US I:x Libris LANTHORN Presented by THE JUNIOR CLASS Susquehanna University Selins rove, Pennsylvania CaS. e 1 Every person fits into the drama of life. Many times he must fade back and only follow. But there always comes a time when the opportunity will present itself for him to move to the front to take up the leading role. This time will come when his training and experiences make him a star. A college education puts him in the limelight and college life makes him capable of undertaking the lead. Only ambition is needed for him to maintain this starring role. Step forward! Step out of the background! s ■ ■ 1-7 II 12-13 UL ISSf ■ ■ . H ? S3 ■ ■ Z83 32. WW CAMPUS Li I. Naturally, we look toward graduation with some remorse, and yet, with the preparation we received during our college life, we are eager to take our places in the world. The thought of fulfilling the plans, attaining the desires, and realizing the hopes we each have naturally gives us a feeling of joy. It is our hope that the class of 1952 will go forth with each member attempting to prove himself or herself an honored and respected citizen and a loyal and devoted graduate of Susquehanna. 22 BETTY PEARSON ALBERT 304 E. OFFICERS President - - Reuben Henry Vice President - Robert Shade Secretary - - Eleanor Steffey Treasurer - - Herbert Krauss We, the class of 19 54, have quickly reached the mid-point of our college career. We emerged from our freshman year with a fine spirit of unity, and a profound degree of achievement in athletics, scholarship, and dramatics. Realization of what lies before us in these final two years here at Susquehanna is beginning to take form. May we, with the mutual respect of our fellow students and the administration, continue to maintain the ideals and traditions established by preceding classes that have passed through the portals of this institution of higher learning and binding fellowship. 45 ELZA AUGERS CAROL L. We, the class of 195 5, are the new keystone in the building known as Susquehanna University. The eyes of the professors, alumni, and prospective employers are watching the freshman class, searching hopefully through the group for men and women who can become leaders toward world harmony. Yes, we, the class of ' 5 5, have a challenge to meet. Our class, combined with other freshman classes, is being molded into a mighty keystone to help support and keep strong those ideals which will make the world a place of construction rather than destruction. With a beautiful auditorium, a well equipped stage, select actors and actresses, and a talented di- rector, our theatrical season was highly successful and one which will not be easily forgotten. Weeks ahead, plans were being made in eager anticipation of the Grand Opening. The back- stage crews actively constructed sets, obtained properties, secured costumes, tested lighting, and made the numerous other preparations which go on behind the scenes of any play. Meanwhile, re- hearsals were in progress for the initial production, The Barretts of Wimpole Street, under the able direction of Mr. Kleinsorg. The big day arrived along with misfortune. A replacement for the leading man, who contracted the mumps the day before the opening, had to be prepared to take over the part. But, by evening, everything was in order again, and the roaring ap- Littlc Theatre Entrain Scenes from Barrett!, of Wimpole Street ' plause as the List curtain fell was proof of a mag- nificent performance and a successful launching of the Little Theater. Pretty hostesses in gaily colored gowns, con- trasting against the dark tuxedes of the ushers, served refreshments to the audience. There was a full house every night and large Good Luck bouquets added the final touch to the beauty of the theater. For the annual Shakesperian drama, The Mer- chant of Venice was chosen and for the final pro- duction of the year, Ladies in Retirement was presented. The club motto, Bound as Knights, is self-explanatory of the bond of loyalty between the brothers. The pledge of loyalty, first to Susquehanna and second to Bond and Key, is taken by each member. L Gi-Ni: Funstirmacher Back Buss Carr Tackle Football ' s Grand Old Man, now 89 years of age, celebrated his 62nd year of coaching by assisting his son, A. A. Stagg, Jr. in giving Susquehanna its first undefeated-untied team. The teams of 1932 and 1940 were undefeated, but both had the blemish of a tie on their records. And the honors of Susquehanna ' s squad did not stop with the final play of the last game! Recognition was given to five of the gridmen on Pennsylvania ' s All State team. Jim Hazlett and Rich Young attained first team positions while Eugene Brouse, Buss Carr, and Gene Fen- stermacher were given honorable men- tion. In addition to all this, Hazlett and Young went on to receive Little All American fame with Hazlett being chos- en center on the first eleven. Public recognition was also extended to the ' 51 team in the way of a possible bid to play in the Tangarine Bowl game. Susquehanna 47 — Johns Hopkins 32 University Field S. U. ' s opening tilt proved to be one of the most exciting ever witnessed on University Field. The Blue Jays grabbed two quick T. D. ' s. The Staggmen bounced back via a circus catch by Rising in the end zone. A plunge by Fensty and a pair of markers by Young put S. U. ahead at the half. Lenker, Porter, and Camp- bell were outstanding as they fought to strengthen S. U. ' s somewhat disorganized line. Prichard and Torok completed the Crusaders ' scoring. The Crusaders lost the services of halfback Sam Porter who suffered broken bones in his left foot. Art Stampi el Back Mike Rising End Lou Szabo Guard COMING Susquehanna 37 — Wagner 20 University Field The Crusaders gave a large Homecom- ing crowd a thrilling action-packed af- ternoon as they clinched their second vic- tory of the season. Another unbelievable catch by Rising gave S. U. its first score. The Crusaders showed their fans lots of heads-up football with Young ' s 15-yard field goal and MacNamara ' s 42-yard jaunt when he stole the ball from a surprised Seahawk back. Jim Dell ably proved him- self as he took over Porter ' s defensive duties. Fenstermacher and Prichard made up the rest of the S. U. scoring aggrega- tion. Susquehanna 34 — National Aggies 6 University Field A large Parent ' s Day crowd watched the Staggmen rout the Aggies for S. U. ' s most one-sided win of the season. The Aggies split-T attack consistently ground out yardage but couldn ' t find that scor- ing punch needed when deep in S. U. ' s territory. Nearly all the scoring (except 7 points) was done in the first half with Young (2), Rising (2), and Ross ac- counting for the tallies. The second half was marred by penalties and Hairing tem- pers with the Crusaders ' subs bearing the brunt of the attack. Kay Campbell Back Jim Dell Back Norm Livermore Guard Gene Brouse Guard Dick Herr End Phil Torromeo Back John Takach End Don Walters Back Steve Torok. Sam Ross Back Anthony Dickovicky k Susquehanna 21 — Juniata 12 College Field The Staggmen continued their winning ways by journeying to Huntingdon and scalping the Indians on their own home ground. The first half featured sustained drives by both teams deep into enemy territory, but plagued by fumbles and penalties neither team hit pay dirt. A third quarter Young pass to Herr pro- vided the first score of the game. The final period opened with Torok gathering in a pass to score. Juniata ' s Hepak promptly returned S. U. ' s kickoff 81 yards for a T. D. After an exchange of punts and a drive deep into Indian terri- tory Walter bulled over from the one for the Crusaders ' final tally. Susquehanna 27 — Haverford 7 Walton Field The Crusaders helped Gene Fenster- macher celebrate his birthday by down- ing Haverford for the fifth win of the season. Szabo, Tkaczyk, Livermore, Brouse, and Carr were outstanding in the better-than-usual line play. Fensty cele- brated by scoring two of S. U. ' s four touchdowns. Torok and Young account- ed for the remaining 6 pointers. The Fords scored midway in the second period and then never seriously threatened throughout the remainder of the game. Bob Schwab Tackle Jim Anioia Guard Ken Erdley Back ■■■r M SuSQUKHANNA 19 URS1NUS 14 Patterson Field The Orange and Maroon fans who braved the wind and cold to follow the team to Collegeville were not disappoint- ed. They saw a fighting Crusader eleven climax their 1951 season by topping the Grizzlies and giving Susquehanna its first undefeated-untied team in the school ' s history. A faked kick and a lateral set up Ursinus ' onlv score the first half, while the Crusaders gathered all three of their markers before the midtime. Early in the fourth period Ursinus drove for its last tally. Lenker then intercepted a Grizzly pass and the Staggmen controlled the ball for the remainder of the game. Nine Seniors played Crusader football for the last time. They were Gene Fenster- macher, Buss Carr, Jim Hazlett, Phil Tor- romeo, John Takach, Dick Herr, Bosh Prichard, Ken Lenker, and Sam Porter. Although the team tried hard to bring home the victories, it rather consistently came out on the wrong end of the scores. The players showed good sportsmanship and reflected the spirit and enthusiasm of Coach Pfeifer, who took over in mid- season.
