To the Members of the Senior Class: A college education is one of the greatest possessions anyone can have. Only one out of fourteen people over twenty years of age in this country has a college degree. With graduation from Susque- hanna you become members of a very select group. You are receiving your degrees when significant world history is in the making. This is not only one of the most challenging and dangerous times for free peoples but also one of the most in- teresting and exciting times known to mankind. You live in a period when rapid advancements of knowledge are altering nearly every aspect of our way of life. Tomorrow ' s world will be vastly different from that we know today. This is truly the age of progress, characterized by miraculous inventions. It is also a period which is characterized by a conflict of ideas between those who advocate freedom and human dignity, and those who advocate domination of ideas and control of the lives of others. Because of your education you are well equipped to accept the challenges of our times and to do your part in strengthening America as a symbol of freedom for men everywhere and as a leader among nations of the world. In the continuing search for truth, then, I would summon you to the challenge of the whole self. For the fabric of life is woven in the living of it, and what you will at- tain of wisdom will ultimately be distilled out of your total experience, out of your behavior as well as your knowing, and out of your most persistent yearnings. We shall watch you fondly as you leave these pleasant ways and move into the arenas of struggle, knowing you are girded for battle with the whole armor of truth. Gustave W. CAMPUS LIFE Freshmen Orientation Jane Kump, Tom Hanshaw, Judy Brndjar, Dr. Zimmer Co-Chairmen — Tom Hanshaw, Judy Brndjar Assistant Co-Chairmen — Lynn Lerew, Jane Kump The largest Freshmen Class ever to enter Susquehanna Uni- versity wa s welcomed to campus by the members of the 1961 Student Orientation Committee on September 10. Under the capable direction of Seniors Judy Brndjar and Tom Hanshaw, the week ' s activities — from the opening meeting on Monday to the picnic at Shikellamy the following Sunday — were very successful. Three hundred ten Freshmen were introduced to their new home and were given a taste of the full and active life of Sus- quehanna. The 1961 Orientation Committee did a highly com- mendable job of orienting the new students. Congratulations for a job well done! Committee members lend a hand. Dr. Weber reassures a questioning father. Frosh Stunt Night Don ' t we look cute? Sob, Sob, Sob! Shelley Berman the second ! Providing an evening full of laughs, this year ' s Stunt Night proved to be one of the best ever staged at S. U. With the Stunt Night performance, the Freshman Class firmly established themselves on campus. Led by the very versatile Dave Koch and Ray Masullo, the Frosh showed the upperclassmen that they definitely have some talent to offer Susquehanna. The well- rounded program included both group and solo acts alternating with the comic routines of Dave and Ray. Pantomiming, sing- ing, dancing and dramatic readings plus the hilarious antics and sparkling ad-libbing of the M.C. ' s provided an evening of en- joyable entertainment for weary upperclassmen. Congratula- tions Frosh for a fine debut! Homecoming A new queen is crowned. Homecoming 1961 brought the Far Look to our campus. The celebration was officially launched with the coronation of lovely Home- coming Queen Judy Behrens who reigned over the weekend whirl. Kind- ling the spirits of everyone, the traditional bonfire and prefootball march set the stage for the exciting gridiron tilt of the following afternoon. Shak- ers shaking and brass blaring characterized the spirit of Saturday ' s spec- tators while the driving Crusaders racked up another victory over the West- ern Maryland eleven. Not to be forgotten are the beautiful floats display- ing hours of careful planning and work. The weekend drew to a quiet close as students and alumni danced among the clouds of a Celestial Paradise. Another Homecoming to add to memories. Is it a ritual? — Oh, no! It ' s the pre-game pep rally! Peppy, pert and pretty they cheer us on. Dormitory Dedication Dr. Weber conducted dedication ceremonies. btt I The two new dormitories housing a total of 300 students were first occupied last September. Artist Series 7 Susqueharmians were offered excellent cultural oppor- tunities this year through an outstanding Artist Series. Rich- ard Dyer-Bennett, a prominent folk and ballad singer, enter- tained a capacity audience with his tenor voice, guitar and a set of melodies that ranged from a victory song used by English soldiers following the battle of Agincourt to the ballads of World War II. Ogden Nash, America ' s foremost and probably best- known writer of light verse, was also a big hit with his program of witty verses and comments. In January, courageous labor columnist, Victor Riesel, permanently blinded by an acid attack while investigating the labor underworld, visited campus. His dynamic and informative lecture shed light on one of America ' s most pressing problems. Jennie Tourel, world famous mezzo-soprano, appeared in March to thrill an audience with lovely strains of music. And winding up this most enjoyable and interesting series was the appearance in April of the Juilliard String Quartet. GALEN DEIBLEB The recital season of the 1961-62 series was launched with an unusually fine program of music for the piano given by Mr. Galen Deibler. The large audience in attendance wel- comed his fine facility and musical expression in a program which ran the gamut of literature from Beethoven to Brahms and from the evanescant Impressionistic techniques of Debussy to the dissonant trends of Bartok. On November 16. the Music Department presented its first student recital. A bit irregular, the recital featured eleven students performing in various mediums and doing a vast cross- section of musical literature. Those participating were Lloyd Wolf, organist: Nancvlee Dunster. soprano soloist: Lois Binnie, pianist: Bonita Schaffer. soprano soloist; and a string ensemble consisting of Sandra Swab. Emily Partridge. Thomas Donlan. Dr. Virginia Payne. Jean Price. Carol Mover, and Shirley Foehl. On December 17. Mr. John Magnus presented a Faculty Recital for those who were not able to attend his concert at Town Hall in New York City during the holiday season. Mr. Magnus, an outstanding bass-baritone soloist, showed great dexterity and excellent musicianship in a varied program which featured both the French and the German Art Songs. Later scheduled recitals and programs in the season included an opera workshop, a student organ recital, a duo-piano recital by Mr. Deibler and Mr. Billman. and student recitals by Nancvlee Dunster. Robert Summer, and Robert Dreisbaugh. MR. JOHN MAGNUS 36 Best Dressed Co -Ed Sponsored by T ie Crusader midc;e roth Vivacious Midge Roth was selected by the student body as S. U. Facing a bigger and better schedule, the Orange and Maroon topped the record of the previous year when they had compiled a record of seven wins and one loss. The Garrettmen found themselves, at season ' s end, ranked number seven in the balloting for the Lambert Cup. which is emblematic of small college supremacy in the East. Susquehanna was also in the run- ning for a bid to the post-season Tangerine Bowl before a strong Oberlin team held the Crusaders to a 7-7 tie on the rain-soaked University gridiron. The Crusaders opened the season with the annual Kiwanis Charities ' Game before 5.000 people in Sunbury and met a surprisingly strong Ly- coming eleven. It was not until the final three minutes of the game that Larry Kerstetter scored, and Tom Samuel booted the P.A.T. to give the Crusaders win number one, 7-0. The Bears of Ursinus were the next to suffer as halfback Terry Kiss- inger scored two touchdowns and the defensive forward wall led by Di- Francesco, Perfilio and John Rowlands stopped the Ursinus attack to give S. U. a 28-6 victory. Before a Parents Day crowd, halfback John Luscko romped for three T.D. ' s as the Orange and Maroon swamped Swarthmore 34-12. The following Saturday, S. U. journeyed to Staten Island, N. Y., where they outplayed a highly-praised Wagner squad to pick up win number four on the strength of end Mike Rupprecht ' s two six-pointers. Western Maryland was next to feel the steamrolling attack of Sus- quehanna as the Crusaders scored at will and the defense sparked by Markle, Rohland and Campbell produced a 34-8 Homecoming victory. The story was the same against Delaware Valley as sophomore sen- sation Don Green led the Garrettmen to a 30-0 shutout. Oberlin College, led by fullback Alan Spiegelberg, halted the Crusader streak when a last minute field goal fell short after a Green to Hauser aerial produced the lone S. U. score. Larry Kerstetter got the Garrettmen back to their winning ways by scoring three touchdowns as Susquehanna humiliated Hobart College. Soccer, which had been dropped from the S. U. sports scene in 1940. was revived again as an intercollegiate sport in 1960. Faced with a tough schedule in 1961. the Crusader booters while picking up onlv one victory, gained something which is sure to help in the coming campaigns — experience. The only player graduating from this year ' s squad is Len Purcell: so Coach Heim will be counting on the experience gained this year to make soc- cer a winning sport at Susquehanna. The booters were led in 1961 by Peter Beiger who kicked home nine goals and goalie Frank Yaggi: both these boys received nom- inations at seasons end for Little All-American honors. 44 i - First Row — John Frederick, Bill Pearson, Paul Filipek. In the first year of competition, the Crusader harriers, coached by David Hindman, gave a good showing of themselves by ending the season with a record of two wins and six losses. Both Orange and Maroon victories came over Washington Col- lege and both occurred in dual meets. Like all other sports at S. U., cross country will have a host of returnees come next year. Only one loss will be felt, that of senior captain Jim Lpdegrove. It is felt that with the growing interest being taken in cross country, the sport will continue to grow until one day it will play a very important role in the Susquehanna sports program. 45 First Row — Ann Spriggle, Ruth Gebhard, Vicki Lawler, Barbara Stockalis, Leila Bruno, Priscilla Limbert. Women 9 s Hockey At the close of the 1961-1962 girls ' hockey season, the score book tallied no victories, four defeats, and one tie for the Susque- hanna girls. This record, though not especially impressive, can be considered an improvement over the scores of S. U. last year. The Crusader girls scored goals in four out of five games this year whereas last year in their first year of hockey, they were unsuccessful in scoring any goals. Lack of experience was the deciding factor between loss and victory for the Crusaderettes. Although they were defeated by actual goals scored, their spirits were only slightly dampened. Throughout the whole season, these eighteen girls displayed good sportsman- ship and love for hockey. Led by Captain Toby Brodisch and coached by Miss Kay Coch- ran, the team gained a lot of experience which will aid them in future years. S.U. s.u. S.U. s.u. s.u. BASKETBALL Susquehanna ' s basketball team, with Coach John Barr at the helm and junior guard Clark Mosier setting a torrid scoring pace, has compiled a highly commendable record. The Crusaders opened the 1961-62 campaign in Phila- delphia when they went down to defeat at the hands of a strong Temple University five 75-60. Following their initial defeat, the S. U. dribblers bounced back to defeat Western Maryland and Rider before they were defeated by Gettysburg College 70-60. The Crusader cagers then put together a five-game win- ning streak as they bowled over Ursinus, Lebanon Valley, Harpur, Wilkes, and Wagner. The Lions of Albright Col- lege, however, put an end to Susquehanna ' s winning streak in the Albright Fieldhouse when they upended the Barrmen. Susquehanna got back on the winning track as they dumped Lycoming, Hartwick, and Juniata in three away games. The Barr-coached five returned to the Selinsgrove ball hall on February 5 and broke the all-time Susquehanna scoring record by trouncing Dickinson College 126-75. Scranton University stunned the Crusaders by upsetting them 95-90, and then S. U. lost to MAC leader Albright, 63-51 before the largest home crowd of the season. 49 S. U. on the defensive. Student Council As the student governing body of Susquehanna, the Student Council worked very hard during the school year. In striving to fulfill its aim of providing a representative and responsible student government, the Council succeeded in a host of worthwhile activities. The twenty brothers of Phi Epsilon were in- volved in much activity during the past year. Probably of most im- portance was the selection of Tau Kappa Epsilon as a national fraternity. The brothers first social event was the formal spring party in May which was deemed highly successful. The beginning of the new school year saw the opening of Phi Epsilon ' s first fraternity house. A well-received Homecoming float and a number of open houses and parties introduced Phi Epsilon as a worthy addition to Susquehanna ' s campus. A Fraternity Is Born The initial steps to the formation of a fourth social fra- ternity on Susquehanna ' s campus were taken late in the 1960-61 school year by a group of interested male students. A five member body, known as the Steering Committee, became the first governing council of the potential fraternity. Plans were made, pending official administrative recogni- tion, that the fraternity should be called Phi Epsilon and should affiliate as soon as possible with a national fraternity. Phi Epsilon was officially recognized by the Administra- tive Cabinet on February 27, 1961. and by the Interfra- ternity Senate on April 30, 1961. Three national fratern- ities, Sigma Chi, Phi Kappa Tau, and Tau Kappa Epsilon showed strong interest in Phi Epsilon. After much discus- sion and deliberation Phi Epsilon on May 9, 1961, chose to affiliate with the nation ' s largest social fraternity. Tau Kappa Epsilon. On the local level, six additional pledges were taken into the fraternity raising the total membership to twenty. Short- ly before the close of the ' 60-61 school year the brothers of Phi Epsilon were pleased to learn that the property of the late Charles T. Aikens had been donated to Susquehanna University, and would serve as the home of Phi Epsilon. Welcoming thirteen new pledges with 1962 rushing, the members strengthened their brotherhood. Thus the seeds of this fraternity were sown. To the brothers of Phi Epsilon, we wish continued success as their fraternity grows and develops. Most important among the activities throughout this year was the complete renovation of the exterior and interior of Phi Mu ' s fraternity house and the addition of a new wing on the west side of the building. Homecoming was a big day at Phi Mu Delta as ceremonies got underway in the morning with the rededication of the house by Pre sident Weber. Following the football game, the annual Homecoming banquet was held at the Blue Hill Restaurant where both alumni and active brothers gathered in congenial surroundings. During the Christmas holidays many of the brothers journeyed to New York City where they heard honorary brother John P. Magnus give a recital at Town Hall. The social year at Mu Alpha was highlighted by hayrides, jam sessions, western parties, and those ever-popular Jones Boys. The annual Phi Mu Delta-Alpha Delta Pi Easter party was held at the fraternity house for underprivileged children of the area. In intramural sports, the Orange and Black once again held their own in what proved to be strong competition. On campus, Theta Chi surprised even coach Paul Tressler with its record on the intramural gridiron. Even though a deficit of one point in the championship game furnished the Big Red with only a second place team, they did set some school intramural scor- ing and defensive records. The brotherhood partly assuaged their wounds by retrieving the scholarship cup and by preparing an at- tempt at retrieving the Interfraternity-Sorority Song Trophy. Theta Chi paid tribute to Dr. Thomas Armstrong, faithful ad- viser, by dedicating the chapter room of the house to him. With all the splendor and enthusiasm of a merry Santa, the sisters of the Gamma Kappa chapter received a special visit from the fat little man at their Christmas party. Spring with its budding trees and feelings of laziness was also the scene for the AXiD Rose Formal where the sisters and their dates were able to enjoy some of the Spring Fever. Kappa Delta began the school year with the fall fashion show. The sisters presented to the students the new fashions to be seen on cam- pus. Springtime found Kappa Delta showing bathing suits and gowns in the spring fashion show. These were philanthropic projects, and the proceeds went to the Crippled Children ' s Home in Rich- mond, Virginia. After the Parents Day football game, the sisters treated KD parents to a banquet held in their honor. The dark skies of fall found the sisters guided by candles on the fall serenade. Likewise the group sponsored a lounge dance with a jungle party theme and later in the year, enjoyed a memorable Winter Wonderland party. If anyone trudged down the path by Seibert in the spring, they may have been hosed down and washed by a Kappa Delta actively engaged in the annual car wash. The benefits from this project went to their philanthropy. They have been invited to sing at the National Convention of Sigma Alpha Iota, professional fra- ternity for women in music. A very active group, Susquehanna ' s SAI ' s have won the honor of being named co-outstanding chapter in Iota province. This includes an automatic nomination for national outstanding chapter which will be announced at National Convention this summer. A whirlwind of events has frequently put the girls in the spot- light during the year. For their first public appearance of the year, they and the Crusaders presented a joint Christmas concert at the S. C. A. Christmas Vespers. In February, they entertained the stu- dent body and the public with their annual concert. Soon after this they presented a joint concert with a new SAI chapter from Lebanon Valley College. In addition to all this group activity, many of the sisters appeared throughout the year in student recitals. In March, SAI brought to our campus the famed Nagel Duo Piano Team which presented a seminar on duo piano performance. The SAI annual formal dance, held in March in honor of the new pledges highlighted the group ' s social activities of the year.
