King Neptune The Class of 5U presented their banquet on May 9, 1953 The theme was Undersea Rhapsody. The gym was decorated with blue and green streamers form- ing the surface of the sea. Colorful fish and other under- sea creatures were scattered around throughout the decora- tions. These fish were drawn and painted by members of the class• A sunken treasure chest was placed along the east wall. Gold fishnets and sea shells added to the striking effect. The center of the decorations was a complete under sea scene at one end of the gym. Coral reefs and other growths were arranged around a rock formation. White fish nets and seaweed completed the theme. Kingsley won on scoring passes from Higgenbottom to Roepke. Sutherland s tally came on a two yard plunge by Rog Haydter. Sutherland was on the Kingsley 8 yard stripe with first and ten late in the fourth quarter, but a clipping penalty nullified a possible touch- down. The game ended with Kingsley 12, Sutherland 7. In the first conference game wh ch was v ith Aurelia, the Tigers jumped into an early lead on a 27 yard pass from Olhausen to V oolston. Aurelia came back strong to push across 19 points before the half ended. The second half was scoreless with neither team threatening. A week later the Tigers lost their second conf- rence game to Prlmghar by a score of 20-0. As the first half came to an end Prlmghar led 6-0. The Tiger defense held Prlmghar in check most of the time. In the second half Prlmghar came back to score once in each of the remainin' 1; periods. The undefeated Hartley Hawks were met by a hard charging Sutherland line, but finally managed to pull out a 15-0 vic- tory over the Tigers. A sustained drive by the Timers was halted deep in Hartley territory as the first half came to an end, with Hartley leading 7-0. In the final half Hartley pushed across a touchdown on a short plunge by Boetel and succeeded in catching Jim Olhausen in the end zone for a safety. The Sutherland Tigers inspired by a large Homecoming crowd, rolled over Sanborn for a 13-0 victory. The Sutherland touchdowns were pushed over in q.'ick succession and a pass added the extra point. The Tigers held the Bull- dogs to a total of 15 yards. The Tigers journeyed to Milford to play at the Dioneer Homecoming in a downpour that lasted the entire length of the game, ' hen the first half ended the Tigers were ahead 7-0, as a result of a long pass to Woolston and a series of line plunges. Neither team scored in the third period. In the fourth period a Milford back was caught in the end zone for a safety. Final score, 9-0. The Tigers walked off with a third consecutive conference victory of the season when they dropped the Alta Cyclones 12-7. The Tigers scored two touchdowns in the first half on plunges by Drefke and Sweeney. Alta s only touchdown was made on an accidental pass from Karen Johnson to Bob Rndersbe. A pass from Johnson to Endersbe accounted for the extra point. The Sutherland Tigers gained a tie with the Paullina Pan- thers to run their unbeaten string to fo r games. The aullina touchdown cane after Melles picked up a Salz om fumble and ran to the Tigers 20 yard line. Bill Hatfield scored from the ten yard stripe four plays later. Bill Louscher tried the middle of the line for the extra point but was unsuccessful. A pass from Swe ney to Woolston re- sulted in a Tiger touchdown. Kill missed the extra point bv inches as the second half ended. The Tigers were defeated by Sioux Rapids 13-0 in their last game. The Tigers outplayed their opponents the first half, threatening twice, but unable to score either time. At the half, Sioux Rapids received and went all the way for a touchdown, without iving up the ball. Late in the fourth quarter they scored another touchdown after a penalty put then on the two yard line. Band Junior Float Prize-winning Sophomore Float More Keros Royalty Royalty Newstaff Float Freshman Float Jr. High Float S.H.S. HOMECOMING The Homecoming festivities started slowly. Everyone was thinking of ideas for their floats and wondering who the King and Queen would be. The excitement increased as floats were decided on and work started. On Monday morning before the game, an an- nouncement was made naming the ten Seniors who were candidates for King and Queen. On Thursday night. Homecoming officially started with the bon- fire. After pep talks by Rich Hill, Coach Wickstrom and Gayle Jennings, the football boys staged the traditional murder scene, by dumping the Sanborn dummy on the bonfire. The pepband was on hand to play some lively marches and the school song. On Friday morning classes were held as usual but there was little interest in studies. Everyone was thinking about Home- coming. After dinner the band practiced, the students finished decorating the floats, and everyone was ready for the parade. The pep meeting was held at 2:30 in the high school auditorium. The alumni speakers were Winifred Jones and John Ginger. Pep talks were also given by Coach Wickstrom, Jerry Jones, a member of the squad, and Mr. Rogness. About 3:15, the parade formed in front of the school house. Led by the band, the parade consisted of the Queen and her attend- ants, the football boys and the cheerleaders, the floats, and the grade school pupils and their decorated bicycles and floats. At the downtown intersection, the band formed a large circle and the cheerleaders did some yells. At 7:30 the floats paraded around the football field. The ratings were announced with the Sophomore float, Vinging to Vic- tory receiving first; the Senior Float, Sailing to Victory taking second; and the Junior Float, Our Boys Will Shine winning third place. After the floats left the field, the band led the Queen's car around the field. In front of the Sutherland bleachers, the band divided to form an honor guard as the King, Dick Burgeson, es- corted his Queen, Verlene Kolln to Mr. Robinson, the High-School principal, who presented them to Mr. Flinders, the President of the School Board. Mr. Flinders then took the crowns from the crown bearers, Steve Wilson and Annette Davis, and crowned Dick and Verlene King and Queen of Homecoming. Attendants to the Royal couple were Alice Phillips and Richard Hill, Euena Jebsen and Ronald Woolston, Gayle Jenning3 and Don Moding, and Dianne Metz and Jerry Jones. The most important event in Homecoming, to many, was our de- feat of Sanborn, 13-0. The two touchdowns were made in the se- cond period. A greatly improved Tiger team held the Sanborn Bulldogs to almost no net gain. The winning of the game was con- sidered to be the highlight of the 1953 Homecoming activities. After the game, the Homecoming dance was held in the gymna- sium. The names of the football players and their numbers on or- ange jerseys were arranged on the east wall around a big foot- ball. The four cheerleaders were also represented by four girls in orange and black outfits. Music was furnished by Pete's Swing Band of Marcus. As the dance ended, everyone agreed that the 1953 Homecoming had been the happiest and most successful ever. Homecoming King - Queen VERLENE KOLLN RICHARD BURGESON Fourth Row-L. Olhausen, ivi.
