Gustave W. Weber, Th.D., D.D. The President To the Members of the Senior Class: In his play, Our Town, Thornton Wilder says, Every time a child is born into the world, it ' s nature ' s attempt to make a perfect human being. Well, we have seen nature pushing and contriving for some time. We all know she is interested in quantity, but I think she is interested in quality, too. Nature is interested in quality, and increasingly so are we. The ideal of liberal education lies at the very roots of American history. For centuries this kind of education has been esteemed throughout western civilization as that of the ideal citizen. Such an education has been made available to you at Susquehanna University. But the need for well- stored minds and thoroughly-trained skills is exceeded only by the necessity for character and for responsible action. Education brings together in unique fashion the life of the mind and the life of the spirit, the rational and the moral, the intellectual and the spiritual. This, we hope, has happened to your life here on our campus. As an institution is the lengthened shadow of a man, so may the long educational shadow of Susquehanna University be extended and extended through you until all who know her will rise up and call her name blessed.
