple- jump by going 44 feet lOVi inches and tied the 110 high hurdle record at 15.1. John also qualified for state in these two events. The girls track team had a good year despite many injuries and illnesses. Renee Sandberg set a school, SPVA and meet record in the 100 low hurdles. She ran a 15.7 at Imperial to capture one record while she ran a 15.5 at SPVA to set a new conference and school record. Renee qualified for State by winning the hurdles at districts. They helped serve the meal and were a big help. The tapping ceremony was set up in a courtroom fashion and one senior and seven juniors were elected into the society. The annual book fair was a big success an all the members split up during the week to help out. Sponsor Bill Fulcher has taken a big part in this club. Student Council The SHS Student Council with its thirteen members sponsored many fun- filled activities this year. The Homecoming week was a busy time, and the council members helped to put together the fun day contests and the Homecom- ing dance. As the year wore on, the movie “Omega Man,’’ was presented for the student body. This year’s officer? and next year’s elected officers attended a workshop at Ogallala. An occasional candy sale by the candyman himself, sponsor C.R. Rost, was held for the junior high and high school. The highlight of the year was buying the tape deck for the new P.A. system. Good Cheering Section Supports Sailors When you go to a boys football or basketball game, you not only get the thrill of watching an exciting game, but you also get entertained by the pep club. S.H.S. has one of the few orga- nized pep clubs around and this helps a tremendous amount with carrying on school spirit. The drill team always has a fast moving routine for the crowd at half- time. These great routines came from a lot of hard work, practice, and ded- ication from all the members. The cheerleaders did their part by holding pep rallies and leading the pep club at all the games. They held a powder-puff football game in November where the high school girls divided up into 2 teams and scrimmaged each other. The coaches for the red team were Bill Prokopf and Ken Kennedy. The coaches for the winning white team were Joe Beam, Mike King, and John Riddell. Another highlight of the year was having Moe Iba, head coach from the University of Nebraska come speak at the Athletic Banquet which was held April 29. They were trying to get out of debt all year, but with the participation of all the members it still managed to be fun filled. 1. Front Row: Staci Rickett, Angie Vasquez, Nancy Seifer, Monica Zulauf. FHA Has Busy Year Future Homemakers of America The FHA Chapter had a very busy year. Twenty-seven future homemak- ers attended the District Conference this year. Lana McConnell was the hos- tess of the dinner theater in November. They held a Christmas dance to bring a lot of spirit into the season. FHA week was filled with many activities. They hosted an Education Ap- preciation Breakfast, FHA bakeoff and raffle, and a Sweetheart dance. A salad supper brought members together for officer initiation. An Executive Council Retreat is in the planning process for next year. The group works well together and should have many homemaking years ahead of them. FFA Boasts Successful Year In the beginning Pat Fleecs and Ken Kennedy represented the chapter at the Washington D.C. conference. There they attended several leadership seminars and toured the city. Meanwhile at home, a points system was determining who could attend the National Convention in Kansas City, Mo. Those who went enjoyed listening to Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and Jim Nabors, as well as many other ac- tivities. District contests — perhaps most important throughout the year — qualified many for state in range judging, welding, extemperaneous speaking, and entomo- logy. This year’s first team to attend the national Arabian horse judging contest in Albequerque, N.M., brought home the 10th place team ribbon. The chapter also ob- tained a 104 7c chapter member rating this year. The successful Parent Member Banquet also brought news of this being the last year of the Ag program. The marching and pep bands played at almost all the home basketball and football games. The marching band was directed by Charlan Johnson, who was the majorette for the football games. The pep band was directed by Miss Doughty and they livened the half-times of the basketball games. The concert band performed many times throughout the year with the flnalle being districts and a pop concert. At districts, the band received a II which is an excellent rating. Jodi Haugland was the only person to bring home a superior rating, which she received on her trumpet solo. Those who got an excellent rating were Heidi Elfeldt, George Smith, the trumpet duet and the trumpet trio. The Stage Band was also heard at the concerts this year. Their evening practices were spent on working on many popular numbers. At districts, they also received a II. Hard Work Pays Off for Yearbook Staff Yearbook staff members shared many duties, from first working together on the editor’s ladder to the final results is a long road including hours of trial and error but many fun memories as well. The yearbook staffers attended several production activities, begin- ning with a seminar at the North Platte High School to gain many new ideas and knowledge, later taking a tour at the North Platte Telegraph. Throughout the year they have sold ads along with the Senior class and have gone over every page to ensure a quality yearbook. From photography to creative writing, from ad construction to general paste-ups the staff has seen it through to the end. The first contest they participated in was SPVA at Imperial. Here, the oral inter- pretation of drama team, consisting of Renee Sandberg, Jon Main and Mich- ele Kasby, received second place. The district contest was held at Kearney on March 16. Jodi Haugland re- ceived a I in oral interpretation of poetry. She was the only qualifier for the state meet from Sutherland. Robert Quimby and Monica Zulauf combined their talents in a duet acting routine and received a II at the district contest. Oral interpretation of prose was done by Megan Paulman. She did an excel- lent job and received a II. Also receiving a II was the oral interpretation of drama team. These three groups of people were only one point away from qualifying for the state meet. This speech team is still very young, so we will be looking for good results from this group of talented students in the future. Clubs Provide Activities for Rodeo and Gun Buffs The rodeo club and gun club had a prosperous year, and even though they are not closely knit with the school, we are proud of their endea- vors. Letter Winners are on the Move! The girls letter club added a little excitement to the girls’ locker room by painting the walls and doing a good clean-up job. Sponsor Art So- derholm says they hope to get a few sports characters, such as a volleyball girl, basket- ball girl and a trackster painted on the walls. The girls sold concessions for money-making projects. The boys letter club, sponsored by Daryl Broberg, sold Sutherland Sailor caps, and hosted a couple of concession stands. They plan to sell the rest of the caps next year for letter club. As in the past, the club members had their tickets paid for by the letter club. There was a great increase in members this year, in both the boys and girls group. Girls Letter Club (top photo) Front row: Mary Goedert, Connie Thompson, Larea Paul- man, Bobbie Jo Cawyer. Seventh Grade Looks Toward the Future Junior High Excells in Sports The Junior High athletic teams had a very challenging 1981-82 season. The football team ended its season with a winning 3-2 record. Along with football came volleyball. Both A and B teams had a 1 win, 4 loss record, but through the season they became more experienced and learned how to play together as a team. Both boys and girls varsity basketball teams came out with a winning season. The boys, 5-3, and the girls, 7-1, did a fine job in the Paxton tournament and got third place. The junior varsity boys and girls didn’t have as many games as the varsity teams did, but they put forth their best effort and gained a lot of experience. The junior varsity boys had a 3 win, 3 loss record, and the girls ended up with a 1 win, 3 loss, and 1 tie season. With the cheerleaders and pep club working together, they supported the boys through victory and defeat.
