Because of the reorganization the freshmen became part of the junior high. The students worked hard in their athletic, music, and dramatic organizations during the year. Upon promotion to the high school these students engaged in many new activities. During the course of the sophomore year they raked the park and were in charge of the coat check at the various events. Their aim was to earn money for the prom the following year. As juniors all thoughts were directed to a successful prom. In order to earn more money they volunteered for several jobs. They chose Oriental Gardens for their theme. It was beautifully portrayed. The final year of this class was highlighted by a three crown trophy earned by the athletic department for foot- ball, basketball, and track. Also the concert band received a I rating at the state music contest and the mixed chorus received a II rating. The increase in interest in journalism made it especially successful. The speech de- partment represented Sutherland at both the district and state contest. Because of the students initiative and firm foundation of the underclassmen the year of 1964-65 proved to be very rewarding and a lasting memory in the minds of the members of the senior class. Editor Mary Arrington Journalism at Sutherland Journalism is an ever increasing phase at the Sutherland High School. This year the newspaper publications were outstanding. One of the staff's projects was to include everyone's name in the high school at least once in the paper. They also covered all the organizations. For the last nine weeks the new editor, Marlene Fiddelke, assumed her duties. In February part of the annual staff sold ads. They sold fifty-two ads and received thirteen donations. This support from the community surely helped. The annual was finally completed in the first part of May. Special thanks to Diane Mathern who did nearly all of the typing for the annual. Outstanding members of both of these groups comprise the Quill and Scroll. This is an honorary organization for these students. During the year six new members were received into the organization. They were Marlene Fiddelke, Linda Stiemke, Susan Hoeppner, Linda Friedrichsen, Dany Castor, and Diane Mathern. 77 STUDENT COUNCIL FIRST ROW: President--T. Selk, Secretary-Treasurer--S. Adams, D. Many preparations are necessary for a successful Homecoming. Homecoming . . . 1965 On the morning of October 2 few textbooks were opened because of the anticipation of the coming events. The afternoon was highlighted by the spirited pep meeting, the crowning of Reva Hagen and Marvin Solko as king and queen, and the lovely parade. There was an added touch of perfection as Suther- land walloped Primghar 34-0. The evening was con- cluded by the traditional Homecoming Dance. Aurelia The football team closed their season with an undefeated record and also earned the title of champs of the Sioux Valley Conference. With the close of the football season came several changes. As far as the athletic department the Tigers now turned their thoughts to the future success of the basketball team. Also the conversation in the halls changed from Who made that touchdown in the game last Friday night? to ''Boy, I can hardly wait till the basketball game at Paullina! Many students do not realize that the music department was undergoing a change, too. At the last football game the band students checked in their uniforms and left the memories of rain drenched hair and muddy shoes behind. They then looked forward to the preparation of the concert band. Sutherland Vs. Paullina Concert Band MERRY CHRISTMAS With exams, schoolwork, and extracurricular activities we found ourselves involved in a routine of daily responsibilities. However, as the end of the year approached everyone looked forward to Christ- mas vacation. This past year the student council planned a very fine program. It consisted of games for all, singing Christmas carols, and treats given by the faculty. 91 At 8:00 P.M. on October 13, 1964 the senior class play began. The setting, a courtroom, was vividly portrayed by all members of the cast. The jury was selected from the audience. In the final moments the defendant was de- clared innocent. A traditional Hawaiian welcome by the waitresses. The night of March 27, 1965 for which juniors and seniors anxiously await finally arrived. One could see a whirl of beautiful party dresses and dark suits. This evening all the juniors and seniors of Sutherland High School became passengers on a Hawaiian Cruise. To enter this paradise each student walked down the gang plank of a boat and was greeted by Hawaiian girls. At this time each passenger received their traditional flower necklace, the lei. After being served a delicious meal catered by L'Trio and served by the sophomore class, the program began. The last nine weeks of school became busier and busier. The halls were filled with hurdles for track practice and the rooms were occupied with music ensembles preparing for contest. Mr. Hoyne ran frantically from room to room advising the students about tone and notes, while Mr. Becker encouraged the boys to run faster and jump higher. Oh, those hectic days! 96 The woodwind trio practicing for contest. Well—they did most of the time! AT SUTHERLAND The annual staff works on THE DUKE. Marlene Fiddelke, editor, writes an editorial for The Tiger Echo. Besides track, small and large group contest, meetings of the various organizations, and school work students were also busy preparing the annual and newspaper. The journalism department should be remembered for the many hours spent in preparing publications which provide enjoyment for the student body. Every year the National Honor Society inducts new members into their organization. The six new members were chosen by their character, scholarship, leadership, and service. They were Cheryl Weale, Steve Farquhar, Char- lotte Bandholz, Sheryl Adams, Joel Orthmann, and Susan Haye. After an impressive ceremony in the gym a tea was held in honor of the new members. 97 The new members listen to the qualifications of the Honor Society. The pledge is recited.
