Mr. Frolkey has taught in our school system for the past eight years as a science teacher. He is well known in our school for his jokes, his wise sayings, and most of all, his general knowledge of things. As a science teacher, he has taught Biology to Sophomores, (or any upperclassman who hasn't had it already), Chemistry to Juniors (or anyone), and Physics to Seniors. He also has an additional class to these main three, which is Physical Science. On his spare time, he helps students with whatever problem they have. He is one of the Sophomore sponsors, and also films all the basketball games, and football games. Mr. Frolkey enjoys working at the F and F Drive-In, cruising down the rivers in his self-made boat, and singing in the Methodist choir. A ScftJIORS CLftSs of 1970 5 THE 1970 S.H.S. Three awards are given each year to certain Senior Class members. This year, Principal Leon Stanford pre- sented the Sutherland Teachers' Association Scholarship of $400 to Paula Farquhar. Sandy Nelson received the $100 local Womans' Club Scholarship. The Bar Associ- ation Citizenship Award was given to Charles Bandholz, the senior student who best exemplified those qualities of leadership and responsible citizenship. The faculty and administration of the Sutherland Community School System are proud of all these young people in the Class of 1970, tomorrow's future citizens. OFFICERS President--Mike Rehder Vice-President--John Nitz Sec.-Treas. and Representative-at-large--Paula Adams The Student Council is composed of seven members and one ad- visor, Mr. Stanford. Members included in the organization are the president and representative of each class, a representative-at-large and the Student Council President. The activities of this group are varied. This year the Student Coun- cil again sponsored the Homecoming Dance by selling magazines and selling pins to promote the school spirit. At Christmas, the council presented a movie to the student body. The final activity of the Student Council was presented May 14, 1970. This was Senior Send- Off Day. The program opened with the reading of the class history and the class prophecies. The Gideon Society played and humorous skits were presented. The student body danced to the music of the Gideon Society (local group) until school was dismissed. 18 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY On May 4, 1970, six new members were initiated into the Sutherland chapter of the National Honor So- ciety. They are Sheryl Dau, Paul Farquhar, Tim Menke, Wanda Frolkey, John Nitz, and John Mugge. All mem- bers are selected by the high school faculty according to their qualities of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. The Honor Society consists of a maximum of fifteen percent seniors, ten percent juniors, and five per- cent sophomores. These people must have a 90 percent or above average. The initiation ceremony takes place in the afternoon with each initiate's parents attending. Following the ceremonies, a reception is held for the new members, their parents, and the faculty. TTie members of the Annual Staff are Editor--Sheryl Dau, Assistant editors--Ladonna Johannsen and Paula Farquhar, Artists--Theresa Havlik and Brian Steele, Photographer--Tom Cieser, and Junior Staff Members--Carol Stamer, Linda Kas, and Vicki Harris. Working on the Annual demands many long and frustrating hours. Much planning is done before any actual work is completed. Bunt- rock-Salie comes three times during the year to take pictures. The pages are then drawn up and typed on final carbon copies. To finance the cost, members of the Senior class go to the businesses in town and neighboring towns to sell advertisements in the spring. The work is finally completed on the annual the first of June and sent into the American Yearbook Company. Close to 200 copies will be delivered to students next fall. Pages drawn by Staff Artist Theresa Havlik are page numbers 5, 15, 17, and 53. Pages drawn by Staff Artist Brian Steele include the yearbook covers and page numbers 1, 67, and 75. 20 TIGER ECHO STAFF FIRST ROW: D. Virgil, T. Havlik, S. Dau, C. Jalas, R. Ray (editor), L. The Utter-Club carries on many activities during the school year. Memberehip in the club is achieved by winning a major award in either football, basketball, track, or baseball. By sponsoring a car wash and through a slave auction, money was earned to buy a football scoreboard and other athletic equipment for the school. Spirited auctioneering led to high prices paid for four hours of slave labor by the local athletes. Jobs for these unfortunate members ranged from raking lawns to various unpleasant tasks. Of course, many fathers were bid-up quite a bit on the price they had to pay in order to obtain the services of their son. DIFFERENT FACES AT INITIATION' TIGERETTES FIRST ROW: C. Foley. When the weather permits, they are outside. We have several young boys out for track this year and we hope they have gained the experience they will need to win all their track meets next year. There were eighteen track boys that received letters for track. They are as follows: Seniors: Paul Farquhar, John Hoeppner; Juniors: Doug Hicks, John Nitz, Russ Hill, Steve Selk, Kim Heckert; Sophomores: Dan Schultz, Ron Negus, Jerry Petersen, Dave Rehder, Dwight Sickelka, Brian Lindstrom, (Joel Weber and Mike Schueder-- Managers); Freshmen: Larry Dau, Mark Rehder, Roger Daum. ADMINISTRATION SCHOOL BOARD Superintendent James Rhode Li V V'«1 V M h LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. James Rhode, Mr. Leslie Templer, Mr. Richard Hicks, Mr. Irvin Struve, Mr. R. S. McCormack, and Mr. Burdette Faust. The .local school board of the Sutherland Community School District are concerned citizens who have con- sented to serve an important function for the community. In a job which is often open to criticism, these men have developed an educational system which has provided an excellent opportunity for the growth of its young citizens, both mentally and morally. Nearly 90 per cent of the Sutherland's graduating class will go on to some type of advanced training. To show its appreciation of the service rendered the school, the yearbook staff presents each member of the school board with a free copy of THE DUKE. To continue better public relations, local teachers conduct evening classes for the people of the local com- munity. Each spring, the Sutherland Teacher's Association grants a $400 scholarship to a senior student who is going to enter the teaching profession. The money for this award is collected through the dues assessed each teacher. Thus, the teachers of the Sutherland Community School System are greatly contributing to the social and educational success of each Sutherland student. Not only are the administration and the faculty important to a successful school system, but the rest of the sc ool staff is equally important. Without the assistance of the school custodians, secretaries, cooks, and bus rivers, the school would not be able to function. These people should be sincerely thanked for the long hours and hard work they give to their jobs. 68 Mr. Leon Stanford High School Principal Mr. Willie O.
