Dr. Jonathan Messerli Dr. Jonathan Messerli is the 12th president of Susquehanna University. He came to Susquehan- na in September 1 977 after four years as a profes- sor of education and dean of the School of Educa- tion at Fordham University. He is the first lay president of the University, all previous presi- dents having been Lutheran clergymen. Dr. Messerli is a scholar and administrator of national reputation. He has held faculty appoint- ments in both history and education at the Uni- versity of Washington, and Teachers College and Columbia College of Columbia University. He was dean of the Hofstra University School of Edu- cation before going to Fordham. Author of Horace Mann: A Biography, pub lished by Knopf in 1971, he also has written ex- tensively on contemporary education and Ameri- can educational policy. As a specialist in the history of education, he took part in seminars at a number of colleges and universities and held vis- iting professorships at Yale University, Sarah Lawrence College, the University of Hawaii, and New York University. Born in Albany, Oregon, in 1928, Dr. Messerli earned his B.S. degree from Concordia Teachers College, the M.A. from Washington University, and the Ph.D. from Harvard University. He also holds an honorary LL.D. from Concordia. Before becoming a college professor, he was a science teacher at the Lutheran High School and the Country Day School of St. Louis and later was coordinator of the International Teacher Develop- ment Program at Harvard.
