Mark Chandler — Born January 21, 1970 — Died October 8, 1980 Chris Wheeler — Born May 12, 1970 — Died February 18, 1985 A LETTER TO MARK, MY SON: They didn’t forget you, you know — Your classmates and friends — The ones you cared so much about — The ones who rode the bus with you and played with you after school. They really cared: I know because I found all those cards they made for you in 4th grade when you went to the hospital for minor surgery. I also found all those love notes from little girls. Even at 10 you were quite popular with the girls. Your teachers cared and they all liked you. I know because I found all your old report cards and read the comments each one made about you. OK, sure, you were a little too talkative and yeah, you wanted to be the center of attention. What kid doesn’t? But they also said that you were quite intelligent. Why, who knows where you would've been today. I like to think that you would’ve been the 1988 class president and valedictorian. How proud I’d have been. I wonder how handsome you would've looked in your cap and gown as you walked down the same aisle as I walked down 22 years ago. You would’ve been on the brink of manhood. Well, you've been gone 8 years now. For me it doesn’t seem like that long, but for others it has been a long time, but they didn’t forget you, Mark. They remembered, and by honoring you in this way they have shown great maturity and compassion. Mark, you would have been proud to have been a member of the Class of ’88. 2 Mark Alan Chandler With love, Your mother ivere Poem written by Herb Flint - Sunset Bowline Alley Friend 3 Principal’s Message As members of the Class of 1988, yours is the 27th class to be graduated from our high school. When you thumb through this book, as you will do many times in the years to come, many memories will be reawakened — of old friends you have lost touch with, of the great senior year enjoyed by both your football and basketball teams (long awaited), of your teachers, of the times you had in high school both good and bad, of how fast the years have sped by . . . all of these memories will come flooding back, but one memory in particular that I would like you to retain is of the pride I have in you and our school and what you have helped SVHS become. During the past year our school has been designated by the Commissioner of Education as one of the top sixteen high schools in the state. This great honor could not have been possible without you. The Class of ’88 will always be number one with me. In closing, I wish all of you the best of luck in the future. I am confident that you will continue to make all of us, who remain at SV, proud of you. Farewell! Samuel S. Cadden High School Principal 4 Assistant Principal’s Message To all members of SV’s Class of '88,1 wish all the health and happiness the world has to offer you for the rest of your lives. Your enjoyment of life has been very apparent during your time in the high school. Your collect- ive enthusiasm will be missed here, but will be dispersed with you to your next destinations; be it college, work or the service. Remember that these are the days of miracles and wonderment.” As leaders of the next cen- tury, you will be entrusted with the proper use of these miracles for society. Best wishes always, in all ways! 5 Joseph F. Stoner Assistant High School Principal Row 1: S. Kearnan. B. Galazyn. Row 2: K. Jones. C. Wheeler. Miss Eldred. T. Mainusch. ?. Row 3: T. Bowman. ?. T. I've been waiting four years to come here, wonder- ing about the United States, and now my dream is realized. All the great things my two brothers and other exchange students told me about how great the United States would be was underestimated. Coming from a big city in Spain, leaving my family, my friends and my language to come to an unknown place was difficult. But I have to thank the Cox family for making me feel at home and a part of their family; Susquehanna Valley High School for giving me the opportunity to come here to study; and to the teach- ers for their special interest in me, especially Mrs. Baldwin; and to all my friends who make me feel welcome. I wish everyone the best of luck in the future. Manuel Garcia Class of '88 1 Arild Stensund Bergen, Norway Manuel Garcia Zaragoza, Spain When I became an exchange student I didn't know much about the American school system. I had heard about the school spirit , but I wasn’t sure what it really meant. Now, after spending all these months in the U.S. I know what it stands for. This special enthu- siasm and support that I’ve seen during different kinds of school activities is one of the things I’ll miss the most when I go back to my school in Norway. I feel very lucky and fortunate to have had the chance to spend this school year at Susquehanna Valley. It's been an experience that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Among other things, I especially enjoyed the ski trips to the Greek Peak. During this school year, I’ve also had a chance to see some of the diversity of culture your country has to offer. I’ve been to places most Norwegians only can dream about seeing — New York City, Rhode Island, Disney World — Orlando, Connecticut and Los Angeles. I would like to thank my host families—the Spauld- ings and the Lawneys, all of the teachers at SV and of course, all of my friends for making this a year I'll re- member for the rest of my life! Arild Stensund 56 Spanish students enrolled in Mrs. Baldwin's levels II, III, and IV classes and members of Spanish Club have been busy during the school year out- side the classroom. The major activity for Fall was preparation for the Spanish Fun Fair, an annual event at which stu- dents from school throughout the South- ern Tier gather for a day of Spanish- related games and activities. At the Fair, SV students sold mini- ature pinatas and raffled a giant bull pinata which they made during activity period in the weeks prior to the Fair. A time-consuming but rewarding proj- ect was designing and making a name- tag for each student. Our dedication to detail enabled us to win the name-tag contest for the fourth consecutive year. In the Fall club members also gath- ered at El Cholo Cafe for a Mexican dinner. Spring activities center around the National Spanish Exam which is taken during March. After the morning exam, a Cultural Fair is held. Manuel Garcia, our foreigh exchange student from Spain, poses with the giant pinata which was raffled at the Fair. Jamie Race, Maria Franklin and Nancy Jewell serve Spanish food samples at the Fair. The SV Swimming Relay Team was composed of Jamie Race. Kevin House, Keith Russin and Matthew Smith. fL Our first place name-tags. 57 Homecoming Candidates and Escorts Kelly Weiss and Tim Scherer, Denise French and Todd Grubham, Kate Lynch and Joe Fabrizi, Kyra Lash and Todd Snitchler, Sandra Sickles and John Torres, Kristin Keegan and Tony DeRitis, Kara Cadden and Steve Bullock, Julie Chapman and Kris Kucera, Karen Christman and Pat Sine, Christine Staub and Rob Scherer October 24 — Homecoming ’87 It all began at 12:00 with a parade of the candidates and their es- corts, class floats and fire trucks — all led by the music of the SV Marching Band. At half-time of the football game, as the football team thundered out, the candidates were called to the field and the 1987 Homecoming Queen was crowned. Later that night came din- ner and the dance. The students were excused from school in the afternoon so they could rake leaves for our Conklin Senior Citizens. Town maintenance crews worked with the group as they gath- ered the leaves. Although it sprinkled rain, it didn’t dampen the spirits of the students and the Senior Citizens as they be- came better acquainted throughout the afternoon. The participating Spirit Club members were treated to a pizza party later in the week. 62 Sports . . . Gun handling teaches neuro-muscular coordination, self- discipline and team work. Most importantly it teaches respect for safe gun handling. At SV, skeet shooting has been an extra- curricular activity (club) for several years. The club welcomes all students (boys and girls) in grades 10, 11, and 12 to its weekly meetings and during the Fall and Spring months the members shoot trap and skeet at a local club range on a regular basis. Roger Studcr Treasurer Joyce Palmer Secretary Nancy Smith Corr. Sec. Gert Jenkins the ’87 FOOTBALL TEAM for the PRIDE you have given us throughout lyour WINNING SEASON 198 ' S, by: Coat1 bers’ Season R Wan partner As a coach here in my chair I think about the Sabers past year. A season filled with excitement and times of heartbreak I’ll now put in little quick rhymes. As football camp started, who thought there would be a drill sargeant decked out in cammy fatigues, or four crazy coaches who tried to be cool with colored bandanas, we all looked like fools. But don't stop there coaches, while throwing those passes our eyes were protected by giant sunglasses. And tin the first day of full pads, Rumpcistiltskin was the drill the backs had Big Dave Petryszyn ran over the guys. and Chocka heard bells and had stars in his eyes. With summer camp ended and cwo-a-days gone, the Chicken Hawk Defense was officially born. SV 21 — ME 7 Maine Endwell was our first game home, this game we won. it set the tone. We had a feeling deep inside, touch Tazz. we’d be winners. Sabers’ Pride. SV 41 — CW 40 The next Saber victory showed our true pride and one thought remembered was Never say die. Haskell and Johnson broke records that day, but two plays remembered I must have to say. A junior named Guman. a senior named Gage: an onside kick recovered, and extra point made. SV 34 — Drydtn 0 The next game was not a surprise to us all, and after the game, the Sabers stood tall. Dryden was weak. SV defense was tight and a penalty took back a run by Dan White. Graduating seniors Kevin Andres — 1 — SE OLB Judson Johnson 2 — IL HB Bill Dundon — 10 — SF.'HB Stephen Haskell — 12 - QB P Shawn Kern an' C- 3 — SE S Brian Pickert — 16 — SE HB Kyle Pritchard — Thomas Bowman Brian Killian — (Bold indicates 20 — Fi HB •— 21 — 25 — B' f Nick Mcodolia — 33 — TB ILB Dan White — 34 — TB S Scott Tyler — 40 — TB OI.B Todd Gage — 41 — PK DE Ken White — 43 — FB OI.B David Petryszyn — 44 — FB DE Chuck Harder — 15— TB OLB Bill Schoonmakcn— 54 — C 1LB John Finch — 61 G I LB Michael Vascello — 63 — G ILB Matt Michalek — 61 — G iLB David Finch — 66 — G ILB Mike Hisman — 72 — OT'DT Jeffrey Correll — 3 — OT D David Potter — 74 OT DT Gregory Fiato — 75 OT DT Tom Woolsey — 7 8 OT DT John King X 83 — TE DE Trevor Streno — 85 — TE DE Chris Connors — 89 — TE DE Brian Peacock — 99 — TF ILB The SV Football Class of 1988 T r SV 9 — Norwich 0 We went to play Norwich up at their hometown and who would have thought that ole Loochic’d come down, with an interception that sealed Norwich’s fate. That sent us undefeated into our next date. As practice week started we heard abour spies, from Chenango Forks country, we thought they were lies. But as a precaution. Coach Buc brought his guns, and the Chicken Hawk Defense sat perched on the rungs. Then all of a sudden from out of the blue, a Chenango Forks Chicken spy; Buc knew what to do! The Spy tried to steal plays, but Coach Buc took aim; a dead chicken and feathers was all that remained. ■ -• r+STli - -v - CF 20 — SV 14 We drove to their six, the clock time was zero, six yards from a win; but this time no hero For one shining moment the next week would show. Deep Threat Barnes as Blue QB and leading the show Remember how Deep Threat got pummeled and romped, and who could forget Skcrn’s swim in the swamp NV 24 — SV 13 We lost to the Cardinals, we had a bad day; but once again Jud made spectacular plays. The Homecoming game was against a Saint team with three super players, but one was the team We took two away and tried very hard, but Wiggins kept eating up yard after yard. SCC 28 — SV 20 Our game plan was simple, and hard to erase. Harder thirty-nine times right up SCC’s face The game was decided on one fourth down play a bad spot by the zebras, came up inches Saints’ way. SV 33 — Ontonla 12 Yellow Jackets were next, they lost all their sting. Haskell to Johnson, that familiar thought ringed. Two-hundred and forty-five pounds rumbled too on a long touchdown pass, a great block by Doo-Doo. Our last game came at another town’s Valley and “Ground Chuck” spearheaded one heck of a rally. Run right behind Trevor and Looch and Correll. with pancakes from Big Dave and Diff blocking well. We lulled them to sleep on our offense left side. Big Potts, Matt. King, Connors, the reverse now was tried. The ball went to Johnson, Haskell threw a key block. Jud left Warrior players faked out of their . socks. The P.A.T. catch by Otis was a difficult task, ’cause the two point pass banked up right off of his mask With the season now finished. Harder had his one grand, so did Haskell, and Johnson was our All-Metro Man. A year to remember who thought it w’ouki be. a season where we would end up six and three. One play ami six inches on one fourth down run. If we had them our record might be nine and one. GOLDEN SABER BOOSTER CLUB -V dULO IKE TO CONGRATULATE THE S.V.
