President Weber To the Graduating Class of 1964: You have spent four glorious years at Sus- quehanna University, a liberal arts college. This descriptive phrase means the arts be- coming to a free man. The liberal arts are char- acterized bv freedom, not privilege; by concern for the nature and dignitv of individual man in the physical universe, not simply society at large or only group values; by broad, not narrow con- siderations. The goal of a liberal education is a quality and frame of mind as much as it is a body of knowledge. A truly liberal education is qualitative and inspirational and a means to an end; not quantitative, informational, and an end in itself. A liberal education provides a directing force use- ful for this life in reaching the next. The end of a liberal education is wisdom and wisdom is direct- ed intelligence, an ability of the mind that en- ables a person to put things in right order and to control them toward some ultimate goal. The liberal man must also be a moral man. When William Faulkner accepted the Nobel Prize several years ago, he voiced eloquently a faith for the educated man: It is not men in the mass who can and will save Man. It is Man himself, created in the image of God so that he shall have the power and the will to choose right from wrong, and so be able to save him- self because he is worth saving — Man, the individual, men and women . . . who will believe alwavs not in the right of men to be free of injustice and rapacitv and deception, but the duty and responsi- bility of man to see that justice and truth and pity and compassion are done. In this spirit we send you forth into whatever the future may hold for you. Never be afraid. Never be afraid to raise your voice for honestv and truth and compassion. JU $ £— Gustave W. Weber, Th.D., D.D., President
