The ' 53 pigskin campaign opened a new era for the Crusaders be- cause of the fact that tor the first time in years they played without the ouidance of Amos Alonzo Stagg, Sr. The Crusaders opened the campaign b) ' dropping a 32-14 game to tlie Ursinus Bears. On Parents ' Day it was again S. U. winding up on the short end to Swarthmore, 27-7. Then the Staga-men showed some fight- ing to come within one touchdown of conquering the National Aggies, and Johns Hopkins. However, they fell to the Aggies, 13-7, and to the Blue 94 Javs of Hopkins, 12-6. On Hallowe ' en, the team reeeived their worst defeat ol the season, as their arch-ri ' al funiata sent tliem reeHng back, 39-0. The Homeeomino game with W ' aoner Sea-Hawks was snowed under and canceled. The Crusaders came close to winning their final encounter at which Haverford outlasted them with a 22-1 3 win.
