Orientation is tests, meetings, fun, parties, meeting new people, and con- fusion. The purpose of the pro- gram is to help make the tran- sition from high school to col- lege a little easier for freshmen. Orientation starts a fun, ex- citing, and new way of life at Susquehanna. A W h Formed on campus in 1973, open to all students with an interest in geology, the THE GEOLOGY CLUB offers a wide variety of activities including trips to Antarctica! Across the nation people are becoming aware of ecology and man ' s relationship to na- ture. It is a new beginning for man and his environment. In 1972 S.U. became involved in this new era of harmony with nature by forming the SUS- QUEHANNA VALLEY OUTING CLUB. The members of the club want to promote being at one with nature and the appre- ciation of earth ' s beauty and natural resources. ■■■■■■■■■■■■■HBl mHH 87 BUT IF IN YOUR THOUGHTS YOU MUST MEASURE TIME INTO SEASONS, LET EACH SEASON ENCIRCLE ALL OTHER SEASONS, AND LET TODAY EMBRACE THE PAST WITH REMEMBRANCE AND THE FUTURE WITH LONGING. -KIBRAN The sisters of ALPHA DELTA PI contribute to both campus and community through their serv- ice and social activities. On campus the group has sup- ported the Heart Fund and the United fund drives. A Hallow- een party is jointly held with TKE for Selinsgrove children, a Christmas party for under- priviledged children is held with Lambda Chi Alpha, as well as an Easter party with Phi Mu Delta for these same chil- dren. Some of this year ' s social events include a pajama party with TKE, a formal dance, and a dance with KD. The sisters try to encourage school spirit with a bonfire on Home- coming weekend, and by offi- ciating at track meets in the spring. 89 A hit , a big, big hit. A thing of joy. What they have done is make a musical and a circus, a clown show, a magic show, a game show played with energy, gaiety, honesty and spirit. GODSPELL ' believes in God -and people-and possibility. - N.Y. Post. 90 A , Besides being in charge of the planning, organizing, and suc- cess of such campus wide ac- tivities as the GROTTO, the film series which provide en- tertainment on weekends, con- certs, arts and craft displays, and lectures, LANCE also serves students by sponsoring a Christmas party, Casino Royale, Road Rally, and a wide variety of programs open to all the campus. Lance has done a fan- tastic job of keeping things jumping and has plenty of good ideas and programs for S.U. in the future. 91 T , -. - ■S.U. SOCCER 1973 enjoyed a history — making year high- lighted by an upset win over Bucknell, a tough defense which set a new record for fewest goals allowed in one season and being selected as the number one seed in the EC. AC. post - season tourna- ment. The team was sparked by top performances by a number of outstanding fresh- men starters and a tough set of l ines and halfbacks. This dy- namic team has made soccer come alive at S.U. and deserves continuing support. With only four seniors graduating, the team has the potential to make 73 only the beginning of win- ning seasons to come. Our team can be proud of its 6 - 3 — 4 record and seeks to im- prove that next season. 93 The closing of the 1973 WOMEN ' S FIELD HOCKEY season brought about a begin- ning — an awareness of real team spirit and of growing abilities. Any goal worth ach- ieving can be fully realized only when hard work and per- serverance bring the reward. These women won this victory. Season Record: 0-6-1 94 The INTRAFRATERNITY and PANHALLENIC COUNCILS consist of representatives from the nine fraternities on cam pus. The function of these councils are to establish rush rules and supervise the rush program. These organizations also bring together social fra- ternity relationships. The In- trafraternity and Panhallenic Councils sponsor Greek Week, a combined effort on the part of all the fraternities and soror- ities to socialize with the campus as a whole, and the Blood Drive, a service function to benefit the surrounding communities. 95 ;« f Hki ' I ALPHA XI DELTA sorority meets once a week and participates in a variety of extracurricular activities. These activities include giving a faculty breakfast, serenading the residence halls, visiting a local nursing home and participating in community affairs, such as the Halloween parade, whenever nec- essary. 97 Thirty-four upperclassmen begin the year by celebrating Labor Day in training sessions - that ' s the Student Staff. In addition to being the last to leave and the first to return from vacations, head residents and resident assistants are the ones who keep peace in the dorms, listen to complaints and get things fixed. A love for irregular hours, meetings, and those maintenance request slips are prerequisites; but the experience of leadership and Mrs. French ' s steak dinner make it all worthwhile. 98 Homecoming, October 6, was a gor- geous fall day which was perfect to enjoy the day ' s festivities. Carol Kehler was crowned Homecoming Queen at friday night ' s coronation and reigned over the football game and half-time S.U. Sports Hall of Fame inductions. Although the football team suffered an upset, the soccer and cross country teams were victorious before a crowd of enthusiastic supporters. The evening was highlighted with a concert by Les- ter Flatt and The Nashville Grass. 99 J 1 00 In the fall of the year, FOOT- BALL, one of the largest athlet- ic teams representing the Uni- versity on opponent campuses, brings at least four Saturday af- ternoons of collegiate football to our campus and is one of the main attractions on the two biggest weekends — Homecoming and Parent ' s Day. It offers the specialized athlete who participated in high school football an op- portunity to continue his par- ticipation on the college level. Over fifty percent of this year ' s squad are freshmen and, hope- fully, they will represent the beginning of more successful seasons in future years. Season final record wasn ' t the best, 2- 7-0, but the team and coaches are already looking and plan- ning for a winning 74 season. mzz ztfk Txma : 101 3 102 The CHEERLEADERS try to pro mote spirit and enthusiasm at the home sporting events. When the girls aren ' t cheering, they keep busy making spirit signs, decorating locker rooms, and leading the school in giv- ing our teams the support they need. Coach Wagenseller ' s second year as coach looks to be the beginning of a new era for Sus- quehanna CROSS COUNTRY. This year the men overcame inexperience with a fine en- thusiasm, talent and hard work and may be proud of their record: 8-5-0. . JUH,f, 103 The MARCHING BRASS and PER- CUSSION performs a variety of mu- sic at football games and several parades. This group of stuudents consists of sixty players, six color squad members, and a drum major. 105 Green blazers, white roses, and shouts of A.O.T. characterize KAPPA DELTA sorority. The sis- ters have found that their so- cial service projects bring them closer, not only to mem- bers of the community, but also to each other. In addition, to the National Philanthropy, which is the Crippled Chil- dren ' s Hospital in Richmond, and an adopted child, Kappa Delta includes weekly visits to Rathfon ' s Convalescent Home. The sisters also sponsor a Christmas party for the foster children in the area so that the other end of the age spectrum in the community is not neg- lected. They ' re also the girls who sponsor b i-annual pan- cake breakfasts and fashion shows. Kappa Delta is many things, but most of all it ' s people who care. 106 107 The one word that most de- scribes STUDENT SENATE ' S contribution on campus is communication. Senate is the students ' sounding board on issues that concern them, both social and academic. Con- versely, Senate is the adminis- trators ' first line of commu- nication with the students. Senate attempts to keep the S.U. community informed through the published min- utes. The present exec has worked very hard to foster a feeling of open commu- nication and trust among the administrators and students. Senate is attempting to be- come an information center for all involved in activities at Sus- quehanna. 108 The JUDICIARY BOARDS have been dormant for the past few years-this year ' s board is in the process of rewriting the con- stitution and in doing so hopes to make it a viable and vibrant aspect of campus life. Student ludiciary is attempting to broaden the definition of the judiciary system from merely a disciplinary body to an impor- tant, thorough and open chan- nel of communication: a link between students and adminis- trators. The old system didn ' t work-and it ' s taking time to make sure the new one will, but at least it ' s a beginning. 109 The ASSOCIATED WOMEN STU- DENTS began tins ( u b organ- izing task forces to work on con- cerns ot interest to all women on campus such as the improvement ol Health Center services and exten- sion ol dorm visitation hour- w s sponsored a Woman ' s Da at the beginning of the year, held the an- nual Big-Little Sister banquet. The brothers sponsor Christmas par- ties for both underpriviledged children, and with the help of Sigma Kappa, for the State School, give a fall rush party with Kappa Delta, and donate food to needy families of Selinsgrove so that they too might have a Thanksgiving feast. The Bunders are also known for their active participation in varsity, as well as intramural, sports at S.U. Naught Without Labor is their well de- served motto. 115 The national honorary dramatic fraternity ALPHA PSI OMEGA, tries to promote enthusiasm for theatrical experiences. Mem- bers strive for excellence both onstage and behind the scenes. KAPPA MU EPSILON is a na- tional mathematics society honoring those students who have exhibited high scholar- ship in mathematics. The so- ciety primarily recognizes the outstanding achievements of its members. In addition, it strives to further its members ' interest in mathematics by in- viting outside speakers to S.U. as well as featuring lectures presented by members of the department ' s faculty. 116 PSI CHI is Susquehanna ' s psy- chology honorary society. A national society, Psi Chi at- tempts to advance the science of psychology; and to encour- age, stimulate, and maintain scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particu- larly in psychology. PHI ALPHA THETA the nation al honorary fraternity, pro- motes scholarly excellence in history. Students must have a good average in history and overall in order to be eligible. Phi Alpha Theta sponsors lec- tures and movies with the He- roditans as some social func- tions during the year. 117 I 18 KOINONIA, an organization for those interested in theology hopes to challenge spiritual growth. Exploration through discussing, learning, and un- derstanding is its purpose. Koi- nonia aims to expand the com- mitment of its members out into the community, making theology an applicable reality. Koinonia also serves as a ve- hicle for pre-theological stu- dents to study religious con- cepts. The CHAPEL COUNCIL is a group of people who attempt to relate their concern for man and his total environment by meeting the needs of students on campus as well as those of the surrounding community. Through personal commitment to meet these needs, the group believes and always strives to be an instrument of social change. The CHAPEL CHOIR is a large group that presents music for about half of the Sunday morning services on the campus and for the traditional Christmas Candelight Service, Baccalaureate and Graduation. Within its religious framework, it presents music of widely varying styles. 119 ARTIST SERIES As you like it 120 The AMERICAN MARKETING ASSO- CIATION is striving towards the goal of securing jobs for Susquehanna students. This year the club is hold- ing meetings with interested busi- ness firms to help promote the hir- ing of Susquehanna University grad- uates. Like all clubs at S.U., the HERODO- TANS offers something special to all students on campus. The history club brings together students from all fields at its various lectures, field trips and movies which are enjoyed by all. 121 The brothers of PHI MU DELTA are active in many ways on campus. Each year they sponsor the Muscular Dystrophy dance marathon, give an Easter party for underpriviledged children and put on the Chicken Barbecue for the community. 122 123 In recent years the FORENSICS organization on campus has brought much recognition and respect to Susquehanna Uni- versity by competing in debate tournaments across the U.S. This clubs ' past performance is one to be admired and the fu- ture holds many more trips, much more debate, plenty of hard work and research and a continued respect among other college teams and organiza- tions. IJ4 The UNIVERSITY CONCERT CHOIR, under the direction of Mr. Cyril M. Stretansky per- forms music ranging from early Renaissance to late Corn- temporary. Concerts are given on campus three times a year and the choir has also been known to tour various parts of the East Coast, as well as abroad. 125 In its second year at S.U. the FLYING CLUB can boast of its ten flying members, the wide variety of opportunities and ex- periences in the excitement of flying. Students from all areas find the flying club one of the most unique and rewarding on S.U. ' s campus. Under the supervision of Mr. Haaland, members of the PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB are giv- en the chance to de elop their talents and skills in shooting pi tures, developing and punt ing. Resources have been limit- ed in the pas! , but the new dark room located in the Learning Center should pro- dui e plenty of talent and great photography. The purpose of the Student PSEA-NEA is to acquaint the prospective teacher with the aims, responsibilities and ben- efits of a career in teaching. Varied programs are designed to look at teaching from the many viewpoints of the high school student, student teach- er, cooperating teacher, admin- istrator, parents and the profes- sional organizations. The CHEM CLUB is open to all chemistry majors and staff as well as any student interested in chemistry, regardless of his background. Activities include selling lab coats and coffee, slide rule clinics, an annual chicken barbeque, bowling tournaments, picnics, field trips to industries and anything else that may be interesting and re- lated. 127 Nitty Gritty Dirt Band ■128 ROTC is a newly installed pro- gram at Susquehanna and is run in cooperation with Buck- nell University. Interestingly enough, the program includes two women students of Sus- quehanna. 129 I i() PHI SIGMA KAPPA says, We ' ve been bawled out. bull- dozed, walked on, cheated, and mooched, stuck for sales tax, svntax, red cross, green cross and double cross; asked to help the March of Dimes, UNICEF, Cancer Crusade, men ' s relief and stomach relief. We ' ve booked like heck, been drunk, got others drunk, lost our shirt and part of our house, and because we can ' t ref well at games, we ' ve been cussed, and discussed, talked to, talked about, and darn near ruined, and the reason that we ' re alive today is that we have fun at the Phi Sig House. 131 132 The 1973-74 VARSITY BASKET- BALL season was one of the successes and dis- appointments. After rising to defeat Upsala, the Crusaders saw their post-season hopes deflated with an untimely loss to Elizabethtown. The team competed in two holiday tour- naments and Ralph Wolken- hauer and Dave Long picked up all-star honors for their out- standing performances. Long began what could be a record- setting career for the Crusa- ders, scoring and rebounding effectively throughout the sea- son. )im Baglin turned in an impressive final year with de- pendable outside shooting. But the team ' s overall record this year did not live up to pre- season predictions. After an- other fair season, the team looks forward to next year with the anticipation of beginning a winning tradition for Susque- hanna basketball. 133 The CANDLELIGHT SERVICE is a Christmas tradition of Sus- quehanna University. Through this carol service the joy and tranquility of this holiday spirit warms the hearts of all who attend. 134 The SKI CLUB, coordinated by Mr. Clyde Lindsley, was active this year with movies and meetings. The club ' s main event of the year is its ski trip to Stowe, Vermont during February vacation. Think snow! 135 The Susquehanna JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM again sported a winning record this year. Outstanding per- formers included Mike Tim- mons, high-scoring )ohn Neu- hauser, Bob Zog Hertzog, Ron Brett with well over sev- enty assists, and Bob Buckfel- der. These players will be look- ing to see action next year in the hopes of bettering the var- sity team ' s record. Coach Moore can be justly proud of this year ' s fine junior varsity squad. 136 The WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL TEAM may not have had an impressive season but the girls worked hard and had fun. Two of the team ' s best scorers grad- uated last year and many of the starters had to be taken out due to injuries. Because it ' s a young, inexperienced squad, the team is looking forward to a new start next year. 137 Nineteen-seventy tour marks the Centennial year for SIGMA KAPPA ' s sisterhood. Through- out the year, their activities in- clude a retreat at a nearby camp, ushering at home foot- ball games, collecting for UNI- CEF, and an ice cream party for freshman girls in Seibert Cafe- teria. During the Christmas sea- son, the sorority prepares for their boutique in December, has a coed tree trimming party, and carols at the Doctor ' s Con- valescent Home. In addition to their Christmas visit, Sigma Kappa makes weekly trips to the convalescent home to serve coffee and cookies to the patients. As Spring approaches, formal pledge class activities are in full swing and the sorori- ty joins the brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha in a visit to the Se- linsgrove State School. The Sig- mas end the year with a formal dinner-dance, initiation ban- quet, and farewell senior ban- quet. EHH Mi 138 139 ii ■■1-40 From the beginning, Susque- hanna University has had suc- cess each year in its WRES- TLING program. The wrestlers who dedicate themselves to our type of program, have en- joyed success also. The Crusa- ders have had two varsity wres- tlers who did not lose a dual meet since the beginning, eight years ago, with a combined record of 64-0-3. This year is no exception. Co-Captains Randy Bailey and |oe Schiller, along with Randy Bogar, Paul Burns and John Liken all have had winning seasons. 141 142 1973-1974 PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE OF SUSQUE- HANNA UNIVERSITY THEATRE A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams, February 8,9 and 10. Cyrano De Bergerac, by Ros- tand, adapted by Krucken- meyer, May 3 and 4. Curse You, John Dalton, by Wilbur Braun, November 16 and 17. The Hostage, by Brendan Be- han, lanuary 10, 11, 12 and 13. 143 The SYMPHONIC BAND con sists of ninety students repre- senting virtually every curricu- lum. The group presents a pub- lic campus concert each term and additionally performs sev- eral concerts off campus. Last Spring, the band went on a week-long concert tour of Mexico along with members of the Concert Choir and several interested students. The MUSIC EDUCATORS NA- TION AL CONFERENCE (MENC), Chapter 176 exists here on campus to promote music and music education for both the members and the community at large by dis- tributing the Music Educators ' journal (ME|), participating in the state convention, providing various guest speakers, and holding a number of informal coffee hours. In conjunction with the Department of Music, MENC sponsors an annual Ca- reer Day for high school stu- dents contemplating a career in music. 145 A national fraternity, TAU KAP- PA EPSILON, participates ac- tively on campus and in the community. The brothers open their year with their traditional campus pajama party which was held with Alpha Delta Pi this year and their Fall Frosh Free-tor-All with Alpha Xi Del- ta rhey also are active in serv- ice projects tor the benefit of the community. I4h 147 The CRUSADER is the S. U. campus weekly newspaper. This year under Editor-in-Chief Ray Everngam the Crusader featured articles not only on campus activities but also on such issues of national impor- tance as the energy crisis, as well as items of general inter- est. The Crusader staff is kept busy covering plays, films, mu- sic recitals, sports events and other student and faculty activ- ities and providing a sounding board for editorial and reader comments. 1 48 WQSU ' s aim is to entertain, educate and inform. Through- out its development there have been ups and downs, good periods as well as bad. The present staff of WQSU feels that this is the beginning of a new era, an era of no soap radio, consistently good radio for the listening public. WQSU helps to extend Sus- quehanna University far beyond this campus. It reaches people. Its business is people! 149 PI GAMMA MU is a national social science honorary frater- nity which tries to promote the interest of the social sciences on campus. It is comprised of students, alumni, and faculty who elect eligible juniors and seniors interested in social sci- ence and with high scholastic standing. The national trench honorary, PI DELTA PHI, is mainly con- cerned with recognizing those students of outstanding schol- arship in the French language and literature. Phis group tries to encourage a deep appreci- ation of France and its people among the college members and on campus I JSBHI ' V A 2 J mmm w ■j R- ji 1 9 150 SIGMA ALPHA IOTA is an honorary fraternity for women students who are proficient in music. This group performs several recitals and concerts during the year, and usher at musical events on campus. This helps to achieve their pur- pose of promoting musical in- terest. The BIOLOGY CLUB is a new organization to appear on campus. This group has had a few lectures on topics related to the field of biology. They also bowl with the Chem and Geo Clubs to further the inter- relationships between those in- terested in science. The club serves coffee for students studying for lab practicals late at night. The purpose of this club is to promote a close at- mosphere of friendship among biology students. 151 - s Ml. Its purpose is to acquaint those within the group to a large va- riety of small ensemble works, as well as provide an appreci- ation and continued growth in the Susquehanna string pro- gram. The group performs a number of times during the academic year with concerts in December and in the spring. It is also used to assist other per- forming groups on campus such as the choir. The S. U. SINGERS will be completing their eighth season of providing pop-musical en- tertainment for the campus and community. Comprised of ten singers and an accom- panist, the Singers is a stu- dent-directed, student-organ- ized group providing a wide variety of popular music, and displaying a group unity that makes it a popular group in the hearts of many. 153 l r 4 The br others of Theta Chi or as they are better known on the Susquehanna campus as the SPUDS are active in just about every campus activity and help out many organiza- tions in the community with fund raising benefits, Christmas parties and helping out at the State School. And don ' t forget about those Friday nights be- fore home football games when the brothers can be seen serenading the girls ' dorms in the middle of the night! 155 The INTERNATIONAL CLUB first organized in May of 1971 and has tried to promote some type of cultural exchange among the foreign students and the American people. The club works very closely with the International house and students of Bucknell Univer- sity. FOCUS is Susquehanna ' s liter- ary magazine and was first published in the Spring of 1964. Focus, an annual publica- tion, contains selected prose, poetry and art work done by members of the student body. 156 The SPANISH CLUB bases its activities at la Casa Espanola where Esther Asin from Bolivia is in charge. The club puts on skits, sponsors conversation hours and slide presentations, and celebrates holidays such as Columbus Day and Pan-Ameri- can Day. The GERMAN CLUB was founded as an organization that would be involved with the stimulation of German cul- tural activities and the promo- tion of an interest in the Ger- man language by having speak- ers concerning German culture, films and special dinners. The club also wishes to maintain relations with other clubs of similar nature on our campus as well as on other campuses. 157 The LANTHORN 74 edi- tion is an attempt to start some new beginnings. Al- though the staff was dis- jointed at times and en- countered many prob- lems, we hope that the end was worth the begin- ning. 158 4 . r ' r-v ■1 IVC3 AD No Picture: Paul Nolte Michael Carlini Darryl Willis SENIOR DIRECTORY and those elected to Who ' s Who in American Universities and Colleges Gerald Zukowski Finance Susan L.
