DEDICATION: FRANCIS HALVERSON “A MAN WHO LOVED HIS JOB” The Senior Class of 1986, would like to dedicate their 1986 annual to a man we all knew very well, Francis Halverson. As we all know, Francis Halverson was a man who loved his job very much. Francis always enjoyed taking care of the school and even more so he loved being around the kids in school. Mr. Halverson was employed by the Sutherland and Calumet School Systems since 1956. While being employed with the school system, he served as a custodian and a bus driver. Francis was a tireless worker. He would put in a full days work at school helping teachers and students, and then he would work with the people of the community. If you wanted a job to get done, you would not have to ask Francis more than once. Most of the time, the job was down even before you asked. The biggest thing that stood out in the students’ and teachers’ minds was that the job was always completed with a smile on his face. We will all remember Francis with fond memories and that familiar line, ‘Ya ba da ba du, Six Foot Two and a Bow Tie.” CLASS MOTTO “NOT BETTER THAN THE BEST; BUT BETTER THAN THE REST” 6 All My Children Row 1: J. SCHOOL BOARD SUPERINTENDENT PRINCIPALS, AND SECRETARIES No major changes at the high school building were seen in the past year. The elementary building did see a new face roaming the halls. The new face was that of Mrs. Charlene Carrigan. She completed her 1st year as Mr. Gould’s secretary. Everything and eve- rybody got along pretty well. Things seemed to run just as smooth as they have in the past. . Joe Sweeney. Mr.-Brandt. Harry Richard Hick9. Nto torstmann. . The main attraction was the game against Sanborn that evening. But, the many activities that led up to the game were just as exciting. The Home- coming festivities got underway at 12:30, with the procession of the King and Queen candidates, who waited for the moment when the King and Queen would be chosen. The pep meeting was led by the cheerleaders. The speaker at the pep meeting was Carolyn Rohr- baugh, who recognized the football players and their coaches. The time had come! Tension rose when Marsha Negus and Ned Dau, 1984's King and Queen, crowned 1985’s Queen Rachel Dau and King Tim Rohrbaugh. The parade followed with floats from the middle school and freshman, sopho- more, junior, and senior classes, which were made especially for this event. The drill team performed in front of the crowds and the firetrucks followed car- rying the football and volleyball players. The festivities ended with the big game that night. The team played a super game but lost the game to Sanborn 19- 7. Half-time brought a great perfor- mance by the band and also the placing of the floats was announced. First place went to the sophomore’s float; second- juniors; third-seniors; fourth-freshmen. The night ended with a dance featuring Audio Sensations. Every day the stu- dents had special clothing to wear to help them find the Homecoming spirit. Monday-Hat and Shades; Tuesday- Backwards and Inside-out; Wednesday- Fifties and Nerds; Thursday-Boxer- shorts and PJ’s; Friday-Orange and Black day. All and all the 1985 Home- coming festivities were a big success. vicrut HOMECOMING 1985 25 Sutherland’s 1985 Homecoming Royalty FALL ONE - ACT PLAYS Row 1: C Magnussen. S. Heys. K. Laue, P Hill. A special thanks should also go to the lighting and stage crew, Michael Fuhrman, Blake Jurgensen, Tim Rohrbaugh, Joe Gerstandt, Frank Heys, who helped make the show a big success. On this night, nothing could keep Sutherland High from hopping, not even the dreary rain that fell outside. The evening began with pictures from Jon's Photography at 6:30 p.m. Amy Fogelman, Kelly Bird, David Faust, and Craig Clayberg were chosen to be waitresses and waiters for the evening. The dance began at 8:00 with Series of Movements play- ing the latest hits. The theme “In The Air Tonight” proved to be true. Excitement was everywhere. Denise Jalas and Mark Fuhrman was crowned Queen and King. With music and a beautifully decorated gym, thanks to the juniors, the even- ing seemed to fly by. Twelve o’clock came much too soon. Following the dance, an After Prom Party was held at Center Attractions, sponsored by the Sutherland Recreation Center. Movies and Casino games kept eve- ryone busy. Food was provided. Prizes were given away in numbers. These prizes were donated by the people of Calumet and Sutherland. None could help but have a great time. The night was a complete success. 38 40 ACTIVITIES BANQUET On the night of April 7, the Sutherland High School held it’s annual activities banquet in the gym of the Sutherland High School. The buffet-style dinner began at 6.30 with the jazz band starting at 7:30 performing musical selections. Following the jazz band, students received awards for their involvement in extra-curricular activities. Also at this time. Sue Schimmer was awarded the United States Marines Bulldog Award and Vicki Rahbusch was awarded the Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award. The highlight of the evening, however, was our speaker, Larry Korver, who is the head football coach at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. He spoke of the part the community plays in extra-curricular activities. The evening gave everyone a sense of school pride. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY On May 14 the Sutherland chapter of the National Honor Society held it’s annual induc- tion ceremony. The ceremony was conducted by Mr. Schnelle and the four present members: Tracey Bird, Sheila Kruse, Vicki Rahbusch, and Brad Rohwer. Six new students were initiated as honored members. They were: Cammy Brandt, Janet Gopperton, Denise Jalas, John Reimann, Diana Greeley, and Kevin Roemmich. After the ceremony the members and their parents enjoyed donuts and punch. It was a special and honorable night for all. S-CLUB Row Is L Rehder, R. Dau, B. Huffman, E. Pingel, S. Fault, A. Fogelman, J. Schoening, S. Brandt. J. Putnam. K. Horton. C. Brandt. Row 2: J. The year proved to be very enjoyable but competi- tive. The team ended up with a 4-4 overall record and a 3-4 record in the conference. Even though the season did not go as well as they hoped, the Tigers were never so far behind in the 4th quarter that they couldn’t come back and win. They were very aggressive and gave it all they had. Those graduating seniors consisted of: Mark Fuhrman. Joe Gerstandt. Bruce Hartman, Frank Heys. Pat Hill, John Reimann. Tim Rohrbaugh, Troy Swier, Nathan Weathers. These players positions will have to be filled next year by some of the promising underclassmen. Overall the Tigers have proved to be an outstanding football team year after year. Good job and good luck next year. The Tigerettes achieved a 6-1 record in the Sioux Valley Conference which led them to a share in the conference title with Primghar. Winning the title the year before, the Tigerettes continued their success. They finished the season with a shin- ing record of 18-7. All of this was due to their determination and desire to win. The season began on August 19. before school had even begun. The strenuous 2-a-day practices consisted of getting in shape (which the girls were not) and learning the basic funda- mentals of the sport. The Tigerettes got their experience by non-conference games and tournaments. The Tigerettes attended two tournaments, one at Aurelia and the 2nd at Sutherland. In the tournament at Aurelia, the Tigerettes won the title by defeating Albert City-Truesdale who had beat them earlier in the day. In the tournament held at Sutherland, an excellent team from Laurens-Marathon won the Varsity, while Cherokee dominated in the JV action. The heartbreak of the season happened in sectional play at Paullina, when the Bulldogs of Primghar nipped the Tigerettes 3-2. The Tigerettes were led by Seniors: Vicki Rahbusch, Tra- cey Bird. Regan Huffman, Car- men Swanson, and Sharon Petersen. Following in their footsteps were the Juniors, Sophomores, and many Fresh- men who will be ready to take their place next year. The 1985-86 Tiger Basketball team suffered through a rather difficult sea- son. Under 2nd year head coach Scott Shields, the Tigers ended up posting a 4-16 overall record. The team worked very hard in practice and in the ball games, but lost some very close games. With a few lucky bounces or breaks here and there, the teams’ record could have been considerably better. The seniors providing the team with leader- ship and determination were Frank Heys, Mark Fuhrman, and Tim Roh- rbaugh. Their abilities on and off the B- Ball floor will be missed greatly. A large number of young players will be called upon next year to provide the nucleus of a solid basketball team. All in all. it was a very good season for the Tigers, in that they learned a great deal about them- selves as people, not just as players. A Job Well Done!! 60 Cory Jungfohan, Craig Jungjohan, C. They were under the direction of 1st year head coach Gerry Stein and assistant Dave Clayberg. The new coaching staff led the girls through drills and conditioning until their first match on November 22 with Everly. From there until the very end it was all uphill. The conference contests began on Dec. 3 with Sanborn. Each game was a learning experience, while they disco- vered their weaknesses and worked to improve upon them. Although many games were very close, hard work paid off and the Tigerettes became the Sioux Valley Con- ference Champs. This was the 2nd con- secutive year the girls had earned the title. The only loss throughout the regular sea- son was to 3rd rated Marcus. The Tigerettes went down to defeat by a mere five points. Tournaments began on February 17, with sectional play at Hartley against Primghar. The Tigerettes blew them away. The score ended up 94-68. This win meant the next foe for the Sutherland girls would be the Hartley Hawkettes on Feb. 19. The Tigerettes had beaten Hartley twice during the regular season but the third time around turned out to be a nightmare for the girls. Nothing seemed to go right The hopes that the girls had for advancing were shattered. Looking back through the season, the girls must try to remember all the great accomplishments that they had achieved. 63 JUNIOR HIGH BOYS’ BASKETBALL Row 1: J. Moermond, K. Virgil, J. Fiddelke, B. In the 2 that they didn't win, they placed 2nd at Milford and at the conference meet. They had a number of events qualify for the state track meet. The events that scored points for the Tigers at state were the 4 x 100,4 x 200, and the 4 x 400 relays. Each relay received 2 points for finishing in 5th place. The Tigers were led by an outstanding group of seniors. Their leadership and hard work will be missed next season. A number of underclassmen will be called upon to provide the nucleus for another outstanding track season. Coaches Clayberg and Vige should be commended for their coaching talents. 66 TIGERETTE TRACK Row 1: D. Horstmann, S. Hoyt, C. Magnussen. S. Faust, M. Hallman, K. Laua, 0. Jurgansan. Row 2: M. In March, the girls’ track team started practice; those practices consisted of stretching, aerobics and run- ning. It was a rebuilding year for the team; as there were three seniors and one junior, and 15 under- classmen. Everybody worked very hard during the season, and although they did not win a meet there were many individual goals achieved. There were two girls that qualified for the State Track Meet. They were Susan Brandt in the discus and Vicki Rahbusch in the discus and shot put. Neither of the girls made finals in discus. But, Vicki placed third in the shot put with a throw of 39' 5 , which was also a school record. Vicki also broke a record in the discus with a throw of 113' 3 . With all of the young girls on the team, next year looks very promising. 68 Row 1: H. Farquhar. S. Urban. D. VanderPol. D. VanderPol. C. Mills. P. Davis. Row 2: M. Miller. R. Heys. M. Fuhrman, J. Denise Jalas, Sheila Kruse, Jodi Putnam, Susan Brandt, Cherie Streufert, Amy Nilles, and Janet Gopperton. The advisor was Mr. Janssen. Eve- ryone worked very hard doing a variety of jobs. The whole group sold ads and collected money for the ads. The seniors put most of the annual pages together with some help from the underclass- men. A highlight of the year was a Valentines Day Dance sponsored by the Annual Staff. The money raised from the dance was put toward the annual. Members of the Newspaper Staff were Janet Gopperton, Cammy Brandt, and Sheila Gaskill. The advisor was Mr. Janssen. The group put together a monthly newspaper entitled The Tiger Times. It mainly consisted of senior interviews, school happen- ings and short comical sayings. 71 TIGER BASEBALL Row 1: Matt Trost, Jason Kruse, David Faust, Brian Goettsch, Bill Magnusson, Kan Nelson, Jody Rickers. Row 2: Rob Rickers, Eric Pingel, Kevin Roemmich, Craig Clayberg, Don Trost. Row 3: John Jackson, Denny Olhausen, Brad Rohwer, Mark Fuhrman. Mr. Trost opened as the new 1986 Tiger baseball coach. Providing the senior leadership was Mark Fuhrman. Many underclassmen are expected to play a great deal and see much varsity action. The junior varsity program was dropped because lack of players. Mr. Trost has put in a great deal of time in preparing for the 1986 season. He feels the conference will be strong and the overall schedule will be very challeng- ing. In early season ballgames the Tigers have beaten Marcus and Sioux Valley. Losses came at the hands of Everly, Sanborn, and Alta. With everyone working hard and keeping a good attitude, the season will surely be a success.! ’3 TIGERETTE SOFTBALL Row 1: S. Brandi, A. Fogelman, A. Nilles, S. Faust, K. Bird, B. Huffman. Row 2: C. Grause, S. Petersen, V. Rahbusch, T. Bird, C. Swanson, Coach Dickmoyer. The 1986 softball season started in May, just as track season was finishing. Everyone gets excited for softball, because soft- ball means summer. This sport gives the girls a chance to get together during their 3 months off. The Tigerettes first game was against Sioux Valley whom they easily beat, which put them off to a great start. As of now, the Tigerettes are 4-1 and 2-0 in the conference. The varsity team includes Sharon Petersen, Car- men Swanson, Tracey Bird, Stacy Faust, Amy Nilles, Brooke Huffman, Carol Grause, Kelly Bird, and Amy Fogelman. Junior Varsity includes: Tricia Kruse, Kristi Laue, Cindy Magnussen, Robin Heys, Andy Rehder, Shelley Carrigan, Christi Jalas, Angie Rohwer, Jana Clayberg, Melissa Heilman, Sandy Heys. The team has a busy schedule with close to twenty games. With 3 to 4 games a .week, the Tigerettes have to be tough, needing eve- ryone to have success. In 1986, just as in many years past, this success will be largely due to Coach Dickmeyer, who is very well liked and respected by the entire squad. So far the team has really enjoyed themselves which will most likely continue on... J. V. SOFTBALL Row 1: T. Kruse, K. Laue, C. Magnussen, R. Heys, A. Rehder. Row 2: S. Carrigan, C. Jalas, A.
