We hope everyone liked The Senior Play—Room No. 13. 10 Senior Skip Day The senior class of 1950 accompanied by their sponsor, Mr. Thelen, hung our class colors of green and white all over the town of Sutherland at twelve o’clock, midnight. We left Sutherland at two-thirty a. m. by four sponsored cars May 19. We arrived in Colorado Springs at eight o’clock Friday morning. We ate a hearty breakfast and started out for the famous Pikes Peak. After we had seen all the most important places, we left Pikes Peak at two o’clock p. m. and ate dinner. Then we ventured on to the Cave of the Winds,” and later went to see “The Cliff Dwellings, and we traveled along the Cheyenne Mountains Highway, to Broadmoor, Colorado. We ate supper and stayed over night at the Stratton Hotel in Colorado Springs. Some of us took in a show, but most of us turned in for the night. We arose early Saturday morning, ate a good breakfast of ham and eggs, then went to see the “Garden of the Gods. Then we ventured along the South Cheyenne Canon” and into Denver. Some of us did some shopping for souvenirs, and etc, and ate supper at six thirty. Then the happy, but tired group of seniors left Denver and headed for home. We all enjoyed this skip day very much, and we hope the seniors of the future years will have as much fun as we did wherever they go on their skip day. 11 The Seniors Last Will and Testament I, Ruthe Leonhardt, will my interest in the Paxton boys to the Freshman girls so they won’t be so lonesome next year as they were this year. I, Barbara Jean Harshfield hereby officially will my ability to b? noisy and silly to Joan Goedert so S.H.S. won’t be so dull and quiet next year, and she isn’t ornery enough to suit me. I also will my height to Bonnie Lee Godeker, because she is too short and I’m too tall. I, Tom Kennedy, will my ability to control my temper to the Junior Class as they are so hot headed and need a steady influence. I, Don Fleecs, will my ability to get along with the referee in the great sport of football to any under class man who may have the same trouble. I, Delores DePriest will my ability to get along with boys to Ruth Richardson, cause she seems to need it. I, Barbara Kallhoff, will my everlasting vim, vigor, and vitality to LaVern Bayne cause he needs a little pep. I, Don Rotert, will my ability to have fun in physics class to any other poor dumb sucker who take it next year. I, Norma Bierma will my ability to get acquainted and go with out of town guys to Katie Rennemo so she can have lots of fun too. I, Ron Warner, will my ability to get along with the English teacher to Francis Fleecs so he may stay in class more than two days a week. I, Lucile Brown, will my loud volume to Melvin Earney because he talks too low, and I talk too loud, I also will my ability to get my car to any poor dumb kids in S.H.S. who have to walk. I, Jim Godeker will my ability to get in trouble with the teacher to Arlene Keuter, I think she may need it. I, Mary Lou Orocso, will my hair to Betty Boyer because she’s got too and I haven’t enough. I, Tom Yost, hereby will my Model A to Phillip Merrill because I won’t need it any more, by the way Phil it sets in the canyon at Maxwell. I, Audrey Emery will the hole in my head where my brains are supposed to be to anyone who has too many brains. I, Lila Cook, will all my previous boy friends to anybody who needs one so all the girls can walk around twitterpated. I, Jim Freeman, will my singing ability to Lee Fear so he can be a Frankie too. I, Loren Hilton, will my ability to sing to Mary Lou Coleman so she can serenade Tom Kennedy on moonlight nights. We. the Senior Boys hereby will our athletic ability to the sophomore boys cause they’ll need it, sure as shootin. We the Senior Girls hereby will our ability to get boyfriends to the Freshman girls so they won’t chase the Senior boys of next year. We the Super Seniors of 1950 hereby will all our various abilities such as; athletics, music, scholastic, dramatic, romantic and others to all the other classes of S. H. S. 12 Senior Class Prophesy Here we are in the year of 1960, ten years after the graduation of a truly fine Senior Class of Sutherland High. Let’s see what the graduates of 1950 are doing now. Mary Lou Orosco has become a very famous star in Hollywood. She has three beautiful mansions at Beverly Hills. Delores DePriest is still being teased by the Senior boys of ’50 about George Crosby, but since they are married it doesn’t matter. Don Rotert always did like to hunt and fish and now that he is game-warden he hunts and fishes the year around. Ruth Leonhardt is a secretary at the Marquette Manufacturing Co. at Sarben, incidentally she married the president, George Marquette. Loren Hilton was President of the F.F.A. and it seems the idea of Presidency went to his head, because he is now President of the United States. Norma Bierma was going to be a teacher, so Deri Scofield gave her a job of teaching their children. On any lazy, summer afternoon, you can still see Jim Godeker loafing around the streets of Sutherland. Lila Cook is still waiting for Bob Fleecs to make his first million so they can get married. Tom Yost was always a good talker so now he is an auctioneer. You can see him standing in the streets of Maxwell auctioning off old buildings. Barbara Kallhoff always wanted to be a singer so she took Kate Smith’s place on NBC. Tom Kennedy is still giving Mary Lou a bad time. It seems he’s been married several times, but Mary Lou is still waiting for him. Lucile Brown finally found her millionaire. If you see a flashy red convertible whiz by, you’ll know it’s her. Ron Warner is still black mailing any one whom he can get some scandalous information of! Audrey Emery took Don Staples away from her sister and now they are living up near Arthur on a dude ranch where he is employed. Jim Freemon now owns a used car lot. By the way you can hear him on JFBS (Jim Freemons Broadcasting Station) singing used car advertisements. Don Fleecs just bought another new Ford. Seems he has wrecked nine of them since he graduated. After teaching for five years Barbara Harshfield finally saved up enough money to get a new car. Now you can see Billy Trego driving it under her supervision. 13 Freshman Initiation Thursday, September 29, the Freshies came to school in the cutest costumes. They wore long-legged underwear, striped stockings, short skirts, shirts inside out and backwards and green ribbons around their ankles. Both th eboys and the girls had their hair in pin curls. In the morning they were decorated by the Seniors with lots of liostick and rouge and “Freshie” written across their noses in green. They spent the entire day obeying the Seniors, The next evening they wore these same costumes to the initiation party. They walked the plank, had a mixture of feathers, macaroni, and tomatoes put on their faces and limburger cheese put under their noses. After this was over we had a hilarious Truth or Consequences Program. A lunch of ice cream, cake, and pop was served. Three of our Freshies were so unfortunate as to miss out on this delicious lunch because they were cleaning fly paper off their feet. This was the result of the Truth or Consequences Program. Everyone will now admit, even the Freshmen, that they had a good time but wouldn’t want to go through it again. 14 The Studious Juniors r- Back row: left to right: Marvin Shively, George Crosby, P. Merrill, L. Campbell. Middle row: L. Kirts, K. Coker, R. Danielson, F. Fleecs, C. Biiiegar, II. Grauerholz, D. Kugler, J. Leonhardt, B. Winkle. Front row: Mrs. Babbitt. M. Kuenle, M. Weir, G. Kramer, J. Warren, A. Vasa, J. Ecker, M. Coleman. Activities We started out the year with twenty members in our class, with Agnes Vasa entering at the first of the year. Mrs. Paul Babbitt was our class sponsor. We enjoyed having her as our sponsor very much. Class officers were elected as follows: President _____________________________________________ Chet Binegar Vice-President_________________________________________ __Don Kugler Secretary-Treasure____________________________________ Phillip Merrill Sag-of-arms_____________________________________________Gene Kramer Our class motto is “A winner never quits and a quitter never wins.” Our class colors are wine and gray, and our flower is the white carnation. This was the second year that the Junior class was able to go to County Govern- ment day in North Platte. This was very interesting experience, and we all enjoyed it. We have enjoyed this year very much and look forward to being good Seniors next year. 15 Junior Class Play Bolts and Nuts CHARACTERS BENITA BOLT LUTIE SPINKS REBECCA BOLT........... DON KUGLER JOYCE LEONHARDT HERMAN GRAUERHOLZ ----- BEVERLY WINKLE .......GENE KRAMER -----GEORGE CROSBY The setting of the play was at the Bolt Sanitarium when Miss Rebecca Bolt, whose hobby was psychoanalysis, inherited a spooky old mansion from an eccent- ric brother and turned it into a sanitarium for patients with phobias and nervous diseases much to the dismay of her niece, Benita. Whereupon the nuts started to pour in, and the fun began in earnest. Lutie Spinks, the man hating maid had a nervous habit of winking that got her into trouble with flirtatious men patients. Gertie Glossip, had a contagion- phobia and all but assphysiated everybody else with her various spraying machines. Cadwalleder Clippy, had a catphobia and was frightened nearly out of his wits by his pet cat of malicious littl Wilbur, a problem child. Prunella Figg, suffered from claustrophobia. Martha Grubb, the cook, fairly wallowed in melancholy, and Plunkett, the foxy family lawyer, developed a persecution com- plex while Henry, the darky porter, harbored a natural fear of lunatics and all their works. Even Twink Starr, Benita’s young man whose suit was tabooed by Rebecca, joined the company of nuts in disguise, parading an acute case of delusions of grandeur in hope of finding a chance to soften the hard heart of Rebecca. Hiliarious situations developed with Dr. Hippocrates Joy, a synthetic psychiatriast who undertook to cure the patients. Complications multiplied as Rebecca searched for her brother’s money. It was hidden in the house and anyone finding it could keep part of it. The people were faking their phobias and looking for the money. Its final discovery through the ingenuity of Twink Starr, forms a fitting climax for this fast moving farce of many laughs. Thanks to the hard work of Miss McConnell and Mrs. Fincey, the juniors presented a creditable performance. 16 Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom On May 9, 1950, the Juniors had as their guests the Seniors of fifty. They were taken to an Old-Fashioned Garden by the way of the Sutherland High School Gymnasium. A rose-covered arch provided the entrance to the garden. Near the arch was a wishing well. Grass and flowers added realism and Chinese lanterns furnished a festive appearance. Crepe paper streamers of French blue hung from the ceiling. It was a very colorful garden and every one had an enjoyable time. Dancing took place after the banquet. Music was furnished by the sound projector film entitled “Dance Date.” The program was as follows: Toastmaster Welcome to Seniors Response_______________ Welcome to Faculty Response Hobo Act_______________ Solo___________________ Quartet________________ Ron Danielson --------Chet Binegar -----------Don Fleecs ___Gene Kramer Miss McConnell Bill Hoewing Barbara Kallhoff Phillip Merrill Don Kugler Mary Louise Coleman Jean Warren The food was prepared by the junior mothers and it was very delicious. All Voices In Kindergarten and First Grade, we have two major projects this term. One was an Indian Study. The other was a Bird Study. A seed-collection was made last September. For the educational Week Program the Second Grade said the poems, “Hats Off” and “The Little Elf Man.” Lee McKinley carried the flag for us. During the year the Third Grade dramatized many stories, learned several poems and liked school in general. The Fourth Grade organized an English Club which met once a week. Many interesting topics, news items and poems were read or told by the pupils. Our toy store was an aid in learning to make change. The Fifth Grade had two class speakers for Geography class. They proved very interesting and informative. Also some films in connection with Georgraphy lessons were shown. The Sixth Grade’s projects in History of Nebraska were outstanding. Scenes were planned and made for each Nebraska phrase from pre-historic to modern times. We, also, mastered the art of knitting and everyone made a pincushion. In the Seventh Grade, an exhibit was held of the textile painting done by the girls. The boys took part in several basketball games and played in the grade school tournament. The Eighth Grade took part in the grade operetta, in the grade basketball tournament and in the Home Economics “Tea” for the mothers. 48 Advertisements 49 CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SENIOR CLASS 01' 1950 The MARS Shoppe flT.nnnnr Tlnin Pn Ready-to-Wear—Millinery vj uuiiiiui ui uy uu.
