TWENTY YEARS FROM THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY We are now but twenty years away from the year 2000. For good reason, the Class of ' 80 can look to the next decade as a gateway into a troubled, but also, most promising future. The Cassandras of our time will speak of national decline, institutional retrenchment and a drying up of natural resources. For them, the future is one of trouble with precious little promise. But the accuracy of their prediction is as wrong as that of the 19th Century Washington bureaucrat who recommended that the Patent Office soon be closed since just about everything had been invented. In his myopia, he had overlooked the possibility of antibiotics, transistors, and the airplane. The Class of ' 80 will have its opportunities for discovery and service. If it has less oil and fewer appliances than its predecessors, so be it. The real growth in our resources will be in increased intelligence, training, and the commitment to live beyond ones self. Yours will be the task of achieving more with both less and more — with less material resources, yet with more effort, intelligence, and dedication. Generations which have confronted similar challenges in the past have written amazing histories. So will you. You have the education, the will, and the freedom in a democratic society to succeed. The Eighties are your great threshold. Godspeed. Jonathan C. Messerli President BOARD OF DIRECTORS Mr. C. Thomas Aikens II Miss Jane C. Apple Mr. Douglas E. Arthur Dr. Nelson E.
