TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1965: The four years you have spent at Susquehanna University should have helped you mold a life whose hopes for all humanity are high, whose courage and desires to be effective in action are great, and whose ability to live with reality without forgetting the ideal is ever present. Should this have happened you will have learned to dream great dreams for your- self and your fellow-men. Such a person, made so by his formative college years at a Lib- eral Arts institution, will continue ever to learn and to grow. When Ulysses returned home after the Trojan War and his long odyssey, he sought for peace, but soon learned he could find it only in restlessness, in divine discontent. He came to realize, as you will also in time, that peace and contentment of life come not from rest, but from strife, not from inactivity, but from action. Here are the words Tennyson has him speak: How dull it is to pause, to make an end, To rust unburnished, not to shine in use! As though to breathe were life! Life on Life Were all too little, and of one to me Little remains; but every hour is saved From that eternal silence, something more, A bringer of new things; and vile it were For some three suns to store and hoard myself, And this gray spirit yearning in desire To follow knowledge like a sinking star, Beyond the utmost bound of human thought. The last two lines are heroic in their inspiration. May they abide with you as the most precious memory of your years here and that you may Follow knowledge like a sinking star, Beyond the utmost bound of human thought. Gustave W. Weber President 16
