There was the change over to annual pro- motion. This new system made it impossible for the Les Unis to have any activities with the Senior Bee's. This was unfortunate because most of us missed the fun of having two classes competing against one another. Also introduced this semester was the idea of having a senior day each month rather than a senior week. The idea was an excellent one, but it had one drawback: as soon as we finished planning one activity, we had to turn right around and, in less than three weeks, plan and get another activity on the road. In spite of these and other obstacles, whatever the Class of W'70 did, we had a lot offun in everything from the Senior Picnic to Oh, What A Night , the Senior Prom. The Les Unis proved to everyone that we were most definitely The United Ones . . . The Les Unis of W'70. May the Les Unis be UN1TEDforever in spirit, pride, and SO UL! BOTTOM, L-R: Denise Jacson, Kathy Royal, Jackie Wilson, Toni Pitts, Louise Gooden When deciding how to address you, the question which was most prevalent in my mind was what beneficial in- formation through my experiences as Senior Aye Class President could I offer you. Should I tell you that I had a lot of class participation and support and that 90'Z1 of all our activities were successful, or should I tell you about my conhontations with our restrictive and con- servative administration? To me, cliques like these seem commonplace and orthodox, despite the truths embedded in them. Therefore I have decided not to brag on the hippness of my class, nor to steadily down the administration, only to ofer torches of knowledge to lighten your path through the dark hallways of life. Once upon a time, out ofthe purity ofa virgin youth was born. With the inquisitiveness, curiosity, creativity. sincerity and innocence ofa babe, she steadily developed. In time however, youth's aggressive and energetic ideals were loss. She became varnished, regressive, and passive. with the ideals of times passed, blanketed with conser- vative, egotistical, and authoritative attitudes. Because of this, Generation Gap, the second phase of youth be- came known as Age. Like the tortoise, age was slow and cautious and as the hare, youth was swm, sturdy and anxious. Youth looked anticipatingly to each birthday and what new priviledges it held, while age somehow could only view birthdays as stepping SIOHQS to her in- evitable end. Youth, the key to universal happinessg age, the lack that incompasses the world. Let not our minds become as Age, Holdfast to precious ideals ofyouth. This year's board, under the direc- tion of Mr. Fisher, has tried to set goals and ideas for the service clubs. We tried to make them a more active part in planning their own activities and in understanding the role of the administration and student council in school. Archons have planned Service Sportsnite, and a scok hop. Vikings have planned the Service Award Assembly and Clean Campus Week. Squires have taken posts, and have done a good job. Hopefully, the service clubs will work towards the betterment of the student body, and notjust the school. Michael Mori Boy's Service President rg BOY'S PERSONNEL BOARD This semester has been a hard onefor myseU and the board. Though the purpose of the boy's personnel board is orientated to the new B-10 boys and to plan and coordinate all boy's activities, much of the activities were limited, due to the lack oftime. Time was a big factor to us this semester. First, we did not have a sponsor for the board until a couple of weeks aher the school started. Second, we did not have a period to meet and plan our activities. We could not meet during the even- ing, because almost everyone on the board worked. We also could not meet during lunch because it was too short, and also we had to go to dtyferent club meetings. The few activities that were planned came ojf all right. Such as getting cars for homecom- ing. the process of picking the Athlete of the Year, and B-10 orientation. I am sorry that we did not plan more activities this semester. I hope that the next president will have things more easy than me, and also plan much more activities for the boys. DORSEYGRA M STAFF This semester the Dorseygram. under the slightly new but otherwise well-equipped leadership of advisor James Barclay and fledgling editor Tobi Saunders, has undergone a drastic series of changes aimed at increasing production of Dorsey's premier periodical. There are now plans for the Dorsey- gram to come out on a weekly basis. The Dorseygram has also become more controversial, and this has stimulated interest in the paper and provoked comment from the students. Mr. Barclay and Tobi are ably assisted by the members of the editor- ial staff They devote their time to making sure the Dorseygram is every- thing it should be. Of course the backbone ofthe staff is the reporters. These people carry most of the weight of the paper. With- out reporters, the Dorseygram would most certainly be defunct in a matter ofdays. Dorsey by far has one, Mnot the best team in the city, resulting from outstanding participation ofeach and every player and unity as a team. No one player makes the team, although there are great athletes, they team up to make one. However their superior ability does not occur overnight. Through the entire year they have developed their techniques and skills by the time basketball season came around. They were near per- fection. This season Dorsey has gone all the way to the city finals. Despite three injuries, the team managed to stick together and pull through, losing only three games. We all know that every team must have that one iron hand standing behind them. Dorsey's Coach George Hamilton is that man. Coach Hamilton has given to the players a de- termination and drive to march on to victory. Dorsey contains all the ingredients neces- sary for a championship team. This season will not end. The Dorsey Cee Basketball team enjoyed a very successful season by winning 12 and losing 2 games. Under the brilliant directing of Coach Buddy Cha, the Cee's captured first place in the Southern League. Their only loss in the league came hom Fremont by a score of 68-65. However, their con- stant teamwork and high morale proved too much for the Pathfinders the second time around when Dorsey won by a score of 69-65. These service clubs help to make Dorsey operate ejji- cently. Such organizations as GALS and Secretaries have helped the students and teachers at Dorsey. Without their help, many tasks can- not be accomplished. The pictures on this page show the fun which the members of these various clubs had at the Girls' Service Round- up. A jter their dedication to their clubs and to Dorsey, they do deserve one time for fun and amusement. Along with these club members, there were also many teachers present, as you can see. Among these teachers were Mr. Willoughby, Mrs. Doran, Mrs. Moroney, Mr. Tan, Mrs. Harvey, and many other teachers including some of the administrators. It seemed like it was a time to remember. Homecoming, W'70, was a spur of the moment activity taken on by the Dorsey Student Council only two weeks before the event. The traditional sponsor of Homecoming, Girls Personnel Board Know a part of Girls' Involvement Councill, had decided against the Homecoming, knowing that the last home football game would occur early in the season. This would not allow enough time to plan the event. The knowledge that Dorsey would be without a drill team for hamtime activities, also helped the board to make its decision. When Student Council made the discovery, it set out to keep the tradition. It encountered, however, several major problems. Homecoming followed the major Student Council activity, Mardi Gras, by only one week. This kept the Council involved in Mardi Gras, leaving little time to plan the Homecoming. Carsfor the procession of the court were difficult to obtain. Student Council found its members in the girl's gym at 6:00 on the morning of' Homecoming. Here, they blew up one thousand balloons. being used to illustrate the Up, Up, and Away theme. However, all hard work seemed worth it when the ceremonies began. The plans far Homecoming went accordingly, giving both students and alum ni afeeling ofjoy andsatisfaction. May Day became a battleground between the Ad- ministration and Girls' Involvement Council. The traditional event was refused a place on the Master Calendar. by the Administration, for several reasons. One reason was that the Calendar for S70 was filled with activities for May. Dorsey's lack ofa sound system and the poor shape of the Circle was another reason. But the main argument was the belief that May Day was not appreciated by the majority of the Dorsey Donnas. No final decision was made, nor was neces- sary, for the teachers' strike had caused all activities to be cancelled indefinitely. E ,ff k ztzs nol an hurt enough 4 4 ' . God-bless-youth-and-k SHERMAN ,Mt bmw. vw: ' . 3 r 'i F it , ITS ACADEMIC It all started with a letter from KNBC requesting that Dorsey compete on the high school quiz show, It's Academicfs From a number of candidates, three were chosenADavid Tabata, Sherman McAlpin, and Michael Mori. To prepare for the show, Dorsey and L.A. High had a scholar quiz. They slightly slaughtered us. We just hoped that we wouldn't do as badly on television. The day finally arrived, and we caravaned hom Dorsey to Beautiful Downtown Burbank. Mr. Soloff gave us our pep talk, but he was also nervous. We were taken into a room to be briefed about the rules. As we started taping the show, Jerry Fogel, the MC, stopped because everything wasn't ready. We had to do the intro- cuctions again. The schools competing against us were Kennedy and LaReina. After thefirst round, we were ahead by 10. After the second round, we were behind by about 50. Ajer the third round, we were behind by 15. It was a see-saw .struggle through the fourth round between ourselves and Kennedy. We had a chance to win at the end, but we blew the question. It was something like, What is the path ofa stream of water shot straight up in the air, without any Fictional forces? We said, Parabola and the answer was A straight line. Oh Well! We would personally like to thank our cheering section, which made it possible for us to get as close as we did. Our school won a set of science books for the library. 144 TO WHUMITMAYCO CER Today I read an article about the L.A. teachers' strike saying that the teachers won't go back to work until the Board of Education negotiates with them. On that same page, there was another article saying that the Board won't negotiate until the teachers go back to work. It seems that due to the laws of physics, this is somewhat impossible. It disturbs me because if no compromise is made and both sides continue to be hard-headed, this strike may never end. Right now the school authorities are sending substi- tutes intothe school to babysit for the students. The stu- dents dislike for this is reflected in their 50'Za absence AIS' 'ML rate. On the other side, the teachers are outside the schools picketing and persuading the students and parents to join them. The sad thing about this whole thing is that the persons being hurt the most are the students. They are being pushed around, used, and thrown into makeshtf class- rooms while the teachers and the Board of Education fight each other, without an end in sight. This letter isn't being written in favor of the teachers, nor the Board of Education. It is being written in favor ofthe most down-trodden side ofall-the Students. ' I On Thursday, Sept. 18, 1969, Los Angeles Teachers made history by staging a one day walk-out and march to the Board of Education. Sponsored by the combined forces of the Associated Classroom Teachers of Los Angeles KA C T-LA l and the American Federation of Teachers lA F Tj, the approximately 10 thousand teachers demanded smaller class loads, more advanced teaching materials, newer textbooks, special educational programs for individual school needs, as well as higher salaries. fill Eighty per cent of the secondary high schools in the L.A. districts were closed for the day. Mr. Davis offcially cancelled classes at Dorsey at 8:03 A .M . The primary purpose ofthe one day strike was to show the unity of the L.A. teachers in their desire for change. ln the proposals set before the Board of Education, the teachers stipulated that J these essential programs were not initiated within the coming school year, there would be afull-scale strike in the spring. 'ilk , iw X529 sk S . QI , Qs mqsilyce Mm gxxXSZf1 Q NX 'v qs A GAI . Yes again, only this time not just one day, but indefi- nitely. It started on April 13, 1970, and even as this is being written, the teachers ofthe Los Angeles City Schools are still on strike. But now with more force than ever. Members of the United Teachers of Los Angeles KUTLAJ were successful in preventing the schools hom functioning properly. Although only a few schools were technically closed, many were open with less than 50'Z1 ofthe student body attending. The teachers also submitted newer demands. These include smaller classes, better reading programs, com- munity people working in the schools, enough nurses to protect the children, teaching more young people some- thing useful, training for skilled trades -and for college, good teachers who will stay, better counselling services, and an ejective anti-drug program. ll.i,l1 fx, Hifi 1 L L ,Y 'i wil -.gl hw. 40:- L Susan Miller Dorsey High School THE lv STAIRCAS A FULL LENGTH PLAY Thursday, May 7, Studen? Z5 98 ., 5 IN MEMORIUM REGINA OTIS MCCLOUD 1953-1969 K Then said Almitra, Speak to us ofLove. And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said: When love beckons to you, follow him, Though his ways are hard and steep. Ana' when his wings enfoldyou yield to him, Though the sword hidden among his pinions may woundyou. And when he speaks to you believe in him, Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden. For even as love crowns you so shall he crucU'y you. Even as he isfor your growth so is hefor your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth. X Like sheaves ofcorn he gathers you unto himseM He threshes you to make you naked. He sms you tofree youfrom your husks. He grinds you to whiteness. He kneads you until you are pliantg And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast. All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets ofyour heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of LUe's heart. But :fin you fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure, Then it is betterfor you that you cover your nakedness and pass of love's thresh ing-floor, Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all ofyour tears. Love gives naught but itseU and takes naught but from itseM Love possesses not nor would it be possessed: For love is sufficient un to love. When you love you should not say, God is in my heart, but rather, I am in the heart ofGod. And think not you can direct the course of love, or love, gf it finds you worthy, directs your course. Love has no other desire but to fuUill itseM, But U' you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires: To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness. To be wounded by your own understanding of love,' And to bleed willingly and joyfully. To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of living, To rest at the noon hour and meditate love 's ecstasyg To return home at even tide with gratitude, And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips. - The Prophet W...-' -C-4 1 E53-41'if'fj ff Wfmf-em r: S.: .....M.V, , ,, W f, ,fx tx, WM-MWWWVMW - ::: 'i.........-M--0--1' 4- W 'WawMn'MW' LA 2 rf-fm'- M ' ' ..-. ,.,,,....,.....-.--.-----..Q-. .-Q W Mn, , :z:g ....,.....w-W ' 22 --- ---f W,W,,M,.... - ..... ......., M., -XM 11th GRADE CABINET-WINTER '70-Charmaine Jejerson, President, Anthony Hardy, Boys' Vice-President, Debbie Moore, Girls' Vice-President. It might ha ve been the absence ofgroup pictures. Maybe it was the price of 86.00 per copy But think harder. Did you notice the size ofthe annual and the paper quality? Did you notice the individual I athletes' pictures? Did you notice some TRUTH? You wanted a larger annual, so we planned a larger annual. The resu t, a more expensive annual. We felt that sports played a very important role at Dorsey, so we made a bigger sports section. But it was the introduction that we, the editors, concentrated on. We wanted to show the student body the side of Dorsey thatfew ever notice. Look at the pictures and think about the stories they tell. The burned buildings, the broken windows, th , the trash, it's an everyday thing to us. Isn't it? We blame the Administration, but can part of this fault lie within e cops us, the student body? How many ofyou voted during elections? or went to sportsnights? or went tofootball and track meets? How many were actually concerned about Dorsey and the community? Do you, the student body, really care about Dor- sey? Whosefault is it? ' This annual has been a long time coming, just like the incident between the Dorsey student body and the police. The 'riot' made the community aware. Will this annual do the sarnefor you?
