01? EWOR £fe ? rp 44 We have tried to reproduce with snapshots and activities, the spirit of a memorable year at Sutherland High School °o May this 1964 Log serve as a reminder of your happy high school days and always signify honest effort, school spirit, and love for our school. We are grateful to the annual staff, to the administration, fac- ulty, and student body for their co-operation and encouragement. ccj cq The John Colburn most people will remember - the pleasant smile, twinkles in his eyes, and the warm friendliness he shared with everyone. We, the Seniors of 1964, dedicate this annual to John Colburn, a 1962 graduate of S.H.S. A young man of high ideals and character, whose memories will be with us forever. The community was shocked in August 1963 after it had learned that John Colburn, a likeable, personable young man, had died of injuries suf- fered in an accident near Sutherland. John was happiest when he was par- ticipating in athletics. He holds the school basketball scoring record for one season and the low hurdle record of Sutherland High School. MUSIC OFFICERS President ------ Dennis Hilton Vice-President - - - - pat Thomas Secretary ----- Carol Thomsen Student Council Representative - - Nancy Borron (not shown) Sutherland High School music groups and soloists had a very successful and busy year. In October the large and small groups presented a Fall concert, in which we saw such characters as the Boys' Quartet singing Pull Your Shades Down Mary Ann,” and the Mixed Chorus doing Echo Song, Skip to My Lou, and several others. Before the Christmas holidays the Mixed Chorus, a select group of fifty voices, presented a Christ- mas concert along with the Boys' Quartet on KNOP TV, and all music groups presented the annual Christmas program. In the SPVA contest at Chappell, the Boys' Octet placed first among the boys' groups there, and the Boys' Quartet placed third. The Girls' Triple Trio received a ribbon for placing second among the girls' small groups. At District Contest in Cozad, Sutherland rated very high, receiving nine superiors and seven excellents. These were won by the Mixed Chorus which sang O Bone Jesu and Ching a Ring Chaw ; the Boys' Glee sing- ing The Rebel Soldier ; the Girls' Glee singing Three Brahms Love Songs”; and the Girls' Trio. Soloists receiving superiors were Donnye Bowden, Nancy Borron, Marcia Crosby, Pat Thomas, Lyle Dike, and Elaine Crosby. A Spring music concert was held in May following these contests, with all superior ratings performing in a gardenlike atmosphere. Accompanists for the groups this year were Susie Beeson and Marcia Crosby - two girls who put in many extra hours of prac- tice to make these groups successful.
