BLOUGH su • v V v pResentinq the UnthoRn fOR the CLASS Of 1963 SUSQUEHANNA UNIVERSITY • SELINSGROVE, PENNSYLVANIA College days are memorable days — for each individual in bis own particular way. Somehow, these jour years glide swiftly by and are soon a part of the past, yet never completely forgotten. The four seasons seem to emphasize this passage of time, as Mother Nature follows her course. And so we may correlate the two, and express our years at Susquehanna in terms of the changing seasons. At tumnal breezes rush through the trees as the falling leaves cover the ground in a splendid array of color. So the neophyte freshman arrives on the college campus, delving into his studies with a full heart. The dormant seed of winter is merely sleeping in its silent state, as the sophomore involves himself more deeply into the aca- demic curriculum. The fresh spring bud takes a sneak preview of the world around as the junior becomes alive and more aivare of the miniature world of which he is an integral part. With careful planning and a watchful eye, the bud opens into the full bloom of summer. This final stage of growth sought after by every senior is a dream become reality. Emblazoned on the Crusader shield are the seasonal leaves. May they ever be a constant reminder of fond remembrances of golden days gone by. Barbara Stockalis Editor George Mowers Photo Manager zTT hour short years ago, the present senior class entered Susquehanna University. That same year a new president arrived on campus also. Since then Susquehanna has progressed to new heights — both in physi- cal facilities and academic attainment. A man dedicated to the advancement of higher education, and whose talents are innumerable, has been the mainstream source of energy in promoting all these projects. His achievements have gained for Susquehanna far more than mere words can express. Therefore, it is with a great deal of pride and pleasure that the 1963 LANTHORN is dedicated to Dr. Gustave W. Weber in behalf of bis first graduating class — the Class of 1963. 6e6ication to president weeeR •rf l tABle op contents Dedication University Staff Seniors Activities Athletics Organizations Greeks Underclasses Student Directory Page iv 7 . 19 . 47 . 59 . 75 . 101 . 119 . 135 1 Sometimes thoughts are like the falling seeds of Autumn Tossing, turning, servants of the wind — Until they find their destination And are bedded deeply In the minds of men. To lie there hidden during the Winter Dormant, sleeping — but not dead. They only need a silent call To wake and beckon them from rest. Thus, when summoned by the searching mind Striving, rising from the depth They thrive upon a grain of Truth And burst forth Knowledge — product of the Spring. For then, upon its stage of Summer growth Climbing, struggling toward the summit At last achieves the sought-for goal. And, thus mature and fully ripe, Becomes the harvest — Wisdom. « ♦ ■ , ' 4 f Gustave W. Weber, Th.D., D.D. The President To the Members of the Senior Class: In his play, Our Town, Thornton Wilder says, Every time a child is born into the world, it ' s nature ' s attempt to make a perfect human being. Well, we have seen nature pushing and contriving for some time. We all know she is interested in quantity, but I think she is interested in quality, too. Nature is interested in quality, and increasingly so are we. The ideal of liberal education lies at the very roots of American history. For centuries this kind of education has been esteemed throughout western civilization as that of the ideal citizen. Such an education has been made available to you at Susquehanna University. But the need for well- stored minds and thoroughly-trained skills is exceeded only by the necessity for character and for responsible action. Education brings together in unique fashion the life of the mind and the life of the spirit, the rational and the moral, the intellectual and the spiritual. This, we hope, has happened to your life here on our campus. As an institution is the lengthened shadow of a man, so may the long educational shadow of Susquehanna University be extended and extended through you until all who know her will rise up and call her name blessed. On Monday, September 10, the Class of 1966 was wel- comed to Susquehanna by the members of the 1962 Orien- tation Committee. Under the direction of Jane Kump and Lynn Lerew, 310 freshmen and transfer students began the first phase of their introduction to campus life and traditions. The heavy schedule for the week included meetings, teas, placement tests, registration and many parties, and ended with a picnic at Shikellamy Park. With the arrival of upperclass- men, the Freshman Class became an integral part of university life. 48 Co-Chairmen — Lynn Lerew and Jane Kump. Assistant Co-Chairmen — Marge Brandt and Jim Skinner. With master of ceremonies Dave Newhart paving the way, the freshmen showed their talents in many areas ranging from group skits and pantomimes to individual song and dance routines. Highlights of the evening were a hula dance by Yvonne Otani and a piano solo by Arthur Tuttle. It was obvious that much preparation went into the pro- gram and the Frosh once again made Stunt Night a night to remember. It may be funny, but it spells victory! Frosh get even at last. Keep your eyes on the hands. Frosh Stunt Night 49 It looks like registration is almost as complicated for parents as it is for students. Parents Day On September 29, Susquehanna students welcomed families and friends to the campus to participate in Parents Day activities. After registering, the guests attended banquets, viewed a soccer game, and were given the opportunity to meet the faculty at a tea held in the Alumni Gymnasium. The high- light of the afternoon was Susquehanna ' s gridiron victory over Ursinus College. Rest assured, the game you ' ll see is worth waiting for. Coffee and doughnuts — a welcome sight. 50 Opening Convocation Convocation exercises marking the begin- ning of the 1962-63 academic year were held September 14 in Alumni Gymnasium. Dr. Charles E. Many alum- ni, representing the University ' s past, registered early Satur- day morning in preparation for the day ' s activities. The present was portrayed by the coronation, pep rally and bonfire, the traditional float parade, Queen Jane Beers and her court, and the important Crusader victory over Wag- ner College. Sorority teas, fraternity banquets, and, of course, the for- mal dance Roman Holiday brought this most memorable weekend to a close. A beaming face and radiant smile — Queendom was inevitable. I Artist Series Culture of an excellent quality was of- fered to the students and faculty of Susque- hanna in the form of the 1962-63 Artist Series. Beginning the series was Mr. William Shirer, internationally known commentator and author of the best-selling novel The Rise and Tall of the Third Reich. Mr. Shirer ' s discussion of the world situation was well received by all. Basil Rathbone, popular Broadway actor, visited the campus in November and de- lighted his audience with both comical and dramatic monologues. In December, Mr. Eugene Istomin, con- cert pianist, thrilled Susquehannans with his amazing ability at the keyboard. The deaf- ening applause showed the intense excite- ment that Mr. Istomin ' s program created. The world renowned Vienna Octet made an appearance in February. Led by aggressive Captain John Luscko, the Crusaders were to begin their most successful season. They compiled an impressive 9 and record, remaining undefeated and untied. Playing small college football powers in five states, the Garrettmen extended the nation ' s longest unbeaten streak to a lengthy 22 games. The men of the Orange and Maroon finished sixth in the balloting for the Lambert Cup, ( symbolic of small college supremacy in the East ) , and were chosen to initiate the annual Cement Bowl game in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Susquehanna rejected this bid in hopes of receiving one for a contest in a more favor- able climate, i. e. the Florida Tangerine Bowl. Much to the dismay of the Crusaders and their loyal supporters, the Florida bowl officials understandably selected two schools with large student enrollments. The season opened at the third annual Kiwanis Charities game for the Amos Alonzo Stagg Old Hat Trophy. A crowd of 5,000 in Sunbury watched S. U. battle Upsala for a 16-0 conquest. Larry Kerstetter and Larry Erdman scored TDs while center and linebacker John Rowlands was honored as the game ' s outstanding player. Upsala was limited to 21 yards in rushing; however, victory was costly as Captain John Luscko received a knee injury that would sideline him for five games. The Bears of Ursinus were the Parents Day victims at 28-0 Kerstetter scored for two six-pointers, being assisted by half- back John Vignone and right end Jim Gibney. The Lycoming game proved to be the toughest of the year for the Crusaders and the most satisfying one for senior center Tom Samuel. His field goal from the 18 yard-line with 5 minutes to play provided the 3-0 margin of victory. Wagner College was the Homecoming opposition as John Rowlands recovered a fumble on the Seahawks ' 2 yard-line with 2 minutes remaining in the game, and with the score tied at 7-7. Larrv Erdman ran it over for 6 with Samuel kicking the extra point, giving the Staten Islanders a 14-7 defeat. The final game of Middle Atlantic Conference competi- tion pitted the Crusade rs against previously unbeaten and un- tied Western Maryland. Larry Erdman scored twice and the defense, led by Dave Revak, Dick Hirsch and John and Dick Garrett, held the Green Terrors to 4 first downs. Western Maryland ' s record was severed and Susquehanna became MAC champs by being on the desirable end of a 22-8 showdown. The Garrett Steamrollers flew to the following three games, the first one being against Trinity College at Hart- ford, Connecticut. This was the game that the coaches had anticipated would make or break the 1962 season. Sopho- more speedster Larry Erdman accounted for 12 of S. U. ' s 20 points against Trinity ' s 16. He received strong support from his teammates, who netted 357 yards rushing for the afternoon. Oberlin, Ohio was the scene of the next game against Oberlin College, the only team to mar Susquehanna ' s 1961 record with a 7-7 tie. This year ' s game was hardly a contest, with the Crusaders getting revenge to the tune of 42-7. John Luscko returned to action with a six-pointer while Kerstetter ' s two touchdowns broke the Susquehanna University career scoring mark. It was quarterback Don Green ' s day as he ran for three TDs and passed to Gibney for another against Union College at Schenectady, New York. The one-sided 46-9 score made it 8-0 on the season for the Crusaders. The final game was a Susquehanna romp over Delaware Valley 51-3 before a crowd of 3,500 ecstatic fans at Univer- sity Field. A flaming hot dog stand contributed to the day ' s excitement, mainly engendered by the breaking of numerous records. By barreling across the goal-line three times, Larry Kerstetter set a new season scoring record, while Larry Erdman established a new season rushing record. Halfback John Vignone ended an exemplary defensive season with three interceptions for a new S. U record. John Luscko completed his Susquehanna football career with two TDs and a lifetime rushing total of over 1000 yards. Thus the 1962 football season concluded with nine victories and no defeats or ties to become the greatest season yet seen by the Crusaders. Even before the initial game on the extremely rigorous schedule, the kickers had numerous handicaps to overcome. The most outstanding was the delegation of the badly rutted intramural Softball field to the booters to use for inter- collegiate soccer games. This was necessary since the former soccer field was now used for practice by the football team. Another hardship endured by the team was the critical loss of many veteran players, among whom was center forward Pete Beiger who was studying in France. Pross Mellon, how- ever, proved himself an adept replacement and was ably assisted by sophomore Pete Freimanis and freshman Dan Travelet. Captain Frank Yaggi concluded his fourth year as the stalwart goalie with an impressive record of 107 saves for this season. Both Head Coach John W. McCahan and his assistant, T Dean Witmer, were greatly encouraged by the enthusiasm and improvement in team coordination exhibited by the players. Cross Country Susquehanna ' s cross country squad began its second year of intercollegiate competition with the utilization of a new course. Last year ' s grueling 6.5 mile run was greatly altered. The new scenic course of 4.3 miles lies southwest of the campus beginning at University track, extending to the ad- joining trailer factory, and passing through several cemeteries and cornfields before termination back at the athletic field. Coach David Hindman saw the harriers through a 2-7 season. The two victories are an indication of the latent potential of the comparatively small team. Captain Bill Pearson felt that each year the squad will benefit by its increased experience. Much of the future suc- cess of this young team will depend on the interest displayed by incoming freshmen, as evidenced by this year ' s freshmen Don Seiple and Pete Johnson. The cross country team certainly is covering quite a bit of territory there. s. u. s. u. s. u. s. u. s. u. s. u. s. u. s. u. s. u. s. u. Five opponents were added to this year ' s schedule, expanding it to a rigorous 23 games. The team was comprised of mostly veteran personnel, having as returnees the top six players from the 1961-62 aggregation. Heading the hoopsters was Clark Mosier, sharp-shooting senior guard, the highest scoring player in the annals of S. U. basketball. He was assisted by senior forwards Bill Moore and Jim Gallagher, junior center Tom McCarrick, junior guard foe Billig, and junior forward Clark Schenk. In addi- tion, sophomores Tom Endres, Bob Hancock, and Doug Reyn- olds aided in strengthening the Crusader ' s squad. The 1962-63 campaign was launched at Fairleigh Dickin- son University where the Barrmen squeaked through with a 51-50 victory. Joe Billig was the high scorer with 16 points, while Duke Schenk saved the game by sinking a pair of foul shots. Temple, the perennial nemesis, barely escaped the Cru- sader ' s avengance with a close triumph for the Owls at Philadelphia. The S. U. quintet returned to the win column with an 84-70 victory over the previously undefeated Catholic University team. Mosier was good for 39 points while Gallagher con- tributed 22 others. He also was notable on defense, grabbing 14 rebounds. In addition, Moore and Schenk had 17 and 16 rebounds respectively. The Bears of Ursinus provided the opposition for the first home game and enabled the S. U. dribblers to chalk up num- ber three, 37-19. Mosier led both teams in scoring with 14 points on six field goals and two fouls. After defeating Wilkes, the tables were turned, and the Crusader five found themselves overpowered by a staunch Wagner team. Susquehanna regained composure by blasting the Lions of Albright 81-50 and by outlasting the Red Devils of Dick- inson 36-35. In the Albright contest Mosier set the pace with his 30 points, followed by Jim Gallagher with 12. McCarrick baffled his opponents and the capacity crowd with his superior quota of 16 rebounds, assisted by Moore and Gallagher with 1 5 and 1 1 respectively. Mosier once again led the Crusader scoring with 1 1 in the low scoring game with Dickinson. Moore controlled the boards, snatching away 12 rebounds. The Barrmen had an exciting and extremely successful home weekend by conquering the visiting dribblers from American University and Juniata College. Mosier once again took the lead with 24 against American. The J. V. basketball squad concluded a productive season having been sparked by several promising freshman and soph- omore shooters. OFFICERS The Student Chapter of Susquehanna University utilized its September and October meetings to reor- ganize and strengthen itself as a functioning body under its new officers and with its new adviser Mr. James B. Steffy. The stated purpose of an MENC chapter is to provide an opportunity for professional development for college students in music education through participation in state, division and national meetings of the organization, and through on-campus activities of the chapter. The fall membership drive, including freshmen for the first time this year, yielded a total of 56 members. The meetings, held once a month, featured a speaker, panel discussion or film on some aspect of music education. Outstanding among the fall speakers was Mr. Allen W. Flock of the music faculty at Bucknell and president of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, who gave a talk on the na- tional organization of MENC, mentioning especially its many publications. The project which occupied most of the chap- ter ' s attention this year was the sponsorship of the Student Chapter Luncheon held during the PMEA Annual State Convention on December 1. Approxi- mately 135 people attending the event heard Dr. Margaretta Carey, coordinator of the arts, Pennsyl- vania Department of Public Instruction; music by the S. U. Chapter Chorus of Sigma Alpha Iota; and a panel discussion by four educators on their concept of a good music teacher. The chapter ' s activities took on an added impetus from the experience and infor- mation which the members gained while attending the many workshops of the State Convention. There were many humorous moments and some minor trage- dies, but under the guidance of the charming and helpful housemother, Mom Carter, everyone managed to survive. Homecoming found the Bunders displaying another ex- cellent float in the annual parade. This year ' s theme was Christ Divided Time. Meanwhile, on the gridiron Lambda Chis were holding down key positions on the varsity football team and were instrumental in bringing about an undefeated season. The social aspect of the fraternity, as in the past, was not lacking. There was a hayride in the fall as well as several parties throughout the year. At the annual Christmas Formal the lovely and gracious Patricia Shintay was crowned the new Crescent Queen by retiring Queen Lynn Vekassy. The Bunders were also active in community projects, whether mov- ing furniture into Alpha House or sponsoring a Christmas Party for underprivileged children. February 1963 found the house active with many new pledges who were finding out what the motto Naught With- out Labor really meant. Finally as June rolled around once more, the fraternity found itself saying good-bye to many seniors. They were leaving to find blighter horizons, but they would never forget the great spirit and teachings of Lambda Chi Alpha which had been a part of their college life for three and a half years. Fall brought many wonderful things to Tau Kappa Epsilon. First, the Tekes held an open house and entertained the Fresh- man girls. This was followed by a romp through the streets of Paris at a Parisian Party and then a trip across the ocean to the open prairies with a Rodeo Romp. The musical Tekes were heard amidst the falling leaves in their annual fall and Thanksgiving serenades. Compli- menting the bright leaves of autumn was Shangri-la, Teke ' s entry in the Homecoming Parade. The coming of snow brought a festive air of Yuletide cheer and Christmas In Music. Even upstaging Santa Claus was the Teke Sweetheart, Donna Day. Music prevailed once again with Teke ' s annual spring serenade and their participation in the Inter-Fraternity-Sorori- ty Sing. Theta Chi ' s social season began with a Parent ' s Day buffet after the football game with Ursinus. The buffet was followed by a meeting of the Parents ' Club. October 6 saw the beginning of the fraternity ' s first Rush Party. Grant Schneider, social chairman, employed Johnnie ' s Tenor Band for entertainment. Next on the schedule was a banquet for all returning alumni on October 13, Homecoming. November 3 was a busy day. Between 3 and 6 o ' clock an Open Jam Session was held for the whole campus with music by the Delchords. There was a Beatnik Party that night beginning at 9 o ' clock with music provided by the Lightning Decades. After the final production of The Madwoman of Chaillot on November 17, a Jam Session was held with music again by the Delchords. Then, on December 15 the annual Theta Chi Winter Formal (Christmas Formal) took place. Music was provided by Bob Rhoads and his combo. Bobbie Claffee was crowned Dream Girl of Theta Chi. A banquet was held before the dance and was a huge success. The formal con- cluded the social events for the fall semester. The spring semester too, found the brothers busying them- selves about the house preparing for various activities; all of which culminated in the annual Spring Formal which brought the year to a final close. Alpha Delta Pi The sisters of ADPi began an eventful school year by win- ning the sorority float trophy for 1962 with a serpent depict- ing Time the Devourer. Alpha Delta Pi held two parties for the under-privileged children of the area. Santa Claus came to the children with a Ho-Ho-Ho at the Lambda Chi Alpha house, and the chil- dren pinned the tail on the Easter Bunny with the brothers of Phi Mu Delta. Along with these parties the sisters visited the Selinsgrove State School and contributed to national phil- anthropy projects. Hear Those Sleigh Bells Ringing came out of the dark- ness when the ADPis had their Christmas Serenade for the campus residences. Besides their many serenades, the sisters enjoyed lounge dances, a co-ed party and the traditional shoe shine. As the spring months rolled around, the sisters spent an enjoyable day with their dates at Half Way Dam. The annual senior banquet left many fond memories in minds of all the sisters as another college year drew to a pleasant close. Alpha Xi Delta The excitement of the fall semester was heightened on Parent ' s Day when both parents and families of AXiD sisters were guests at a tea held after the football game. Homecom- ing was a day of happy welcomes and hello agains as alumnae returned and attended a tea held in their honor. As their formal philanthropic work, the sisters of Alpha Xi Delta acted as volunteer hostesses at the State School the first two Sundays of each month. In addition, all the sisters acted as guides during the school ' s Open House held in the spring. Along with these other activities, the sisters of AXiD managed some time for their books and were rewarded by retiring the Sorority Scholarship Cup after winning it for the third consecutive year. Christmas was a merry one for the Alpha Xi ' s for Santa brought them a chapter mascot — Al FUZZIE — an enthusiastic bear. Recognized throughout the country as a symbol of the Fuzzies, the sisters were delighted to welcome Al to S. U. ' s campus. Spring, with its budding trees and feelings of laziness pro- vided the scene for the AXiD Rose Formal where the sisters danced amid pink roses to the strains of dreamy music. Later, to celebrate Parents Day this year the sisters dined their parents royally at the Blue Hill Restaurant. A fashion show of the latest campus styles and the shipwreck lounge dance com- plete with ship and survivors brought an end to an exciting season. Winter not only brought strains of Christmas carols, but also echoes of the Charleston as the KDs held a roaring twenties coed party. The annex of the gym never looked so different with its juke box, casks, checkered tablecloths, and candles. And, to coin a phrase, a good time was certainly had by all. A coed roller skating party also provided mem- ories of fun, thrills and spills. Besides another fashion show, spring found the Kappa Delts outside Seibert equipped with hoses, brushes, and rags as they engaged in their annual car wash. The proceeds from this project went to Kappa Delta ' s philanthropy, the Crippled Children ' s Home in Richmond, Virginia. All in all it was quite an eventful year for the KDs. The sisters of SAI returned from their highly successful trip to the SAI National Convention in August of 1962 full of ambition for their plans to further the cause of music on Susquehanna ' s campus. They were happy to welcome a fall pledge, Edith Godshall, and to welcome back a returned sis- ter, Arlene Roberts. The chapter ' s project was the design and sale of felt pillows in fraternity and sorority colors. In early October the girls presented a serenade of fraternity songs, then a formal tea for Freshmen and transfer students. November was a busy month: Sigma Omega gave a dinner for their patronesses and alumnae to express their appreciation for the support of these two groups in making the trip to Chicago possible. Mrs. Helen May, Iota Province president, made her official visit on the 6th and 7th. On November 29 a miniature musical was given at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Convention in Harrisburg. December saw the Incorporation Day Tea and the first campus appearance of the year, a Christmas Concert given jointly with Delta Alpha Chapter from Lebanon Valley Col- lege. The Freshmen were entertained Beatnik style at the beginning of the new year, and many of them were welcomed into pledgeship in the early spring. Among the spring ' s musical events were the Charter Day Tea and an all-campus serenade. An annual SAI feature, The Inter-Fraternity-Sorority Sing, was given an extra measure of competition by the presentation of two cups, one for the winning sorority and one for the winning fraternity. 116 Sigma Alpha lota MEMBERS Cherie Ayres Lois Binnie Donna Brown Mary Margaret Craft Lynda Dries Karen Frable Edith Godshall Nancy Good Donna Graybill Pamela Kay Eleanor Klingerman Carol Marburger Sally McKalip Emily Partridge Jean Price Arlene Roberts Donna Rothermel Margaret Simon Sandra Troutman Linda Wassam Man ' Jane Witmer Miss Alice H. A workshop was held among the three local chapters, which featured guest speakers and panel discussions on the topics of inter-sorority relations and community responsibility. Regulations concerning rushing procedure were exten- sively revised to provide for an invitational party system and a more restricted preferential bidding program. As a result of expansio n of the student body, the Council has worked on plans for a fourth sorority Dn campus PERSONNEL President - - - - Eileen Pettit Secretary - - - Eleanor Heishmann Treasurer - - - - Penny Stamps Adviser . - . - Dean Steltz Interfraternity Senate Many important jobs were tackled by the Interfra- ternity Senate this year, and several changes in policy were made. The Senate ' s constitution, governing activities of the four fraternities, was revised, and the position of faculty chairman was eliminated. The group is now student-gov- erned, with a president who serves as chairman and who is chosen by a rotation method. The rush program was changed to do away with a concentrated Rush Week second semester. Formal rush session now occurs in the period from October 1 to Thanks- giving vacation. The Interfraternity Senate, in cooperation with the Panhellenic Council, sponsored the formal Greek Ball in February in honor of new pledges. A. Padula, J. Whitney, C. Leathery, N. Smith. To the underclassman it is one way to see his name and picture in print; to the senior it is a collection of memories to last throughout life; and to me it has been a wonderfully enriching experience. This type of experience is inevitable when the password of everyone concerned is cooperation. Thank you hardly seems to be an adequate ex- pression to all those who have given of their time and talent; but if taken in the most sincere sense it will have to do. My most heartfelt thanks go to a very competent staff for their promptness with all assignments, to George for his untiring efforts, to Mr. Tamke for his understanding and guidance, to Grit Publishing Company for helpful suggestions, and especially to the Indispensable Man. I feel jus- tified in saying that we may all take pride in our accomplishment — Lanthorn 1963. B. S.
