SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE It might seem appropriate to say something concerning the years now past, reviewing in memory the struggles and accomplishments of the class, but looking back will do nothing for us today, nor will it help us solve the problems of tomorrow. Dickerson, will my linebacker position in football to Marlin White since he will receive it anyway. I also will my ability to score twenty points a game to John Colburn since he has such a hard time scoring points. I, Don Funk, after writing my will twice, will my writing ability to any future senior who is afraid of writer's cramp. I, Garry Morris, will my bulldozing ability in football to Marlin White and my basketball ability to the Hershey players so we can beat them again next year. I, Robert Louis Munoz, being both of weak mind and spirit, will my ability to talk back to the teachers to Dick Hayes since he is scared stiff at the sight of the poor creatures. I, Dan Ortiz, will my innocent face and ability to get away with pranks to Jim Jochum, who always seems to get caught red-handed. I, Harold Beveridge, will my red hair to Mike Flannigan and my slow thinking to Bill Goedert. I, Sam Thomas, being an ardent Brylcreem user, do hereby bequeath my scaly scalp to any woman who is dumb enough to want to run her fingers through it. I, David Kellie, will my ability to get good grades in chemistry to Dick Hayes since he spends long hours studying it. I, Jim Holm, will my student manager job in football to anyone who thinks they can get along with Mr. O’Neill. I, Patricia Danielson, do hereby regret that I am the last of the Danielsons. I do hereby will to the Sutherland High School our abilities and many happy memories. I, Janice Binegar, will my bold ways to Mary Goedert since she is such a shy, reserved child. I also will my pessimistic ways to Connie Glaze since she is so conceited. I, Janet Sandburg, will my ability to be calm to Connie Glaze because she is always so flustered. I, Sandy Arnold, will my ability to win FFA ribbons and to get good grades in Ag to Milan Moore because he has such a hard time in school. I will all my teachers to anyone who is dumb enough to take them. I, Linda Broge, do hereby will my bumps and bruises received in volleyball to Virginia Kennedy since she never falls and hum herself in practice. I also will my stature to Carolyn Crosby because I know she won't mind a few extra inches. I, Doug Richards, will my ability to get along with everybody that wants to get along with me to anybody who wants to get along with everybody that wants to get along with him or her. I also will my uncles' little blue Ford to anyone that can talk him out of it and keep it running. I, Dennis Beeson, will my ability to be sneaky to Mr. Bowden so he can catch Ivan Dike stealing milk from the school's cooler. I, James Holmstedt, will my place on the honor roll to my sister, Connie, and my ability to be late for music to anyone who WALKS downstairs. I, Lois Dike, will my ability to get by with swiping cookies and candy in the Home Ec room to Jan Brownell and Barb Dickerson. I will to my classmate, Sam Thomas, my ability to keep my complaints about my grades to myself because he'll need it in college. I, Terry Powell, being weak, will my little strength to Bill Goedert so he can defend himself against his many girl friends. I also will him my strong mind so he can combat his strong imagination. I, Janice Chase, will my ability to get along with all the teachers to anyone who can use it, and my ability to talk in Mr. Bowden's study hall to Connie Holmstedt because she is always so quiet. History Of the Senior Class of 1961 only 10 of the present 20 were members of the original class, they were: Don Funk, Jim Holm, Janice Binegar, Garry Morris, Jim Dickerson, Janice Chase, Patty Danielson, James Holmstedt, Lois Dike, and Dan.Ortiz. Our first grade teacher was Mrs. Sterns. Our second grade teacher was Mrs. Brownell. In that year the class gained one new pupil, Dennis Beeson, only to lose another, Dwaine Sherman. To begin the third grade the class took in five new pupils. They were Harley Stauffer, Harold Beveridge, Lorna Hahn, Sandy Arnold and Gene D. Moude. We lost Rodney Meyen, Virginia Rowley, and Ronald Rowley. Miss Schuler was our third grade teacher. Mrs. Koster was our fourth grade teacher. The class gained two new pupils, Tony Vigil and Linda Broge. The class gained, three more pupils in the 5th grade; Phylis Barr, Larry Gill, and Virginia Rowley returned after a year's absence, also Tony Vigil moved away. Our Teacher was Mrs. Guffey. In the sixth grade the class gained five pupils: Terry Powell, Beth Hen- ningson, Sharlene Thomas, David Kelly, and Shirley Sanders, but lost one classmate. Gene DaMoude. We had three teachers: Mrs. Penning, Miss Boyle, and Miss Jacobs. For the seventh year our teacher was Mrs. Beatty. That year the class lost four students, who were: Phylis Barr, Sharlene Thomas, Shirley Sanders, and Harley Stauffer. For the eighth and final year in grade school our teacher was Mr. Vawser. The Class received two more pupils; Jeri Leonhardt, and Sam Thomas. We also lost two Virginia Rowley, and Pat Stubbs. The Class of 1961 entered high school with 22 members. During our Fresh- man year we gained Maurice Bayne and Janet Sandberg. Maurice left us at the end of the first semester. As Sophomores we gained two new members, Bob Munoz and Doug Richards. Jeri Leonhardt, Lorna Hahn, and Vicki Vega were lost from the class. In our Junior year we again decreased in number by losing Larry Gill and Angela Hernandez. The Class of 1961 remained unchanged in our final year of school. BOWDEN The Student Council represents each class and each school organi- zation. This year the Student Council sponsored the annual formal Christ- mas Party. Bum Day and Dress-Up Day were held by the high school in another Student Council activity. To further student interest in the care and management of the school, the Student Council campaigned for the participation of all students in a program for the general improvement of the school grounds. Janice Chase and Garry Morris were crowned at half-time. A dance was held after the game. Pep Club and Letter Club held a banquet at the Country Club in North Platte. The first-team cheerleaders wore sailor-styled blouses and sailor slacks made of red cotton cord. The slacks had insets of the same material. The blouses were accented by a long, white tie. White bobby socks and red tennis shoes completed the outfit. For basketball they wore white blouses and skirts made of corduroy. The blouse was accented by an emblem. Red bobby socks and white shoes completed their outfits. Second- learn (Cheerleaders Left to right: Virginia Maxwell, Connie Glaze, Mike Flannigan. The second-team cheerleaders wore white, corduroy, gored skirts lined in striped cotton. The blouses were trimmed in red and white emblems. The four plays which were presented at the annual Play festival this year were: Fog, Three Taps on a Wall, Polly Put the Kettle On, and So Wonderful in White. Another play, I Never said a Word But, was presented earlier in a high school assembly. So Wonderful in White was the play chosen to be taken to the district contest which was held at Overton, Nebraska. This play was directed by Mr. Dean Schmid. Some of the activities our chapter participated in during the year were: State leadership camp, Lincoln county fair, Dist. Tractor Driving contest, Dist. Range Judging contest, Denver Stock Show, Dist. Public Speaking and Demonstration contest, and the State Judging contest and Convention. Also during the year the chapter held its annual slave sale, our net income from this project was $260. Our chapter parent and son banquet was held April 19. The girls have spent most of their time playing volleyball and softball. The junior and senior girls enjoyed a trip to Lincoln in May. They took a tour of the University of Nebraska campus. The Sailors outlasted Hershey in the opening game of the season, winning 8-6 on a touchdown by Meyen and a safety by the hard-charging Sailor line. The talented Sailors rushed to a 33-7 over the hapless Lodgepole Panthers, on their second game of the season. Lightning” Rod Meyen swept for two TD's; Bulldozer Garry Morris charged for 1; H. Beveridge and M. White each added a tally; Milan The Toe” Moore added 2 extra pts. The Sailors prevailed in their third game, winning a tight 20-19 hard-fought battle. Beveridge, Powell, and Moore each scored a TD. Moore passed to Powell and Beveridge for 2 PAT’S against St. Pats. Continuing their winning streak, the Big Red booted Paxton 12-6. Li tming struck for two TD's. The Sailors suffered their only loss of the season to Stapleton 0-6 in a tare-fota t contest which saw a Sailor TD called back because of a penalty. Regaining their winning form, the Sailors trounced the Try on Londons 26-6. B—- dozer Morris charged for 2 TD's and added 1 PAT. M. Moore added a TD, an c —in- ning Rod scored 1 TD and 1 PAT. Big Springs proved to be little competition for the veteran Sailor team.
