CLASS 0F 1952 PRESENTS THE E CALUMET SUSOUEHANNOCH, GLEN Roca, PA. Ro. History of Consolidation The subject of consolidation had been an unimportant topic in small conversation for about ten years, Gradually it grew and became a subject for serious consideration. At the request of Mr. Harvey Swartz, the board members of the seven Southern York County School Districts convened in the spring of 1946 at Glen Rock to discuss the problem. The districts concerned were these seven: Codorus Township, Glen Rock, New Freedom, Railroad, Stewartstown, and Shrewsbury boroughs, and Shrewsbury Township. However Stewartstown felt that she was attached to the southeastern section of the county and consequently resigned from our group. Officers were elected for a four year term. Often their meetings began early in the evening and continued till early in the morning. Every topic was thoroughly debated before any action was taken. This project was an entirely new kind of venture. Never before was this type jointure used in this state. There was no precedent example to follow. Prodeedures were eagerly observed by school districts in ours and other states and by our State Department of Education. Mr. Harry W. Shank, Assistant County Superintendent of Schools, has given his valuable assistance in helping forward this school. Following are some major decisions: --In 1950 it was agreed to operate grades 1 to I2 jointly instead of 7 to I2 as was previously planned. --Present site was chosen primarily because of it's beauty and it's central location of student population. The grounds were purchased from Mr. T. C. Coleman, Mr. Samuel Sweitzer, Mr. Harry Warner and Mr. William Ziegler. --Decided upon financing of building by having each district contribute on the bases of it's assessed valuation. --Concluded that the four school structures QCodorus Township Glen Rock, New Freedom, and Shrewsbury High School buildingsj were to house the first six grades. --All expenses other than capital outlay were to be pro-rated to districts on the basis of daily school membership of the students from esch district. --Engaged Buchart Engineering Co. to draw up plans for the building. --All activities were speeded up in 1950 and new committees were appointed. --Spencer Wareheim as Joint Board Attorney and Saul, Hewing, and Saul as bond counsel were engaged. --Decided to form a Municipal Authority which was selected by the Boards of Supervisors of the Townships and the Borough Councils of the four Boroughs. --Opened bids for construction on September 7, 1950 and accepted following: General Construction, I. Reindollar and Song Heating Contractor, John L. Thomasg Plumbing Contractor, C. C. Kothcampand Song Electrical Contractor, Swam Electric Co. Inc.:We1l-digging Contractor, A. C. Rider. --On July 1, 1952 the districts went into joint operation. --The teaching staff was picked in the Spring of 1951. ' Carl Caskey --The transportation route was set up. --Mrs. Dorothy Caskey was given the contract which called for running six buses. --In November 1951 three more buses were added to the transportation system. --Bids were opened for the furnishings and equipment and in July contracts were awarded to about 30 different companies. --School commenced September IO, 1951. On February 18, 1952, Junior and Senior High moved into the new Susuqhennock building. All members of the six Boards involvedin this jointure from it's beginning are listed below, with the names of the present members preceded by an asterisk. PJ CODORUS ' William L. Bensel ' C. L. After many argumentative discussions they arrived at determining decisions. We are proud of our school and hope the oncoming students will appreciate their school and especially the work of the board of education. We feel sure the faculty, as well as parents appreciate the many difficulties faced and solved by our school board members in order to open this wonderful school . 6 It has been a great privilege and a rare thrill to participate in the development of our present proiect. In that development, three tasks confronted us. First was the framing of agreements to insure efficient operation and an equitable distribution of the costs involved, as well as the securing of popular support. Next came the actual planning and con- struction ofthe new building. Because of its size and purpose, this took considerable time and thought, and we can all take pride in the result. A third task remains, the welding of school boards, teachers, student body, and the public into an harmonious group whose sole purpose is the betterment of our area through more and better educational facil- ities, A prophet once said, Where there is no vision, the people perish. Surely our system stands as a monument to the vision of all who have worked and strived for its realization. CHXEVS We are living in a civilization that is undergoing rapid change. Life tomorrow will be essentially different from that of today. The things we put into life are what make it worth living. High Schools are improving with each decade ond educational advantages are now the best man has known. With these advantages goes responsibility. Upon the youth of today, rests the responsibility of taking up the task and carrying cililization to higher levels. ln this obligation the graduates of Susquehannock High must not fail . SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We, the class of I952, entered Susquehannock as seniors. Septemoer IO, I95I was the day which marked the Jeginning of our last year of high school . At this date there were 69 seniors. The Susquehannock Seniors began their school days in three different schools: Glen Rock, New Freedom, and Codorus. Each student with different opinions, different environment, emerged with his fellow classrnen and comsined commendably as Susquehannock Seniors. A reunion was held at Hershey Park prior to the sessions in School. This was to better acquaint us with one another. The first social event for us was a HalIowe'en Party, Octooer 25, I95I . Refreshments were: pumpkin pie, potato chips, and HalIowe'en designed candy, plus sweet cider. Games were played and prizes awarded for those constumed, A Holiday Hop was next on the social calendar. This was an informal holiday dance on December 28, l95I . Students and Alumni responded to make the dance a success. As graduation time nears and is past, we seniors will oe grateful to have been a part of Susquehannock High School. Z3 TALLEST I 4. . After years ofplanning, Codorus, New Freedom, and Glen Rock schools were united and our Junior Class is now the outgrowth of this unification. lt took us a few days to become accustomed to this new experience in our lives. Some cf us didn't care for such a large school and were always afraid that we were going to the wrorg classes. A few weeks after we got used tothe schedule, we elected class officers and new we really vverea class. Earl Sprenkle was elected president, HaroldMasenheimer, vice-president, Beulah Krebs, secretary, Allan Holland, treasurer, and Jane Anderson, historian. Octooer was a busy month. We chose our class colors, which were royal blue and white, were measured for our iackets, selected our rings, and ofcourse we had a Hallowe'er, party. Everyone that came had a good time, including the spooks and goblins. During the Thanksgiving holidays most of us were sporting flashy blue ana .vhite iackets, If not, we were wearing class sweaters or waiting for our vvooler iackets .-,fhicharri ,edtv-no 'weeks later. We began the year T952 witha skating party at Playlana. Everyone had a good time even though quite a few spills were taken. January 8 was another red letter day when we received our class rings. Now we are looking forward to the prom, the end of school, and our Senior year. l.EFT TO RIGHT, IST ROXX'gBc1Iy Mr'iIl.l1z1, Earl Xlaltelrzyer, Arthur l'fllllTII1dll, Rayrzorrd Alrllur, Allan llullaiid, D.tt..l House, Robert Nl11ler, Wxlllam Bare, lack hrrlltzarr, Lilurxa 5.lTlIlT, :ND ROXN1 bilidks Swwxrger, lxlarj. SOPI-IDMORES SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY On the sunny morning of September 10, 1951, we found groups of bewitched, bothered and bewildered students known as Sophomores in Susquehannock Senior High School. These students from Southern York County mingled for the first time as a combined class, We numbered 104 and are now divided into three groups or homerooms. After several weeks of confusion our entire class assembled and chose the leaders for this school term: President, Margaret Mutch, Vice President, Mary Vanover, Secretary, Alma Harrell Treasurer, Joyce Hendrix, Historian, Lucy Ann Lutter. Several days later we selected student council members who are: Larry Nonemaker, Mary Vanover, and Edwin Amapacher. With the passing weeks we found our number decreasing, as seven of our members dropped by the wayside. Last October found the Sophomore class gathered together for their first social celebrating Halloween, Gaily checkered shirts and ruffled skirts swayed and frolicked in accompaniment to the lilting strains of square dance music. Along with the coming of November came the jacket salesman from Webb and Wolfe of York, Pennsylvania. We chose our class colors, Kelly green and White, and selected the iackets in these colors. There was quite a hub-hub when these arrived as now we possesed a genuine feeling of belonging with our school's name branded across our backs, A month passes, and a strange clicking sound can be heard. You guessed it, it's roller skates. Everyone is preparing for the Sophomore skating party at Playland. On a frosty night in December, we grouped together in a friendly Christmas spirit and exchanged gifts . Summing our trials and triumpsh, this has been a very profitable year for the Sophomore Class and we are eagerly awaiting our future years together. FRESHMAN CLASS FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY From a class of 124, we have had members participatingin most ofthe school's activities. We are proud to say we had four boys on the football team, and five on the Jr. Varsity basket- ball team. Our class is interested in music, and Rodney Panian honored us by making the grade for District Band. We are happy to say we had five girls taking part in the Music Festival , On October I7, the ninth grade chose their officers. A few weeks later Student Council representatives were selected from the Freshman rooms. On October 30, we had a Halloween party in rooms I6 and l7, Donald Slonaker told a story that was humorous to all. This plus a few songs from our female quartet put all of us in a gay mood for the games thatfollowed. These games had most of us shivering from the cold, but we soon became warm when the refreshments were passed around. On December 27, the Freshmen held a belated Christmas party. Santa distributed the gifts and refreshments were served, We wish to thank our homeroom teachers, Mrs. Heindel, Mr. Thomas, and Mr, Rotz for helping to make our Freshman year a most enjoyable one. WARRIORETTES GIRLS LSASKETBALL Among the first of Susquehannock is a girl's basketball team which is efficiently coached by Miss Jeannette Kirkpatrick and Miss Doris Oyler. Twenty-one students participated in the first practice, later a few lostinterest and dropped off the team. Thus far many of the squad have showed great interest and have done a very good iob in winning as many games as possible, There will be a few seniors leaving but we hope the remaining players and additions will have a winning team next year. This far we have participated with these terms: North York 43 Susquehannock 38 West York 34 Susquehannock 38 Dover 3l Susquehannock 37 Dal lastown 36 Susquehannock 24 North York 33 Susquehannock 35 Kennard Dale ll Susquehannock 28 West York 37 Susquehannock 30 Jefferson 37 Susquehannock 46 X COACHES Co-Captin Stock Takes Shot BASKETBALL Both the Varsity and the Junior Varsity Squads have done exceedingly well in their first year of basketball at Susquehannock. Since many of our students have never played basketball before the Jointure, we were slightly handicapped. Nevertheless our school had a highlyskilled team. They demonstrated splen- did team work with a spirit of commendable sportsmanship. We are very proud of our team, Mr. Krebs and Mr. Sweitzer, their coaches. The team has gained a splendid record during this past season and we expect future Susquehannock basketball teams to rise to even higher glory. 61 Sweitzer Makes Laqup Co-Captain Bierlq Passes 0ff D.: 15.1 'Nil Xfg .I FO0YBAlLl X ' Q1 L5 l l 4 gmail BOO ERS ' f Vocational Agriculture Department Vernon L Masimore Mr Mergenthaler Donald and Roy Slonaker Connle and Sue Mr and Mrs Stewart Rennoll Miss Allnene Williams and Shrewsbury Restaurant Mrs Anna A Rohrbaugh Mr and Mrs Leroy Krebs and Family Mr and Mrs Richard L Sweutzer Fulleron and Gnngerlck and Family Lois Harry Gladys, Dove Shlrl and Charl Allan Bull Shaffer Roxy Mr and Mrs William L Bensel and family Joan and Roxy Mary Anna and Edna Charles O Summers J Mr Paul Rucker Ronnie and Ron Bo and Connie Mr and Mrs Raymond Cooper Mr and Mrs Horner Starner and Family Dolly and Joe Edsell and Fry Joan and Sammye Frank A Baker Smoe and Moe Shirley L Baker Janet and Charles Curtis M Albright Shirley and Ronald Mr and Mrs Thomas Fnssel Gordon and Linda Squd s Restaurant Rev and Mrs Stock Donna Mltzel and Joan Nease Mr and Mrs Earl H Bosley Earl Sprenkle and Stuart Gorman and Family Yvonne and Gary Mr and Mrs P W Sheppard Leo Bollinger Ducky Wagner and James Adams Rodney Panian Margaret Jane Pamon Compliments of Room 224 Mary and Nancy and Joyce and Beverly Jeannette Kirkpatrick Harold R.
