Jonathan Carl Messerli was born in Albany, Oregon, on February 14, 1926. He earned the Bachelor of Science degree from Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Illinois, in 1947; the Master of Arts from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1952; and the Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1963. He was a science teacher at the Lutheran High School and St. Louis Country Day School, 1947-1957, and Coordinator of the International Teacher Development Program at Har- vard University, 1960-1961. He served as Assistant Professor of History and Education at the University of Washington, 1963-1964, and then as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor of History and Education at Columbia College and Teachers College of Columbia University, 1964-1968. He was Dean and Professor of Education in the School of Educa- tion at Hofstra University, 1968-1973, and Dean and Pro- fessor of Education in the School of Education at Fordham University, 1973-1977. He was elected the Twelfth President of Susquehanna University on May 25, 1977, and assumed office on September 1. Author of Horace Mann: A Biography, published by Knopf in 1971, he has also written extensively on contemporary edu- cation and American educational policy, done editorial work for several journals, and was Editorial Board Chairman for The Harvard Educational Review.
