HISTORIAN OF DISTINCTION DEDICATED to LEARNING DEVOTED to TEACHING APPRECIATED by ALL Dr. Russ examines a 1906 autocar in Florida. An old railway coach catches the interest of the Russes. To Dr. William A. Russ . . . whose devotion to the academic spirit has inspired the minds of those who know him. A great deal of the joy of life consists in doing per- fectly, or at least to the best of one ' s ability, everything which he attempts to do. There is a sense of satisfaction, a pride in surveying such a work ... a work which is rounded, full, exact, complete in all its parts ... It is this conscientious completeness which turns work into art. — William Mathews In the short time he was among us, Blair Heaton quietly displayed the essential qualities of manhood. His life was characterized by dedication to his chosen profes- sion, boundless love for his family, and thrill for sports. He gave his talents unsparingly to his alma mater. ORIENTATION The largest freshman class in the history of S. U. was introduced to its first phase of college life by ori- entation co-chairmen, Gil Askew and Elaine Turner. A heavy schedule was arranged for them, and the bewildered freshmen caught a glimpse of what their next four years at Susquehanna would be like. Answers to those many questions can be found in the Student Handbook, explains Dorothy Anderson, editor, to freshmen Joan and Joyce Lowry. FOOTBALL 1960 With the new head coach, Jim Garrett, in com- mand of the 1960 Crusader football team, football for- tunes at Susquehanna readied a new, exciting peak. By providing fans with eight Saturdays of action-packed, hard-nosed football, the team established a national record by allowing opposing elevens a stingv 17 points. Plagued by injuries throughout the entire season, Coach Garrett turned to his bench repeatedly and never failed to produce a suitable replacement in a crisis. Co-captains Dick Derrick and Neal Dutch Rebuck, both of whom sustained injuries, played great football to round out their college football careers in fine fashion. MANY ZEROS DEFENSIVE HEROES In the first annual Sunbury Kiwanis Charities Foot- ball Festival, played before an overflow crowd at Sun- bury, the 1960 Crusaders, featuring the debut of head coach Jim Garrett, rolled up their initial victory of the season at the expense of Lycoming College. John Lus- cko provided most of the scoring punch, scoring two touchdowns, one on a ninety-yard return of the second half kick-off. Receiving post-game kudos for their per- formances were Ben DiFrancesco, voted most valuable lineman, and John Luscko, most valuable back. Kerstetter bulls, Lycoming pulls; Hauser checks yardage. Terry and the Vikings.  % ♦  ♦ The Bears of Ursinus College suffered profusely from the Crusaders well-rounded attack, while receiving for their efforts, a well-rounded goose egg. Frosh signal- caller Don Green maneuvered the Orange up and down the gridiron at will, scoring on two occasions to account for a fair share of the 33-0 score. Swarthrnore followed suit, although it took some doing for the Garrett-planned offensive to conquer a really stubborn Garnet defense. Don Green and Terry Kissinger provided one touchdown each for the Cru- saders. CRUSADERS BOW TO VIKING FIND WAYNESBURG MORE TO LIKING Upsala took advantage of a defensive let down late in the game, turning what appeared to be a Susque- hanna Homecoming victory into an agonizing 8-7 de- feat. Up the fjord without a paddle during most of the contest, the Vikings scored only minutes after a Derrick to Kissinger aerial produced the lone Crusader score. Slamming the door in the faces of Waynesburg, Larry Kerstetter, frosh fullback, carried the Crusader offense, while DiFrancesco and company played a sup- porting role worthv of an Oscar. DiFRANCESCO SUPPLIES SPARK NEW DEFENSIVE MARK While the Colonels pounded away in vain at the Crusader rock-ribbed defense, Susquehanna leather- luggers were also having a sticky time. But S. U. emerged on top of a 9-0 tally by virtue of some fancy pass-receiving by Mike Rupprecht and a field goal by Tom Samuel. Dick Derrick and Larry Kerstetter maneuvered for touchdowns while DiFrancesco and cohorts contained the Cape May Coast-Guarders. The result — another shutout for the Crusaders. The Garrettmen wound up a successful campaign in fine fashion by trouncing the Dickinson Red Devils by a 26-0 count. Scoring TD ' s were Derrick, Rebuck, and Bowman (all seniors) and John The Bullet Luscko. Garrett at work. Grotesque? Yes, but misrhty effective. U. co-eds now turn their thoughts to the forthcoming basketball season. Under the direction of Coach Betsy McDowell, the team earnestly prepared for its first match with Lock Haven. Unfortunately, the lasses of this campus proved to be too strong for the S. U. six. With a burning desire for victory, the team snapped back to slip past Blooms burg, 38-31. High hopes for a second victory died when a rematch with Lock Haven on their home boards ended in a 50-30 decision in the opponent ' s favor. The girls ended the season with a 2-2 record as they cruised to an easy 50-31 victory over Wilkes in their last match of the season. Ti . U. ' s chimes. During the time when the exams are being given the campus actually seems deserted. Here Bogar Hall and Steele Science are the scene of the semester testing. The library provides a haven for study and is a reservoir of knowledge. During exam week and times when term papers are due it is the most popular spot on campus. Here students relax a bit from their studies. The trees begin to show green, the grass re- quires mowing, and the little flower garden be- hind G. A. Hall exhibits a myriad of colors. It ' s springtime at S. U. Across the campus all the familiar signs inform the student that the season of new life has begun. In a matter of weeks the final exams take place as well as all of the other events that herald the spring. Sunbathing, pic- nics, the long walks around campus, and a swim at Halfway Dam are all part of the spring memo- ries of Susquehanna. SPRINGTIME 1961 The historic meteorite marks the path near the science building. In the distance Selinsgrove Hall is seen as the spring season descends on the campus. Two students leisurely walk along the tree-covered paths that lead across the S. U. campus. • i Z f if Mike Voiles breaks the tape, and Grant Schneider follows closely behind as the two Crusader trackmen gain first and second place for Susquehanna. TRACK 1961 Under the direction of Coach Jim Gar- rett the Susquehanna track team partici- pated in its second intercollegiate season. Although winning only one meet the team performed admirably and fell short of victory on several occasions only be- cause of a lack of depth. The Crusader baseball team chalked up its finest season in recent years as it split a twelve game schedule 6-6. Fine pitching and clutch hitting helped the charges of Coach Robert Bastress record the first .500 or better season since 1941. 157 WM S : Roger Trexler, Len Purcell, Bob Summer, Ron Anthony, Walt Woernle. With Woernle, Snyder, and Summer leading the way the team scored several deci- sive victories and were well respected throughout the state. 4fe 158 Theta Chi Fraternity sings its way to first place in the Inter-Fraternity-Sorority Sing. INTER-FRATERNITY- SORORITY SING With competition at its highest level in recent years the annual S.A.I. Inter-Fraternitv-Sorority Sing proved a huge success. Special guests who introduced the program were the members of the local Barber Shop Quartet of America. All the hard work and practice were soon put on display as each group presented its selections. Theta Chi Fra- ternity carried off first place honors as it successfully defended its cham- pionship. Second place went to Kappa Delta Sorority while Alpha Delta Pi earned the third position. Sigma Alpha Iota, which sponsors the sing annually, entertains the anticipating audience during the judging. The local barber shop quartet renders some catchy tunes at the beginning of the program. 159 1 ;-, p A Hawaiian motif is the setting for one of Phi Mu Delta ' s spring parties It ' s just like looking for a needle in a haystack at Lambda Chi Alpha ' s Hobo party. 160 Children of faculty members gathered to the campus to participate in the AXiD-sponsored Easter E™ Hunt. i i : Peg Thoman, |ane Beers, Linda Wassani, and Jim and Larry Skinner model sports at Theta Chi ' s Spring Fashion Show. 9 T r Phi Mu Delta and Alpha Delta Pi jointly entertain the area ' s retarded children at their annual Easter party. MAY DAY 1961 A tempo of celerity was created at the 1961 May Dav pageant as the magnificence of the four seasons unfolded before its captive audience. In the splendid decor of pastel-colored dresses, the queen and her court viewed the afternoon ' s pageant from their colonial garden of loveliness. The ever-stylish refrains of April Showers, Win- ter Wonderland, and the Good Old Summer Time filled the air as Susquehanna captured the memorable events and associations which inevitably accompany the four seasons vear after year. To highlight the day ' s events, the junior class sponsored the annual May Day dance which featured Maynard McKissick, his ten-piece band, and vocalist Vicki Ransom.
