A SENIOR TRIP On September 29, 1955 the Senior Class accompanied by Mr. Hardt went to Storm Lake to have their graduation pictures taken. During the afternoon, they visited the Buena Vista College and KAYL Radio Station. Here they were interviewed on a tape recorder. Everyone en- joyed the trip. +2227 E 5 Y Q 1 4 ,X SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Way back in the year 1952, we arrived on the scene at Sutherland High School. We started the year with twenty-five members. For our class officers we chose Roger Haydter as President, Elaine Steinbeck as Vice- President, Karen Lenhart as Secretary, and Marlene Frerk as our Treasurer. During the first semester we lost Beverly Peterson, Donald Wohlert, Violet Krager and Rose Tombola. We were initiated by the Sophomores and given a roller skating party. Our class sponser was Mr. Wickstrom. Our Sophomore year we not to initiate the Freshman. This was a lot more fun for us than it was the year before. For our class officers we chose Jack Cooper as President, Loren Zoet aaVice-President, Myrna Martin as Sec- retary, and Karen Lenhart as Treasurer. Our sponser wasMr. Fernau. During Ehls year we lost Jim Miller and Ronnie Plopper and added one more, Mary yman e For our class officers our Junior year, we elected Elaine Steinbeck as President, Marlene Frerk as Vice-President, Karen Lenhart as Secretary, and Margie Orthmann as Treasurer. This year we worked hard to give the Seniors the usual Junior-Senior Banquet on April 23. The theme was 'Moonlight and Roses'. We sold mazagines as a means of making money. Lots of work, but it was fun. We ordered our class rings h1December and received them when school started again in the fall. We presented WDesperate Ambrosen, a comedy in three acts, as our Junior Play. It was a real success! we lost Allyn Davis, Dwain Salzkorn, Mary Lyman, and Loren Zoet before the year was up. Marilyn Elze joined us the last semester. Our sponsers were Miss Camery and Miss Halbach. During our Senior year, we continued to mdo thingsn for Dear Old Suther- land High. We started the year with fourteen members as Roper Haydter and Elaine Steinbeck moved during the summer. For our class officers we elect- ed Milowe Jungjohann as President, Marqie Orthmann as Vice-President, Marlene Frerk as Secretary, and Bonnie Kleine as Treasurer. Our class sponsor was Mr. Robinson. For our Senior Play, we used mThe Groom said, Noi' This was even a bigqer hit than our Junior Class Play. In the spring came Wskip Layw. Oh, what a day! Hb wmre also pretty lucky in winning on two Homecoming floats. One of our boys helped play a major role on the football, basketball, and track teams for the past four years and the others for one or two years. One of the cheerleaders from the Senior class was represented for three years and the others for one or two years. we also excelled in dramatics. Besides presenting two plays, some of the Seniors took part in Declam contests. We also seemed outstanding in band and vocal activities. And now, as Commencement Night gets nearer and we are about to take our final step, we would like to say Good-byen to Sutherland High School and all its friends and teachers. rn ,J x Xfiz VN fu x - , 'fe' W 1. ,I A v 'N 1-iff' 2 Q 5 ,N W -X 1 uf fa Q. 1 x Strangely enough we look ahead two years to 1958. The first member of the class it falls upon is a girl, Marlene Frerk, who we find happily married to Jim Olhausen. They are now living in Los Angles where Jim is kept busy in his gas station for it takes a large income to raise nine children In the same city we find Mrs. Bill Burns, the former Bonnie Kleine. They now own the B A B Cafe in Los Angles and Bill is also running com- petition with the Olhausen Service Station. Jungjohann turns the apparatus to Denver, Col- orado. He is startled to see himself running the 'Gold Nuggetn night club. His management of Neebles Danceland five years ago brought him great fame in this type of work. They aim the machine towards the East. In New York we find Eleanor Olson quite busy for she is now editor of the New York Daily Times. While in New York the machine spots Madison Square Garden where we see the Ringling Brothers Circus perform- ing. Main feature of the circus is Bozo the clown the former Gary Jennings, who is said to be kept quite busy making his yearly tours. In Indiana we find Wayne Ewoldt and his wife, the former Myrna Martin, running the Indianapolis Speedway. As Jungjohann slowly swings the time viewer towards Corpus Cristi, Texas, we find Donna Wohlert who has joined the Wacs and is now a pri- vate secretary to General Sid Gustufuson. We hear Donna likes her work real well. The apparatus is focused back to California where we find George Regennitter now playing guard for the All Stars. We wish you the best of luck George in your football career. Focusing the machine closer to home we find that Marilyn Elze has established her old maids homo and is finding business quite prosperous. We also spot Mrs. Russell Steinbeck, the former Margie Orthmann, out west of Sutherland where she is happily chasing her chickens on their little acreage. Mr. McCurdy switches off the machine and turns to his partner and says, nWell, Jungjohann, it looks like most of your classmates have done some great th1ngs.n !::::x. SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY ,KH ? SENIOR CLASS WILL Ladies and Gentlemen: I have the pleasure to appear before you for the purpose of pres enting the will of the Senior Class of 1956 of Sutherland High School When we were assigned the task of preparing a class will, we found that there was little or nothing in the possession of our class which would be worth while to offer to anyone. There are, however, some items of high sentimental value which on this occasion we would like to designate that they go to certain people who have had some- thing to do with our public school affairs. With all this in mind we have adopted the following as our last will and testament. KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, and to all who these presents may concern be it known that we, the Senior Class of n56' of Suther- land High School in the city of Sutherland and the State of Iowa, be- ing of sound mind and realizing that this is the last meeting of our class do make and declare this our last will and testament. There were 23 boys reporting for practice, A of which were re- turning lettermen. The Sutherland Tigers fell prey to the Kingsley squad. Due to inexperience and early season jitters, we went down in a ae-o defeat. The Kingsley offense had little trouble in maneuvering against the Tigers and could break through the Tigers defense at will. The conference schedule was opened on September 16 when the Tigers went to Primghar to meet the strong Bulldogs. Despite their L6-O loss to the defending Sioux Valley champions, the Sutherland spirit was high. One week later the Hartley Hawks met the Suther- land Tigers which proved to be one of the best perfor- mances of the season. The locals bowed to a 27-0 de- feat at the hands of the Hartley Hawks. The visitors were holding a 13-O lead at the halftime and the Tigers were unable to muster the necessary drive to get them to pay territory. On September 30 the Tigers showed some real fight and drive with Sanborn on our home field, despite the lopsided score of 38-l2. Sanborn held the edge through- out the first half with the Tigers making costly defen- sive errors. The Sutherland Tigers met the Milford Pioneers October 7 to meet another downfall of 29-O. The fight was great but we were lacking spirit. The following week the Tigers journeyed to Alta to meet the Alta Powerhouse. Playing the best game of the season, the Tigers bowed to the Alta Cyclones to the tune of 21-6, but the game was an interesting one throughout. The Paullina October 21 to meet the Tigers. Despite the loss of the Homecoming was pronounced a success. Panthers journeyed to Sutherland on game L5-19, the ur crew showed a fighting spriit, and their defensive playing showed much improvement over previous games. The Tigers concluded their schedule October 28, when they battled the Aurelia Bulldogs on Aurelia's gridiron. The defensive lapse in the second period roved costly for the locals and brought the score to a loss of b9-15. ..gllD X' sf A igzgwigcgf 'L r. Homecoming On October 23, 1955, the Sutherland High School student body and faculty turned out in full force to hold once again the annual S. H. S. Homecoming activities. To begin the festivities a bonfire was held Thursday evening. The program included speeches by Mr. Rogness, Jim Ahrens, Eleanor Olson, Mr. Christensen, and Marilyn Geuther. The evening was concluded by yells from the cheerleaders and singing the school song. Friday afternoon at one o'clock started atthe high school auditorium given by Don Waggener, Marvin Sump, the pep rally with speeches Diane Lohff, Chuck Meyer, Mr. Christensen, Mr. Hughes, and Sweeney, and Janice Scheoning. The Queen, Mary King, George Regennitter, were announced at the meeting and also the four attendents, Margie Orth- mann, Bonnie Kleine, Marilyn Elze, and Marlene Frerk. The Homecoming parade started at 1:30 including the band, football players, Queen and attendents, floats, and the grade students riding their bikes. At 7:hS the parade appeared on the football field. The Senior float won first place, Sophomores second place, and Freshmen third place. The King, Queen, and attendents were presented by Mr. Robinson and were crowned by last years King and Queen, Russell Steinbeck and Janet Jensen. The crown bearers were Susan Haye and Noel Lange. Our opponent for the night was Paullina. They made a touchdown in the first few minutes, but our boys fought to their best ability and scored three touchdowns during the game. Although we lost the game, we felt we had done our best and kept up the great Tiger spirit. After the game Bill Redmond and his band played for the dance in the beautifully decorated gym. The Queen was presented with a dozen roses by Mr. Rogness, and then our festivities continued. ...,. X THE GCDAL el Fourth Row Third Row: Second Row: First Row: X., F7 f in Jax 1 Y lg .L :bw .Q J.
