The excellent Susquehanna Marching Band, under the superb direction of Dr. John Leach, provided the extra touch necessary to create that football atmosphere. The band ' s many hours of practice and drill were evident in the spirited music they played in both the pre-game concert and the half time show. The cheerleaders, too, are deserving of praise; they put forth every effort in leading the parents and students in the cheers which were so necessary to spur the team on to victory. With everything on their side, including the weather, the Crusaders played one of their best games of the season. The results of a month of pre-season training were evident from the opening kick-off. Co-captain Ray Richie caught the ball on the 14 and carried to the 35, and from then on, under the adept signal calling of quarterback Dick Derrick, the Crusaders led the way and the Bears threatened only twice. The lone touchdown was scored as the hard running backs supported bv the fine blocking of the Crusader line brought the ball down to the Ursinus 9 yard line. After Richie picked up 2 yards en the left side Yanuklis bulled his way over right tackle into pay dirt. The remainder of the game was mainly a defensive battle with the ball changing possession many times. The Bears threatened twice in the fourth quarter but the strong defensive wall put up by the Crusader line stopped each of the two drives. The parents and student body were certainly proud of the team for the well-earned victory. After the game the parents enjoyed themselves at the annual Parents ' Day coffee hour in the gymnasium. 71 - Crusader battles opponent for bal Crusaders close in for the ki The Garnet Bows to the Crusaders Susquehanna ' s Crusaders traveled to Philadelphia to play their second game of the season against a tough Swarthmore team led by Nate Price. Approximately one hundred-fifty students traveled to the game to see the Crusaders notch win number two of the young season with a 7-0 victory over the Garnet. The Crusaders in the beginning of the game were unable to cope with Swarthmore s single wing and it looked like an easy win for the Garnet. Twice in the first period the Crusaders had to hold the Garnet at bay within the shadow of our own goal posts. Tremen- dous line play on the part of the Crusader forward wall proved to be Swarthmore ' s downfall. John Yanuklis scored the winning and only touch- down of the afternoon on a four yard smash off of center. With Dick Derrick holding, George Moore kicked the extra point. Bowman gains against Red Devils il Crusader about to drop a Red Devil Susquehanna won their third straight game of the year by overpowering the Dickinson Red Devils 39-14 before an enthusiastic Homecoming crowd. The game, one of Susquehanna ' s highest scoring contests in over half a decade, was played amidst beautiful floats and decorations and was spirited onward by the finest band performance in recent years. The Crusaders, sparked by the running of halfback John Yanuklis and the passing of quarterback Dick Der- Crusatlers Romp Dickinson rick jumped to a 31-0 half time lead. The second half produced a fired-up Red Devil eleven and they pene- trated into Crusader pay-dirt twice within six minutes but the Crusader lead built on two touchdowns by Der- rick and one each by Co-captain Ray Richie and George Moore was just too much for the Red Devils. All alumni at the game were proud of their Alma Mater and espe- cially proud of the team which represented it. 72 Pith l iTWh ■' ' %L S hw v L Derrick drives for extra yardage Bowman makes a first down Wolverines Edge Crusaders 14-12 After winning the first t hree games, the Crusaders left to take on Grove City highly determined to continue their winning streak. Playing a team that outweighed each of our men by twenty-five pounds, the Crusaders literally pushed their opponents all over the field. The entire game was highlighted by penalties thrown at the Crusaders at crucial times. The first touchdown was nullified by a backfield-in-motion penalty and Yan- uklis ' spectacular kickoff-touchdown starting the second half which was also nullified were just two of the exam- ples. Actually, public opinion felt that the Wolverines ' touchdowns were not earned. They could not buck the strong Crusader line as shown by 294 yards on the ground for Susquehanna against 97 yards on the ground for the Wolverines. The Crusaders beat Grove City in every way but the score. It took many days to quell the team ' s disappoint- ment at the loss of this game. Opponent about to tackle Derrick It takes more than one to stop a Crusader California Stymies Crusaders The game against California State Teachers College was definitely the most important game played by the Crusader eleven in many years. The highly favored California team handed the courageous Crusaders a 39-12 defeat. The strong California offense proved too much for the Crusader defense. They drew much of their strength from a two-platoon system which they used against us. Those who witnessed the game know that the Crusaders never lost their determination and fight and it most decidedly paid off because the Crusaders were the only team that the Californians had thus far encountered in their season who could score more than one touchdown against them. Although the Crusaders were definitely outclassed, they played an excellent game against tremendous odds. If anything, it should be said that the Californians knew that they were in a football game. 73 Rebuck sets a Seahawk hack for a loss DiFrancesco makes a tackli Wagner Squeaks by Crusaders 13-6 Another disappointment was in store for the Cru- saders as they lost their third game of the season to the Seahawks at Staten Island. The Crusader defense held the Seahawks down to 24 yards rushing while we gained 174 yards. The key to the game was the fact that we lost seven out of eight fumbles and completed one out of nine passes. Also the Seahawks completed seven of their passes for a total of 92 yards. These passes were all completed at crucial times in the game. The Seahawks got the jump on the Crusaders in the first half with a touchdown which they got by the grace of a very close call. The Crusaders came right back and scored thereby ending the half in a 6-6 deadlock. The ball changed possession during the second half many time and with twenty-three seconds remaining the Seahawks completed a long pass for the winning touch- down. Cheerleaders Hackenberg fights for necessary yardage A Crusader breaks loose Haverford Over Susquehanna 8-7 Trying desperately to attain a winning season, the Crusaders got more than their share of the bad breaks in the last game of the 1958 season as they received their fourth defeat from Haverford College. Susquehanna captured a seven point lead in the first half when Carl Shoemaker fell on a blocked punt in the Fords ' end zone. The Crusaders held their lead until the second half when the Fords started a drive from our 34 and completed it with a touchdown pass. They took advantage of the new extra point rule and scored on a two-point play which gave them the necessary winning score. Although the Crusaders won only three games, the season should be considered successful. Throughout the entire season they showed determination and fight which was exemplified in the fine football played by the lone graduating senior Carl Shoemaker. Left to Hig rf — J. Letson, J.
