Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1971 volume:

Foreword — Revolutions The wheels of time roll relentlessly on; therefore, we, the class of '71', have chosen wheels” as our theme. In order to cope with the ever-changing and complex society in which we now live, we must be prepared-or the wheels of progress will sweep our nation into obscurity. We hope that the influence of the Seniors has been an admirable one and inspired the students of Sutherland High to strive for perfection and avoid just spinning their wheels . The Seniors of 71' give a vote of special thanks to Mrs. Babbitt and the rest of the an- nual staff, and we hope you will find the wheels that will lead you to fulfill your ut- most ambitions. Editor Co-Editor .CLOC 2 Dedication— William Fulcher As our high school years come to an end, the graduating class of '71' would like to express their appreciation to Mr. Fulcher by dedicating the '71' Log to him. As our counselor, Mr. Fulcher has always been ready to extend help and advice during our most difficult moments. For his devotion and guidance to our class, we will always be grateful. Aside from this, he has been active in areas that did not require his attention. Above all, throughout our high school years he has been a friend and by dedi- cating the '71' Log to him we hope, in this small way, to repay him. | BUS CALL1HAN TRUCKING - Sutherland, Nebraska | 3 Annual Organization ANNUAL STAFF Jr. Editors, D. The path of success in anything is to want to meet the challenges, to see yourself winning and working persistently and thoughtfully to reach your goal. They arrived in the city of Denver and stopped for a bite to eat. They then proceeded on to Royal Gorge, which in itself was a long trip. They observed beautiful scenery and steep canyons. They rode on the world's steepest incline railway. At Colorado Springs, visits were made to the zoo, and the Air Force Academy. Then the Seniors checked into the Royal Host Motel. After refreshing up a little, the Seniors went to Celebrity Lanes where they could swim, play pool, ping pong, bowl, etc. On returning back to the motel, the Seniors prepared to get ready to dine at Laffete's where making the customer happy was their only aim. The next two days the Seniors went on a picnic, visited the Redrocks, went to the Cinerama where Love Story, was playing, shopped at Cinderella City, and before returning home made a last stop at Stapleton Airport. Accompanying the Seniors were sponsors, Mr. Bill Fulcher, Mr. and Mrs. Terry Hafer, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fleecs, and bus driver Bruce Johnson. They attended school one-half day in Paxton and returned to their classes in Suther- land for the other half day. In September, 1970, the Sutherland Schools were able to set up their own special education class- room. The children attended this class all day, however, they attend vocal music, band, home ec. , shop, and physical education with children of their own age. Miss Ruby Schuler Beginning in 1944, Miss Ruby Schuler has been a teacher in the second and third grade of the Sutherland Schools for 23 years. Miss Schuler is retiring from the teaching profession after 42 years. Thursday, May 20, was proclaimed as Miss Schuler Day, and many former students and friends of the Sutherland Community at- tended a tea given in her honor in the home economics room. She also received many letters from former students and friends. Attend- ing the tea were three members of her first class as a teacher in Sutherland in 1944-45. They were Mrs. Herb Meissner (Sandra Shoup), Miss Jane Cochran of Cheyenne, Wyo. , and Jim Haugland. All students presently in school that were taught by Miss Schuler in the second and third grades from 1964 through 1971 autographed a scroll which was presented to her. Miss Schuler will be missed and will be remembered as an excel- lent teacher who spent many extra hours after school helping students. Miss Schuler has moved to her home at Laurel, Nebraska. 34 PATRONIZE OUR BOOSTERS The staff and advisors of the 71” annual wish to express its appreciation to the business people of Sutherland, Hershey, Paxton, and North Platte, without whose support, the annual would not have been possible.
