Gustave W. Weber, Th.D., D.D. President of the University Wilhelm Reuning, Ph.D. Dean of the University TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SENIOR CLASS: Years ago I ran across a fine definition of remembrance in the course of my reading and study and I copied it from the book whose title and author have long since been forgotten. The unknown writer said: The remembrance of beauty, the beauty of a thing, or of personal relationships, or of a country, has always seemed to me the chief end of life. The present cannot be held; it slips through our grasping fingers, becomes immediately the past. The future may be neither beautiful nor worth remembering,- certainly its beauty will be accompanied by ugliness and tragedy. But what has happened is ours a nd cannot be taken away from us; and the mind, like the gauge screen through which gold is run, transmutes in retrospect almost everything into loveliness. Remembrance is the only sure immortality we know. Thus it will be for you as the years unroll. The memories of your four years at Susquehanna will become more and more lovely as you grow older, and we are happy that this is a future expectancy. May the rest of your life ' s span be as fruitful, as enthusiastic, and idealistic, as were the years we spent together in this pleasant place of learning. DEANS PRESIDENT 12
