I Published by the Senior Class Foreword EDITOR ASSISTANT EDITOR CqmJ Mum Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than your- self. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing for- tunes of time. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Nurture, strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you con- ceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. - Author unknown 2 Dedication With love, gratitude, and appreciation we, the class of 73, wish to dedicate The Log to Mrs. Ruth Crockett who has devoted her time and energy to making Sutherland High School one of the best. We realize this is a very small way of saying thanks to someone who has gone beyond her office duties to further our educational opportunities. Her smile, friendly hello, and deep concern for others has made sunshiny days out of gloomy ones. We, the class of 73, hope this dedication will help repay in someway all that she has done for us. 3 Annual Organization ATHLETIC PAGES Lyle Hasenauer, Tom Fleecs, Linda Humphrey, Lar- ry Vasquez, Bill Wever, Mike Jochum. May the preparation received here, provide you with the necessary tools for your chosen pursuits. Your efforts as individuals and as a class are much appreciated by not only those of us associated with you as students, but by your parents and community as well. I wish all of you much success and happi- ness as you journey along life's highway. Sincerely, Vernon Thomsen If an athletic team wishes to have a win- ning season, they must work and train until they work as a unit. Each member of the team must be willing to sacrifice some per- sonal pleasure for the benefit of the team. The community in which you will live is very similar to an athletic team. If the com- munity is to grow and prosper, everyone in the community must be willing to sacrifice some personal pleasures for the benefit of the com- munity. As you leave school and join the commun- ity at large, each of you must decide whether you will join the community team or stand on the side lines. Sincerely, Wayne Ferguson Congratulations, Class of '73 We here at Sutherland Public School are proud to have been a part of your education. We hope you have been inspired to go on to new and more advanced areas of learning. We are confident that you will become good citizens of your community and nation. Sincerely, Charles D. District Solos Receiving SUPERIOR Ratings: LEFT TO RIGHT: Larry Vasquez, Medium Voice; Terry Clark, Medium Voice; Tom Fleecs, High Voice. The road chosen by the music department varied and tried to touch upon all aspects of the vocal music field. On October 12, students went to Wesleyan University to compete for the Brownsville Summer music scholarship. Results were - one male vocal- ist, - Tom Fleecs, qualifying for the scholarship. December brought the Christmas pageant - adorned only with the nativity scene and vocal accompani- ment. In January, Sutherland instituted a new vo- cal division group that proved to be outstanding, the swing choir. April involved our choir in two vocal music contests. April 12 in Grant, Nebraska, S.P. V. A. vocal music contest. Sutherland received three superior ratings. In between our contest sched- ule, Swing Choir was fortunate enough to work with Mr. Bill Lynn from Kearney in a swing choir clinic held in Wallace, Nebraska. District Music Contest was held April 28 in Cozad, Nebraska. The vocal music department entered ten categories and re- turned with ratings of five superiors and Five excel- le nts - Swing Choir received a 1 and the praise of the judge. The Music department was pleased to have a qualifier for the Young Nebraskans, a touring group from Doane College; Tom Fleecs will spend his sum- mer touring the east coast. Accompanists THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long 1 stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear: Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I could every come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Some where ages and ages hence; Two roads diverged in a wood and 1 - I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Elections were held, the very last moon rocket was launched, and the Viet-Nam war got new drastic changes in a positive direction. All the above items mentioned were particularly enjoyed by me because it gave me an exceedingly good opportunity to get better acquainted with the problems and achievements of the USA. But above all, 1 enjoyed discussions with various folks, thus giving me more knowledge of the USA, and my experiences hunting proved to be the most enjoyable. It seems to be universal that the hunter gets more frequently outwitted by the hunted than vice-ver- sa. The most enjoyable experience was to share activities and swap points of view within the Refior family. All these experiences put together will help me remember this adventure as memorable. Pertti Viljanen - Rauma, Finland It was a real good year and much more profitable than I expected it to be. I'm glad 1 took this chance and I'm sure that one year in a different country is worth more than ten years of school, however advanced the education system might be. A person can really experience a lot of ways how to do things - and also how not to do them. It is a mistake to consider the culture one has been brought up in to be absolute and unques- tionable; but if you go abroad it really helps. You just don't any longer think this way, and you might get a far more objective way of deciding and judging out of it. I'm really happy about this one year in the USA - it was FAR-OUT. Helmut Bender - Weinheim, W. Germany Jan Paulman was chosen to repre- sent Sutherland at Cornhusker Girls’ State in Lincoln by the Women's Auxiliary and high school teachers. She has been active in band, music, pep club, 4H, and the Junior class play. Todd Chessmore won Sutherland's 1973 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow award. He will receive a tie-tack and becomes eligible for state and national honors. John Ortiz was chosen to represent Sutherland at Cornhusker Boys' State in Lincoln by the Legion and high school teachers. He lias been active in football, basketball, track, and the Junior class play. PARK STANDARD SERVICE Sutherland, Nebr. If a child is to learn to read, reading must satisfy a purpose for him and he must be successful in his at- tempts to read. Because so many people today have difficulties in reading, the1 reading clinic was set up to emphasize certain skills which can help children and instill in them the desire for reading. With much flexibility a child begins where he is and moves along according to his ability and at his own rate. MRS. NEVA MOORE KOCH INSURANCE AGENCY 532-4122 214 N. Bailey Ave. North Platte, Nebr. 69101 Speech Therapist Speech is learned process of oral symbols used by humans to communicate. Just as some people have difficulty with math, others with reading, some people have difficulty learning to speak correctly. The speech therapist works with those people who have difficulty learning to speak correctly. It is well worth the sometimes lengthy and difficult effort involved, for the skill to speak properly is one of the most important, most used skills a person possesses. MR.
