PRESENTING THE 1977 TIGER Sutherland Community School Sutherland, Iowa We, the Seniors of 1977 dedicate this annual to the Small Town School. People say a Small Town School can t offer the variety of courses or fancy facilities a large school can. We know though that those are not the only assets a school has. A Small Town School offers something much more, it offers a sense of individuality that a large school can't. When you walk down the halls of a Small Town School, you know everyones' name and they know yours. Isn't that more important than the course selection? Now with rising inflation and dropping enrollment. Small Town Schools all around us are closing their doors. We salute you. The Small Town School for the jobs you've done in educating individuals. We're proud to have graduated from a Small Town School and especially from S.H.S. 2 % Iff? I qa qa on QA 1 4 50 f U I ♦ ♦ SENIORS Cherie Clark Londa Dau Graduation The members of the sen- ior class who had a 90% or higher through all their high school years were recognized. Londa Dau (PICTURED BOTTOM LEFT) re- ceived the Iowa Bar Association Award. Tam Steffen (PIC- TURED BOTTOM RIGHT) received the Sutherland Woman's Club Scholarship. Mike Tewes, Julie Rahbusch and John Bird (THE TOP THREE PICTURES) received the Flinders' Scholarships in memory of Vernon and Patrick Flinders. Our class decided to have seniors write speeches for Commencement instead of hiring a speaker. Mike Tewes thanked the audience for coming to share this special occasion with us and introduced the four senior speakers. Tam Steffen, Sue Rohwer, Amy Engelke, and John Bird. (BOTTOM FIVE PICTURES SENIOR SPEAKERS) SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Sec.-Treas. - Tam Steffen Student Council - Sue Rohwer Councilman at Lg. - Joni Triplett (FRONT) Vice President - Jon Sickelka President - Mike Tewes (BACK) We were happy to have as our senior foreign exchange student this year, Ximena Natalie Arcos. She came to the halls of SHS from Quito, Ecuador. Her American Host family for the year she lived in the United States was Mr. and Mrs. Robert Florine and her American sister, Julie. In this farming community of ours she experienced a different type of living from what hers had been in Ecuador. All her experi- ences here in the States, became just memories she d never forget on July 10, when she flew back to her home in Quito. Ximena’s future plans are to go to the University to study. The Senior Class chose Dan Bird and Deb Litka as our smiling Junior escorts. Also we chose: Class flower- Yellow Rose Class Color- Lt. G Dk. Green Class Motto- Do not follow where the path leads. Rather, go where there is no path and leave a trail. 17 Commencement Exercises were held for the Sutherland grad- uating Class of 1977 in the Sutherland Gym on May 22 at 2:00. Many came to share and help make this milestone in their lives to be a special, memorable occasion for all of them. While the crowd sought their seats, the seniors, nervous and excited, readied themselves for their commencement, an end of high school and a be- ginning of a life of our own reaching to bigger and better things. After a few minutes, Con- gratulations and Good Luck were in order. There were many different expressions. Sad, Happy, and relief. They had finally completed 13 years of school, were now on their own leaving their friends with memories to cherish. FRONT ROW-C. Halbaurer, D. Dailey, T. Goettsch, V, Johannsen, K. Rhode, L. This year was no exception. This year the Tigers qualified 7 gentlemen for the state track meet at Des Moines. These guys were: Jim Mesner- shot put; John Bird- discus; Dale Watterson- mile run; Mike Tewes- 440 yd. dash; Mark Weaver, Chuck VanOverbeke, Jon Negus, Mike Tewes- Mile Relay. One other man that did a fantastic Job this year was our only manager, Richard Craven. Richard put in more hours than anyone. Good job Tigers! . 68 I t A Jim Mesner Mike Tewes John Bird PICTURED ON THIS PAGE are three men that were extremely important to our track team. These fellows as seniors, not only led the team spiritually, but also amassed alot of points. Jim, Mike, and John are SHOWN ABOVE doing the things they are most noted for. Jim, in throwing the shot; Mike in running the 440 and 220; and John in throwing the discus. IN THE PICTURES BELOW, these clowns are SHOWN doing something they are not quite so well known for. The caption ABOVE EACH PICTURED athlete will explain what they're doing. Here we see Jim breaking the school throwing record This is a shot of John as he warms up with a throw of 23 feet 4 before compedon by singing the open- inches. ing Une of tj,e Star Spangled Ban- _________________________ net . 69 Swing Choir Swing Band SWING CHOIR-LEFT TO RIGHT-(STARTING AT THE FRONT) C. And now the event everyone had been waiting for, the game between the Sutherland Tigers and the Primghar Bulldogs. After four quarte of play, the Tigers came up as victo with a score of 14 to 12. To help celebrate after the game, the student council obtained a rock band to play lor the Homecoming Dance. This band consisted of Dave Hill, Steve Samuelson, Lee Henderson, and Jim Kunns. The kids really enjoyed the band, and it was a fine conclusion to a perfect Homecoming Day. The entire week of October 8th, 1976 had been a very busy one for alot of people. Homecoming pins were being sold, locke were being decorated, floats were being constructed, and most importantly the football team was getting fired up on the practice field. But at last, the magic day arrived, even though it was slightly cold and windy. The festivities got started in the gym with the crowning of Queen Londa Dau and King Jon Sickelka as homecoming royalty. After that a pep rally with rousing cheers and pep speeches took place. Then the fun began. Complete with firetrucks, convertibles, grade schoole , clowns, and the S.H.S. Marching Band, the Homecoming parade got undeway, After romping around the streets of Sutherland a few hundred times (or it seemed), this happy yet tired bunch of Tigers went home to rest for the Big Game that night. Then at 7:30, as the crowd started to fire up again with the help of the cheerleadere, the band began the Crownbearers Shawn Haht Chris Sweeney 89 1976 Homecoming Royalty Jeff Pat John Sue Mike Tam Kent Joni The Junior Class of Sutherland High School presented Stairway to Heaven, Saturday evening April 13, 1977. The evening started out with a delicious meal of turkey, dres- sing, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, assorted salads, relish tray, coffee, milk, and for dessert there was a slice of angel food cake topped with a strawberry sauce and whipped cream. Our sophomore waitresses and waiters were Denise Dau, LynnGiese, Liz Flinders, Mark Weaver, Chuck Van- Overbeke, Rick Sickelka. The welcoming was made by the Junior Class President Russ Steele for the 1976-77 Prom. It was acknowledged by the Senior Class Presi- dent Mike Tewes. Have happiness always Keep in touch Who am I kidding We'll never meet much For you'll be busy And me, I guess, just the same Struggling to make a living or achieving great fame. But the memories of high school I'll strive not to forget The classmates and teachers the joys and regrets. I wonder if there's a word for the way I feel inside an empty feeling deep down and tears clouding my eyes. How can I leave While owing an unpayable sum to the teachers who've prepared me for the problems yet to come. So I bid you farewell as I better my rank I leave you with a handshake and my humblest thanks. To the graduating Class of 1977. . . Congratulations. 112
