The reason firm, the temperate will. Endurance, foresight, strength and skill A perfect man, nobly planned. To win, to comfort, and command; And yet a spirit still, and bright With something of an angelic light. Mr. Kenneth Hoyne We the senior class of 1961 dedicate this annual to Mr. Hoyne. Through this dedication we would like to express appreciation for all the time and effort he has contributed to our education. He has not only helped us with our academic work and extra curricular activities for these last six years, but he has also served as a counselor and a friend. Now, thirteen years later this class has graduated into an even more bewildering world, maybe not quite so bashful but still uncertain of what lies ahead. Of the 33 original members of our class instructed by Mrs. Pierce, 1% continued together to graduate in the class of 1961. They were Gerald Lange, Judd Huffman Dennis Jebsen,Kenneth Nelson, Marvin Guthridge, Terry Miles, Mary Jo Kosta, Carolyn Gottscb, Judy Struve, Prank Fogelman, Mary Metz, Arlys Cooper, Linda Miller, Marlene Nelson, and Daryl Einerwold.Eighteen other members--Johnnie Burgraff, Harold Rahbauch, Rene Ziemen, Donna Henry, Wlllamae Nagel, Allen Beatty, Marilyn Lyons, Kathy Youde, Margorie Raper, Ellen Hargus, Judy Ebert, Merlyn Munson, Jimmy Morris, Ronnie Olson, Robert Jalas, Dennis Rowse, Herman Kamraat, and Donna Larson left our class before we completed our thirteen years of school. In first grade as our instructor, Mrs. Pierce, began teaching us our A,B,C's, we had six new pupils to study with us. They were LeRoy Rohde, Eleanor Blom, Kenneth Kummerfeld, Jerry Kruse, Mike Steuermann, and Mike Parnell. Donna Larson was not with us in first grade. In second grade, four new pupils joined us. They were Gordon Peterson, Sharon Meyer, Prank Parket, and Karen King. Kathy Youde, Herman Kamradt, and Mike Parnell made new friends in other schools. As our third grade teacher Mrs. Larson, advanced us farther in pur work we were joined by Darlene Swenson, Juanita Marnell, and Darrell Litka.Jerry Kruse and Frank Parket moved to new communities during this time. Because of the size of our fourth grade class,it was necessary to have two teachers—Kiss Goodrich and Miss Rush. Vernon Riedemann became a new member of our class while Harry Rahbusch, Rene Ziemen, and Margorie Raper were no longer with us. In fifth grade with Miss Lynch as our instructor,we added five new pupils to our class—Larry Steele, Danny Rogness, Donly Trogen, Nancy Gieser, and Dennis Gano, and lost four classmates--Gordon Peterson, Ellen Hargus, Juanita Marnell, and Judd Huffman. Judd Huffman returned to study with us later in school. In sixth grade we again had two teachers—Miss Nelson and Miss Reuter. Phillip Steele, Marvin Mangels, Allen Steinbeck, Steve Rohwer, Bill Frerk, Keith Van Horne,Audrey DeBoom, and Dorothy Barry became our new classmates while Johnnie Burgraff, Ronnie Olson, and Donna Henry left to attend other schools. As a new and exciting life opened to us during Junior High, Karen Minus and LeRoy Lapagard came to study with us. Marilyn Lyons, Allen Steinbeck, and Dennis Rowse left to attend seventh grade else- where . John Leonard joined our eighth grade class and Merlyn Munson, Danny Rogness, Lonly Trogen, Karen Minus, Dennis Oano, and LeRoy Lapagard found new classmates in other schools. During our freshman year, while we were experiencing our first step into high school, five new pupils joined us from the Gaza area. They were Carolyn Sickelka, Cherly Craig,, Judd Huffman, Robert Virgil, and Marlin Johann3en. Steve Rohwer, Keith Van Horne, and Marvin Mangels were not with us during this year. During our sophomore year,we gained two new pupils,Jan HeLfner and Larry Ewoldt. Donna Sierk also joined us later in this year. Mike Hines and Dennes Draper became our new classmates in our junior year. Ruth Leget joined us late in our junior year. Allen Beatty, Vernon Riedemann, Marlin Johannsen, Willamae Nagel, Jan Heifner, Pam Taylor, and Darlene Swenson' no longer attended high school at Sutherland. During our senior year as we found we were doing many things for the last time. Bob Kelly became one of our classmates. Vernon Austin and Larry Shuck were also with us briefly. Jimmy Morris, Nancy Gieser,Bob Jalas, and Judy Ebert no longer attened Sutherland High School. During our seemingly brief thirteen years in school we have had many rewarding experiences, made many lifetime friends, and enjoyed good times together. Now, as we leave these years behind, we know our thoughts will linger often on our past school days as we begin new lives for ourselves . 961 SENIOR CLASS WILL Know all men by these presents, and to all whom these presents may concern be it known that we, the Senior Class of 1961 of Sutherland High School in the city of Sutherland and the state of Iowa, being of sound mind and realizing that this is the last meeting of our class, do make and declare this our last will and testament.
