Mrs. Babbitt made awards to students in the Busi- ness Department. Perry Eberly was recognized in bookkeeping, Sheryl Arensdorf and Linda Humphrey in office practice, Jay Colburn, Greg Babbitt, and Paula Cooke in typing. Tom Fleecs was recognized for his work as editor for the annual. National Mathematics Association Award went to Tim Stewart. Those having the highest scholastic average for the 1972-73 school year were: Jim Cooke and Diane Fleecs, Freshmen: Greg Fleecs and Karen Lena, Sophomores; Juniors, Bill Wamsley and Cora Adams; and Seniors, Tom Fleecs and Sheryl Arensdorf. Miss Stuhr presented an award for outstanding ser- vice in the library to John Ortiz, and others received library certificates. Outstanding speech students were announced by instructor Rosemary Urban. They were Sheryl Arens- dorf and Randy Rasby. John Ortiz was presented a Superior award for after dinner speaking at the SPVA contest. McCook Inter-high School Scholastic Contest awards were presented by Mike Troxel. Todd Chess- more received the Science Award from Mr. Troxel. Mr. Rodney Ridenour presented the American Le- gion Award to Todd Chessmore. Todd Chessmore and Sheryl Arensdorf were awarded many honors. Senior Scholastic Honors to the top students were presented to Sheryl Arensdorf, Randy Lavaley, Mar- tin Rotert, Debbie Petersen, and Bill Wever by Sup- erintendent Vernon Thomsen. There were eight Girls' Track letter winners. Sailor Award for girls' track was presented by Coach Crawford to Janie Crosby, and for volleyball by Coach Debbie Soderholm to Deb Petersen. The I Dare You Award was presented by Mr. Ful- cher to Sheryl Arensdorf and Todd Chessmore. The D. A. R. Award went to Sheryl Arensdorf. To be featured in the Who's Who in American High Schools and Carol Stewart, Todd Chessmore and Randy La- valey. Outstanding American High School Students were Debbie Petersen, Martin Rotert, and Linda Humphrey. 23

Honor Night — Junior-Senior High School Honor Night was held on Thursday Evening, May 10. Mr. Ferguson presented awards to Junior High stu- dents having the highest grade averages during the year. They were Michael Neilsen and Joan Hoefer, seventh grade; and Steven Sammons and Roxie Main, eighth grade. The Connie Holmstedt Spelling Award was pre- sented to Roxie Main by Mr. Grow. Monte Kramer was the recipient of the County American History Award. Vocal music awards were presented by Diane Mau- ler vocal music instructor. They were: Outstanding upper classmen, Tom Fleecs and Carol Stewart; Out- standing under classmen, Margie Lutz and Bill Wam- sley; Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award. Ter- esa Colburn and Susan White. Letter awards were al- so presented to music students. Instrumental music awards were presented by di- rector Richard Ingerle. The John Phillip Sousa Award was presented to Bruce Crosby. Awards for SPVA and District Contest were given to Teresa Colburn for a piano solo at SPVA; Jay Welsh, bass solo, District Contest; Tom Prevo, trombone solo. District Con- test. Stage band members also received awards. Underclassmen receiving letters were: First semes- ter, Sandra Fear, Diane Fleecs, Shirley Taylor, Nan- cy Jochum; second semester, Doug Fleecs, Scott Hep- perly and Mike Vath. Receiving their second letter were: Karen Humphrey, Sheryl Daly, Candy Hep- perly, Linda Humphrey, and Sherry Lavaley. Pep Club officers were recognized by sponsor Deb- bie Soderholm and new officers were announced. The outstanding senior award went to Sheryl Arens- dorf. Anchors were presented. Volleyball players recognized by Coach Debbie Soderholm were co-captains Debbie Petersen and Carol Stewart and All Association Team Members Debbie Petersen and Marcia Swedberg. Letters were given to 11 girls. Golf letters to Bruce Rotert, Jim Rotert, Pat Ha- gen, and Bill Wever by Mr. Hafer. Greg Arnold not pictured. Football letters were awarded by coaches Daryl Broberg and Rex Heckenlively. Named to Telegraph -Bulletin All-Area Team were Orvel Alden, tackle; Martin Rotert, back; and Todd Chessmore, end. Track letters were also presented. Basketball letters were presented by coaches Den- nis Crawford and Terry Hafer. Martin Rotert was on the All-Conference S.P.V.A. team. Letters were presented to the Cross-country team members. Art Awards were presented for the first time this year by instructor, Art Soderholm, to 11 people. Industrial arts teacher Daryl Broberg presented the Gold Hammer Award to Darrel German. Dennis Hoefer was awarded outstanding Industrial Arts Stu- dent. He also re- ceived a Superior and medal from the Vocational Technical Fair. 22

Randy Lavaley was named Valedictorian and Todd Chessmore was named Salutatorian at Commencement exercises May 20. They gave honor addresses. Thirty-five seniors received their diplomas. Tom Fleecs was master of ceremonies. The class song, You are A Child of the Uni- verse was sung by the Swing Choir. Baccalaureate sermon was given by Father Gerald Harr. William Fulcher presented scholarships - to Bruce Crosby a one-year Regents scholar- ship to the Univ. of Nebr.; the community scholarship of $400 to Randy Rasby; and the $100 American Legion Aux. Scholarship to Linda Humphrey. The class was presented by Principal Wayne Ferguson and Diplomas were presented to the class by Duane Rasby and Don Rotert, school board members.
