And the earth was without form, and void . . . And God saw that it was good. In this manner all construction and development are dominated by the universal plan. In the beginning there is an idea and then a plan as it is with the architect when he draws up a set of blueprints. After the plans have been laid, the materials, like the brick and cement, are gathered together. The next step requires the worker to make use of the materials in order to turn out the finished product. If the idea, plan, materials, and work are good, the result must be good. Education follows the same universal pattern. The professors and instructors lay the plans just as the architect draws the blueprint. I lie classes are substituted for the materials ot cement and brick. 1 he extra- curricular work of the students is then divided between athletics , nd or- ganizal ions just as the work of the laborers is divided between the unskilled and skilled. All the ingredients are present . . . And God saw that it was good. ° teots faculty Classes P lhl(Zt CS Activities Orcemiza ' Goos I 1 FacuZtv President of the University President Smith G. It is with some anticipation and sense of prepared- ness that we face our future and realize that our lives will depend solely on ourselves and how we will approach any problems that will undoubt- edly face us. Yet, we are confident. We may take our place in society and contribute freely of our abilities and talents toward any task which we may undertake. It is not, however, without a longing look back at the memories acquired in the tour years of happiness , nd progress attained at our Alni.i Mater. These memories are everlasting. • jn Top row: Bottom row: MARTHA ALBERT 20 S. Getting off to a slow start in the early quarters of the game, the Orange and Maroon got clicking the first time chey took possession of the ball in the third quarter. Rich Young, a new face on the Crusader squad this year, but not new in the football circles. carried from Lycoming ' s 4S to the 33 yard line where Don Walters cracked the middle to the 2S. Young then danced, twirled, shifted and squirmed through the entire Lycoming team to grab the first chunk of pay dirt tor the Crusaders. As time ran out in the third quarter, S. U. was again knocking .11 the 1 ycoming 6 alter good runs ■■I by Young and Ed Menapace. On the first play of the fourth quarter Menapace slashed off tackle to make it 13-0. Ken Lenker playing his usual outstanding game set up another T. D. with his brilliant runbacks on kicks. A Young to Lenker pass put the Crusaders deep in the enemy territory where Young and Menapace stayed on the ground to tally. The fourth score came after Gene Brouse recovered a Lycoming fumble on their 34. Young ' s running and a 15 yard Young to Bill Prichard pass put the ball on the one from where Sam Porter poured through to score. Torok went three for four on his place- ment kicks to make the total score 27-0. Left to Iliiclit— Stngg Mnscinutoni The next game saw the Orange and Maroon travel to Staten Island, N. Y. to take on the Seahawks of Wagner College. With a good send-off and lots of spirit behind them the Crusaders returned victorious. The father and son team of Staggs showed up with another fine display of the defensive art of football and were fast getting off to an unscored upon season. The lone tally came in this hard fought battle in the second quarter when a Young to Menapace pass placed the ball on the Seahawks one. The next play Menapace bulled over for the only score of the game. Hindered by penalties in the sec- ond half both teams failed to impress the crowd except for the defense of the Stagg line which never allowed the Seahawks within their seventeen yard line. Things looked good for the Crusaders, who had lost only Ed Palkovich to injuries sustained in the Lycoming game, until the following Saturday when they traveled away to Baltimore, Md., to take on a new opponent, the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins. The tide was turned as the Staggmen suffered a trouncing of 34-0. Without Coach Al Masciantonio around, the line seemed to crumble on defense and collapsed on the offense. The ba:kfield and then the ends moved up too quickly a few times, only to see the Blue Jay backs skirt the ends and go for paydirt. The most sensational play of the game was a fourth down and five for the Blue Jays inside the Crusader 20, in the second quarter. The man pulled out around end with the ball, only to be trapped by a host of Crusaders. He promptly reversed his field and outran everybody to the goal line. S. U. made only one sustained drive which got stalled by the hard charging Blue Jay line. Buss Carr turned up the first head injury of the season in this game which proved a great disappointment to the squad who were out there to win but couldn ' t penetrate any deeper than the Hopkins 3 5. The team worked hard all week to get ready for Juniata, arch rivals of the Orange and Maroon. Be- fore an enthusiastic Parents ' Day crowd at University Field the Crusaders didn ' t seem to be able to snap out of their losing streak in the first half.. When the half gun went off, the new score board showed the Stagg- men behind 19-6. The Crusaders lone tally in the first half came in closing minutes of the period when Young passed to Lenker and sent it to Gene Fenstemacher, versatile back from Northumberland, Penna. Fenstemacher smashed through the tackle to score. The conversion by Torok went wide and the Cru- saders trudged to the locker room trailing by two touchdowns. As the gun went off to start the second half the Staggmen looked as if they had caught fire again as Young returned the opening kickoff 15 yards to the Crusaders 21. With Young running and passing to Fenstemacher and Lenker, the Crusaders moved to the Indians 27. On the next play Young snapped one to Lenker in the end zone to make it 19-12. After Juniata received, the Crusader forward defensive wall stopped them cold. The Crusader drive bogged down under several penalties and the game turned 55 into a kicking duel between Art Stanfel and the Indians. The game ended with S. U. driving deep into Juniata territory. Time ran out and the Crusaders were left with a .500 average. After a two weeks rest, the Staggmen were ready for a highly favored C. C. N. Y. eleven. The Violets made it clear that they wanted this game but the forward defensive wall of S. U. said NO. Ken Lenker played his usual beautiful game at safety for the Orange and Maroon, and threw his 5 - 7 stature high in the air over and over again to stop the C. C. N. Y. passing attack. Not only did Ken baffle the Violets defensively but offensively too, as he snapped a 1 5 yard chuck from Rich Young to get the first paydirt late in the second period. Steve Torok came through to score the winning point of the game on his conversion as the Crusaders left the field at the half leading 7-0. The Crusaders defense didn ' t falter ' till late in the fourth period. With both teams threatening dangerously from the starting guns of the second half C. C. N. Y. fi nally intercepted a Young pass on the 5 yard line. Running the ball to the ten the Vio ' et went to the air to score. After two unsuc- cessful attempts stopped by Mr. Lenker, finally, Maticas hit Pizzarelli in the end zone. But Lenker raced in to block the conversion and the game ended 7-6. Having only seven games this year the Staggmen took another two weeks rest to sharpen up for Haverford. Haverford was having a good season and were picked to be such favorites that one Philadelphia paper called the Crusaders a Soft Touch. Immediately the campus and the coaches took up the cry and plastered a big sign in varsity lockerroom reading SOFT TOUCH! Nothing was said by the team; this was Homecoming. At the rail) ' the night before the game Captains Bob Pittello, Jess Stone, and Gardiner Marek jusi ;.aid, We want to win! Before the game started. Coach Stagg, Jr. challenged them severally as to whether or not they had the guts to win. The kick finally came with the red and black receiving. They drove quickly to the 5 but the Cru- sader line froze solid and that was the story of the game. The half ended 0-0 but Crusader spirits were high. They had already stopped Haverford three times inside the ten yard line and once on the two foot line they held for two downs. Early in the third period Young went off tackle to culminate ,i 63 yard drive and S. U. was ahead 6-0. The conversion went wide but the Haverford machine was stalled again . nd the Crusaders took over possession of the ball. This time the Fords held and then blocked the kick to set up their T. D. A piss was good to the two then Jim Boyd cracked through to score. Briods conversion was good and Haver- ford led 7-6. The Crusaders received and proceeded to roll up the yardage. A pass from Young to Don Walters who ran nicely was good for 40 yards. On the next play Young handed oil to Walters who galloped to the one yard line where Young cracked over to make it 12-7. That is the way it ended but the real storj was written by Al Masciantonio who was responsible for the fine condition ot the team . nd the stellar line play in which, Jess Stone, Cene Brouse, Bob Pittello and Dick I len were standouts is the tossed the lords for several long losses. The Crusaders defended twice on the two toot line, once on the one toot line and man) ' times inside the ten to beat the fords 12-7. The last game of the season was saved by the father and sin masterminding combination. The op- lui. nuts were the Ursinus Bears. The game was mostly a kicking duel but the ( insiders threatened over and over again and kept the Bears in the hole. I inall) in the second quarter Ursinus was forced to kuk from their own end one. Sophomore guard Gail Moulton roiled in to block the kuk and end less Stone iumped on it for tin T. D. The score remained at 6-0 till late in the fourth period when UrsinUS clicked on p .sses to score. Ken I enker led a host ot C insiders m to block the conversion and the game ended in a 6-6 tie.
