SUTHERLAND COMMU SUTHERLAND, IOWA INDEX 1-20 ACADEMICS 21-43 STUDENT LIFE 44-67 SPORTS 68-75 UPPER CLASSMEN 76 - END ADS OUR BRIGHT LOOKING ADVISOR, NOTE THE INTELLIGENT LOOK ABOUT HIM WELCOME We searched for ideas with which to open our book. The ideas came slowly and our minds were boggled. Then we came across this pic- ture of our most ambitious student showing the rest of the class how it's really done. We felt that this picture depicted school life in gen- eral. It is the basis of all the student's ideas and actions. If it weren't for this large part of school, people would have nothing to look forward to and nothing to keep them going through the day. So for all of you people who are wide awake and always alert, put your head down and space it out, you'll be a better person for doing it. 3 Kindergarten: Row 1: Mrs. Martin, M. Bobzien, R. Pictured above on top are the elementary cooks who take care of the high school as well. They are: Micki Haht, Karen Thomas, Colleen Friedrichsen, and Mildred Darr. To the left is our fearless high school custodian Ray Brechwald. Pictured just above is Rick Giese who takes care of the elementary buildings. 20 Another hard-working individual who didn't get his picture taken is Francis Halverson who works at the junior high. MINI SWING SHOW In the summer of 77, the stage band and swing choir were invited to perform for the band directors from this area. The mini swing show was held at the Marina Inn in Sioux City. The band and choir were fed a great meal before they played and were all well satisfied by it. It was fun and was a good experience for all the kids. Our melodrama play was a success this year. We felt that it was much better than past plays, mainly because of the show girls. There was a meal served before the play which con- sisted of ham or salsbury steak. These were sided by baked spuds, com, and a salad bar. There was pre-show enter- tainment which consisted of singers such as Peg Schimmer, Kathy DeBoom, Dale Watterson, a boys quartet, and a girls trio. The audience also got into the act by taking part in a sing - along. Everybody had a good time and enjoyed the show. We would like to thank the teachers that helped to put it together. Come Sail Away was the theme for the 1978 Junior-Sen- ior Prom held on the 22nd of April. The gym and refresh- ment room were decorated with blue and white stream- ers, fish net, and shells. A mural hung on one wall of the gym and pictures were taken by a boat. The evening be - gan at 8:00 with music by NAN. The Junior Welcome was given later by Ric Sickelka which was acknowledged by David Sickelka. Punch and snacks, which included sand- wiches , bars, cookies, potato chips, and pickles, were served by four sophomores: Sue Bina, Mary Ann Hill, Doug Dau, and Dan Sweeney. 29 HIGH SCHOOL BAND (Above picture) Front Row: L. The cast included: Dan Bird, Todd Sohn, Dave Cacek, Dale Watterson, Brent Alexander, and Mike Grothe as well as two non-class members, September Stettnichs and Cheryl Amendt. The stu- dents fired up for Homecoming during the week previous by decorating their lockers, decorating the halls, helping the cheerleaders decorate the gym, building floats, and wearing funny little booster pins that roared 1 'Gnr''. At long last the day that everyone had worked so hard for, arrived in all of its regal splendor. Homecoming Day, September 23, 1977, be- gan with the coronation of Deb Litka and Russ Steele as Homecoming Queen and King. Immediately following the coronation ceremony, a pep meeting took place which in- cluded cheers, skits, a speech by Mr. Dana Vige, and a game of Simon Says'1 lead by Mr. Joe Sweeney. To the disap- pointment of everyone, tlie parade which usually follows the pep meeting, had to be postjxmed due to the rainy weather. RICK JAN CHRISTINE, The parade was then re-scheduled for the following week, only to be postponed to the following week again due to the nasty weather. This pattern of re - scheduling and postponing continued over the next few weeks, until finally it was decid- ed that the parade was never meant to be, hence the year 1977 never saw a homecoming parade at Sutherland. But un- hindered by the weather and the lack of a parade, the Tiger fans still crowded around the gushy, muddy football field to watch their team do battle with the Paullina Panthers on a cold, drizzly Friday night. Even though the game's outcome was 48-18 in favor of Paullina, the Tigers fought with cour- age and pride. The day ended with the Homecoming Dance, being played at by 1 'The Bandsmen and Kathy . Parents and students alike came and danced and everyone had a real fine time. Despite the weather and the game's outcome, Home- coming 1977 was a success, for the spirit shown that day by the fans and the team was enough to make any day bright. 1- The alumni speaker for this year's pep meeting- the dash- ing Joe Sweeney. 2- Twirlers Teresa P., Renee S., and Nancy F.; play with fire at half time. 3- Dan B. romps thru the sign as the Tigers take the field the to begin the 2nd half. 4- Julie C. and Rich C. can be seen roaming the decorated halls of the S.H.S. around Homecoming time. 5- The high school float this year showed Snoopy ' 'whaling'' on a pan- ther. It was a very nice day and as usual the gym was packed. There was a total of fourty seniors that graduated. The band played a number and Lori Steele played a solo on her trum- pet. There were four seniors that gave graduation speeches. They were Dale Watterson, Dave Sickelka, Kathy Rhode, and Tami Woolston. It was a rather successful aftemon, nobody tripped or dropped their caps. Richard Hicks the president of the school board presented the diplomas, and Richard Fidellke took pictures. We would like to apologize for not having more pictures of this event which is so important to the seniors. The film which the graduation pictures were on was accidently exposed and none of the pictures turned out. CLASS OFFICERS P.l, front row- P. Schirmner, V. Fischer, row 2, R. Steele, D. Sickelka, D.
